Regional Athlete Programs

2012 saw the introduction of the FHBC Learn to Train Regional Development Program for boys and girls. The program was a huge success and saw 200 athletes from the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island participate in weekly technical skill training culminating in an 8-aside festival event held in July. 2012 welcomed a new initiative dedicated at improving standards of umpiring in BC. Nominated candidates took part in a program which aimed to improve the knowledge base and on field delivery of umpiring with an emphasis on candidates who would be eligible to take advantage of the international umpiring pathway For more information on FHBC umpires.

A huge thank you to all our coaches and team managers who gave their time on our regional and provincial high performance programs. The success of the high performance programs in 2012 is testament to the continued hard work and commitment of our coaches. Congratulations to our newly qualified coaches. 2012 CIS Championship

UBC Thunderbirds won their 14th McCrae Cup title in November with a 3-0 win over Toronto. UBC has now claimed two straight McCrae Cup titles, three of the last four and a record 14 all-time, three more than Toronto and Victoria.

West Vancouver FHC open new facility

Rutledge Field officially opened on September 10 2011 but played host to its first major event in April 2012 hosting the US Junior National Team for a Canada versus USA Series. Rutledge Field is now the home of West Vancouver Field Hockey Club after many years of hard work on the part of club volunteers, the support of government and community groups, and, a major fundraising campaign. FHBC were pleased to hold the Training to Compete Under 18 Super Series Championship at Rutledge Field in April 2012

Eric Broom wins coveted CAC award

FHBC's Coaching Director, Dr. Eric Broom, was awarded the Geoff Gowan Lifetime Achievement Award in Toronto at the Petro-Canada Sport Leadership Awards Gala, hosted by the Coaching Association of Canada. This award recognizes a lifetime contribution to coaching development as is awarded to a coach who has "presented a positive public image of coaching and enhanced the role of the coach with the Canadian public." Field Hockey Remembers two long time Field Hockey 'pioneers'

In 2012 two Field Hockey's pioneers passed away. Rosemary Penn, who was involved in Field Hockey in Victoria for more th an sixty years, and Florence ("Flossie") Peterson who was instrumental in organizing the first Canadian International teams which travelled overseas in the 1950's and 1960's. National Team Highlights
Both Junior National teams qualified for the 2013 Junior World Cup by winning silver medals at the Pan American Junior Championships. Congratulations to the BC athletes who took part in the Pan American Junior Championships. The senior national men's team finished the year with the Champions Challenge in Quilmes, Argentina, in which they placed 6th. The women's senior team took part in Round 1 of the World Hockey League which they not only won all 5 of their games but all 5 were shutouts, they now qualify for the FIH World League Round 2 in Brazil in 2013. AAA and AA Championships
Another successful AAA championship was held in November 2012, with Handsworth Royals placing first. Congratulations to Handsworth Royals and to all the teams who took part in the tournament.
Congratulations go to Collingwood School who took the 2012 AA High School title in a hard fought final against Shawinigan Lake School at the Burnaby Lake West Complex Nov 9. Field Hockey BC congratulates all involved in what proved to be a very successful and well run event.
