March Discussion Unit Meetings:
Short-Term Vacation Rentals

Beginning with the Tuesday, March 1 meeting at Madame Lu's, you will have a chance to weigh in on an important local controversy (click here for unit dates and locations). You may think that the issue of short-term vacation rentals like Airbnb has been decided, but it could continue to cause problems locally, as as it has across the country.

Many people are enthusiastic about renting out their own homes or apartments and about using short term rentals when they travel. This puts pressure on settled neighborhoods and on the rented apartments needed for workers in the area.

The League has always been concerned about the lack of affordable rentals and this use of residences for tourists has serious impacts. Our local area has an almost zero vacancy rate, and by taking rental apartments for other uses means, we will be even less able to house our working population. In addition, the family owned neighborhoods have found that short term rentals in their midst present new problems of noise and partying that they have not faced previously.

Cities, on the other hand, sometimes see this as another source of tourist and tax revenue, and therefore encourage them. In Washington, D.C. many apartment buildings are constructed just for short term rentals.

At our March Discussion Units we will discuss what experience League members have had with short term rentals, and whether we would support or oppose them.
March 8 Luncheon: Empowered Woman
Co-Sponsored by LWVSB

Earth Day Volunteers Needed

Earth Day is being celebrated April 16 and 17 at Alameda Park. LWVSB will have a booth, but because of a lack of volunteers we are only able to staff the booth on Saturday, April 16. We also need a Chairperson.

We will have tables, chairs and a canopy. We will also have printed materials and one or two petitions to sign. If you are interested in helping please call the office and leave a message 965-2245, or send an email.
Help with Election Forums

June 7 is the California Primary. And that means lots of work for the League.

There will be Supervisors races in District 1 and 3 and a Congressional race in the 24th District. Voter Service is already working on organizing several Candidate Forums. We will need members to serve as timekeepers, greeters, compilers and general monitors. There will be many jobs for both the Primary and November elections. Please volunteer by contacting Susan Shank
March Community Forum
Goleta Development: What is There Now
And What Will the Future Bring?
Wednesday, March 16, Louise Lowry Davis Center

The League is concerned about the new development occurring in the Goleta Area and about what the impacts will be. For this Forum we have invited former Mayor and Councilmember
Margaret Connell to talk to us about how many of these developments were included in Goleta's original General Plan.

We will hear from the Westside Goleta Coalition about a remarkable success they have had working with Sacramento to site a new California Highway Patrol station. Their experience proves that concentrated community action can solve problems. We will also hear from the Goodland Coalition about new concerns they have.

In order to take future action, the League wants to consider what the impacts of new development will be on water supplies and on traffic congestion. Join us for a lively discussion!
