Back by popular demand, Caltech Dining is hosting a series of dinners with entertainment provided by Magic Castle Magicians.  Events will be every Monday in July. Dinner is available from 5:30 to 7PM.  Magicians will be performing throughout the room for the duration of dinner, join at any time.

Caltech Ballroom Dance Club
The CBDC will be offering a new three week series of ballroom classes starting this Sunday, July 13th at 1:30pm. The dances taught will be triple swing and waltz.  Click here for details and registration information.

Paycheck #2
The second paydate for students being paid by SFP is July 25.  Stop by the SFP office to pick up your check.  Students with direct deposit will have their payments deposited on July 25.  Be sure to check our account!

For JPL students receiving actual paychecks,  your checks will be available in the Caltech SFP Office on Friday, July 25 (RDO) and then at the JPL Education Office on Monday, July 28, after 9:00 AM.

Safety Forms
Students working at Caltech, be sure to turn in your safety form to the SFP Office if you have not already done so. 

Progress Report #2 & Abstracts

For most students your abstract and second progress report are due on Friday, August 1.  Please refer to the e-mail message that Carol Casey will be sending out. 

Guidelines for what to include in the second progress report and abstract can be found in the Summer Student Portal.

Housing Payment
PAYMENTS AND FEES FOR VISITING STUDENTS
Your final payment is due:
  • August 7, or the last day of stay 
Payments can be made in person or by phone.  There is also a drop box located near the Housing Office doors on Holliston Avenue.  Please contact the Housing Office for payment details and fees.

SFP T-Shirt Design Challenge
 
The SFP Office is holding a T-Shirt Design Challenge.  Let your artistic side shine!  The selected design will be printed and made available to all of our summer students.  You could be just steps away from fame and glory!

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT: JULY 28 @ 12 NOON

What you need to know:
  • Only SFP Students are eligible.
  • You must incorporate the words "Summer 2014" into the design.
  • Your design is for the back of the shirt.
  • Your design may encompass an area up to 10" x 10"
  • The front of the t-shirt will have the SFP logo.
  • Designs may use 1 - 2 colors, preferably 1.
  • Designs should capture the essence of the summer research experience and/or living and working in Southern California.
  • All designs must be original ideas; no trademarks, designs or phrases.
  • Designs should NOT be specific to any program (i.e. SURF, JPLSIP, etc.) or work location (Caltech, JPL, etc.)
Submit entries as a PDF or JPEG no larger than 5MB.  Email design submissions or questions to the SFP Office. SFP Staff will select the winning design.  T-shirts will be available for purchase for $8.00.  

The selected designer(s) will receive FAME, GLORY, AND 3 FREE SHIRTS!

Library
Visiting students may access the Caltech libraries after hours by swiping their Caltech photo ID at the door.  If your card does not work, just tap on the window and the library sitter will let you in.

Athletics
Summer gym memberships can be purchased by visiting students for $50.  Students must go to the Recreation Office inside the Braun Gym (bldg. 3) to sign up.  The recreation office is open from 8 AM to 5 PM Monday-Friday.

A group of panelists will discuss why they chose industry or academia, the pros and cons of each, and what a day in their life looks like in their chosen fields.

Science Policy Luncheon with Heather Dean - 12 - 1:30 PM
RSVP to receive room location.

Dr. Heather Dean is a current AAAS Fellow in the Directorate for Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences, Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences, and the past President of the Caltech Alumni Association Board of Directors.  Dr. Dean started out as an electrical engineering major at Caltech interested in neural networks.  She was soon exploring the biological side of such networks by studying locust olfaction with Dr. Gilles Laurent, earning her Masters degree in Computation and Neural Systems.  She earned her PhD in Neurobiology at Duke University, where she moved into monkey electrophysiology.  Dr. Deal is also a SURF alum.

This event is co-sponsored by SEPAC and SASS.
