From the ACNA Catechism
| 59. Why does the Creed say that Jesus suffered under the Roman governor Pontius Pilate? The Creed thus makes clear that Jesus' life and death were real events that occurred at a particular time and place in Judea in the first century A.D. (Matthew 27:22-26)
Access the Catechism on the ACNA page here. Here are the Scripture references:
Matthew 27:22-26 (ESV) 22 Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" They all said, "Let him be crucified!" 23 And he said, "Why, what evil has he done?" But they shouted all the more, "Let him be crucified!" 24 So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this man's blood; see to it yourselves." 25 And all the people answered, "His blood be on us and on our children!" 26 Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

Thursday Morning Men's Study Handout
|
When you look at a video of the "Early Christians" Thursday morning Bible study, you might notice folks looking at a handout. Here is the one from August 27, 2015.
Early Christians Romans: The Righteousness of God revealed in the Gospel of God Fr. Andrew Rowell August 27, 2015
[1] Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. [2]Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. [3] Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, [4] and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, [5] and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. (Romans 5:1-5 ESV) Questions for Discussion
1. Outline for yourself the content of Romans 1-4, just so you're sure where we're going from here. 2. How would you describe shalom, that all-encompassing peace with God that the gospel promises to give us? o What evidence is there in your life of shalom? o If we are at peace with God, how do you think we are to live in the world? What should be the products of that peace that came at such a high cost to God? 3. How would you describe the Christian life as "standing in grace" and "rejoicing in hope of the glory of God?" o How does suffering impact your definition? o How do you respond to the "prosperity gospel?" * Do you think that Christians should not suffer during this earthy life? * Do you believe that being a Christian is a means by which we will necessarily receive tangible earthly blessings? o Does the presence of human suffering make you doubt your hope? Does it challenge your faith? 4. How does the Christian life rest on "hope against hope?" 5. When you think of the glory of God (access into His Temple, into His royal courts), what images spring to mind?

Prayer For Christchurch
Give us Your strength for the journey, Lord, for we've begun the race but are far from the finish. You Who have brought us to this new day, lead us onward, for we want to follow.
Give us the faith to fight the good fight, for with You we know we cannot lose. Give us the peace that knows we're not alone, for Your Son walks with us.
Give us the grace to see each step taken as part of a greater Plan, for it's Your will that we seek.
And as we keep the faith to the end of our journey, may we always remember why we began.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

+CHRISTCHURCH+
Its unceasing mission: To be a light in the world, a city set on a hill; To keep the faith delivered once for all to the saints; To offer new life and ancient truth.
To be a place where:
Saints are made and fishing taught;
love's displayed as souls are caught;
hearts are mended and faith upbuilt;
all befriended, freed from guilt;
holy fires by Spirit lit and bright hopes raised by Holy Writ;
Jesus praised as bread is broken,
to share His cup, that grace be spoken;
lives lifted up:
the blind find sight,
the lost brought near,
In God's delight Christ is here!
"Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus forever. Amen."
Ephesians 3:20-21
