LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS
OF SANTA BARBARA
Celebrate Women's Equality Day
at Great American Write-In Aug. 26
The 12th annual Great American Write-In, celebrating women's equality day, will be held Wednesday, Aug. 26, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Faulkner Gallery of the Santa Barbara Central Library. LWVSB is a member of the Pro-Choice Coalition, which sponsors the event.

Join members of more than 20 local organizations for a fun and energizing event. You will have the opportunity to discuss critical issues impacting women's health care and sign letters to elected officials-including one from the League-supporting legislation that protects reproductive and women's rights.

This evening of activism celebrates 95 years of women's right to vote. The event is free and open to the public. Celebration cake and refreshments will be provided. You can also enter to win two tickets to Planned Parenthood Action Fund's annual Politics, Sex and Cocktails. Bring return mailing address stickers or stamps for faster letter signing!
Happy Birthday Medicare
On July 30 countrywide celebrations honored the 50th anniversary of Medicare. In Santa Barbara, local Health Care for All (HCA-SB) and LWVSB co-sponsored an event graciously hosted by the the Valle Verde Retirement Community in their theater with over 65 community guests. Featured was a history lesson on health care insurance from 1790 to the present by Peter Conn. The festivities featured abundant Carpinteria flowers from the Van Wingerden nursery via Dorothy Campbell, piano and birthday music of John Douglas, and chocolate and vanilla birthday cakes.
Wednesday, Sept.16 Community Forum: Getting There--and Back! How Do We Get Around--Or Not? (In the City and County of Santa Barbara )
With traffic only getting worse and maintenance backlogs growing, what are the City of Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara County doing to meet the challenges?  Can we have safe and beautiful streets for all users-walkers, drivers, riders of bikes, buses and rail?

The city and county transportation experts are coming to our forum to show us the why and how of what engaged citizens, city and county leaders and public works staff are doing--our recent past, our current progress and what is ahead.

Transportation planners and traffic engineer speakers will include Mike Becker of the regional SBCAG, and SB City's Derrick Bailey, Jennifer Grant, and Peter Brown. The moderator will be Susan Horne, Health Educator, member of the SB City Transportation and Circulation Committee and of COAST.

LWVSB Office Closes--Temporarily
Our office at 328 A E. Carrillo is now closed for two-three weeks. Everything was packed into a POD at the back of the property or taken home by committee chairs for their continuing work. Joanie took home our office computer so it would be available if we need it. Thank you all for your flexibility as we create a new and wonderful space.

The contractor has gutted our office to get it ready for a new travertine-style tile and coordinated paint.  Thank you to Lindsey Baker, Bonnie Lassen and Joanie Jones for their work on this project. Stay tuned for more updates--Amanda Pelch
No Unit Meetings in September
Watch for the schedule in these email messages, the calendar of your September-October Channel Voter and on our website.
Time to Renew--or Join the League
August is a busy time for a Membership Director. Letters for dues renewals went out in July to current members, as well as letters to former members. Enclosed with the reminders were the Opportunity is Knocking brochure and the 2015-2016 Annual Member Survey. If you have not returned your survey, please do it today. It helps your board and committees determine how much we can accomplish in the coming year.

Our bylaws decree that once a member's dues are 60 days late, that person is no longer a member. Please pay your dues now if you haven't already done it.
You can use PayPal to renew or join.
Our Channel Voter is now being mailed only to members without email addresses. There is no newsletter during the summer. But you will continue receiving League information via these emails, the occasional letter and on the website. You can also view the latest Channel Voter online.

We hope to see you soon.

Sincerely,

Amanda Pelch and Lindsey Baker
