Ponca City Development Authority WEEKLY UPDATE
March 20,  2015

THIS WEEK...you can feel when it's spring break even in industry. It was a fairly quiet week. PCDA took advantage of that to contact 13 new companies and seven site consultants about "opportunities" in Ponca City. That's secret code for things we have that they might need. Mind you these were cold contacts so the odds are not high but the odds of Baylor and Iowa State both losing yesterday in the NCAA Basketball Tournament were not high either so maybe we got that going for us. The 13 is just a coincidence, not an attempt to woe luck to our side which is both pure and just without the need for luck.  We did spend time with Dorada at their job fair this week, helping them with a labor market that is improving for employers, thanks to the price of oil. We also broke bread with two service groups who wanted to talk about the local economy. We did a lot on the marketing side, selling our pureness and justness to a wolrd that needs it, (and this is in addition to the 13 companies and seven site consultants). Today PCDA, or some of PCDA is out of town with a local business looking at ways to boost two different economic needs that, you will be pleased to know, are both pure and just.

MAKING A THERE, THERE...PCDA, along with several community leaders will attend a conference on "Placemaking" next week.  Placemaking is one of those fancy go-to-meetin words coined by "experts" to describe a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces. It capitalizes on a local community's assets, inspiration, and potential, with the intention of creating public spaces that promote people's health, happiness, and well-being.  In other words, its making a central place in your community where people with all kinds of interests can gather and have fun.  It can include basics from seating and restrooms, to food, art, music, shopping, games and activities, among a vast array of other things (pretty much anything, actually).  A place like this also attracts population, if done well.  What PCDA wants to know is this -What are your thoughts about placemaking in Ponca City?  Do we have a place like this, in your opinion?  Do we need one if we don't?  What do you think it would look like or need?  Send your thoughts to lhenderson@goponca.com.

JUST SAYIN...two articles in the oh-so-smart media this week illustrated a growing tension between thems that got it and thems that don't. In "The Street," a respected on-line publication, there was a story about some of the challenges facing a company called "ConocoPhillips" since they sold off their refining business, including their former Ponca City refinery, a few years ago. The other was a story in the Oklahoman where Harold Hamm of Continental Resources was talking about the markets for oil. No one threw anyone under any buses but both stories hinted at growing tension between the upstream side of the oil business and the downstream side. Bluntly, while refineries are hardly cashing in on the glut of oil, it is the producers that are suffering the worst. The press is picking up on this and both stories hint at a tale of two sides of the industry. Mind you Ponca City has an interest in both since we have the big downstream refinery and a lot of businesses that work the upstream side by servicing the wells and selling stuff to those who work the wells. Since both sides need each other, and Ponca City needs both, this is just a friendly pat on the back to the industry from PCDA that better times are ahead, unless you, and the 1.5 billion people in China, plan on walking everywhere.

           CAREER FAIR

Ponca City high school Business Professionals of America club and PoncaWorks will be hosting a career fair at Ponca City high school on Thursday, May 7th.  This fair will provide our high school seniors contact with local industries and demonstrate the types of job opportunities we have in our community. The types of careers our local industries offer cover a wide range that many students may not be aware of- from quality control to industrial safety to machining and more!  Some of these careers require college or technical training, and others only require on-the-job training, so we hope to educate our students on the broad range of career options located in right in their backyard! Stay tuned for updates on the event!
