Thursday Men's Bible Study

Since Christchurch was founded in 2005, the Men's Thursday Bible Study Group, also known as the Men's Prayer Breakfast, has been meeting in the Goode Building. The Rev. John-Michael van Dyke has been our primary teacher. We have had a number of serious and fun talks, including several sports-related. Who could forget the 2006 series called "Sermons On the Mound"? April 9th was JM's last Thursday as our regular teacher. Bob Hill took a group photo for us to share.
Palm Sunday Prayer
PRAYER for Andrew+ and Mimi Rowell
Palm Sunday - 29 March 2015

O God, I ask your blessing upon this man and this woman, this priest and his wife - and their new congregation, the people of Christchurch. I pray that You will bestow upon Mimi and Andrew+ the great happiness and deep joy that comes in having a family, and the delight in discovering a larger family here that longs to take them in, and will bless them more than they know in years to come. I ask your blessing upon their child, that this precious soul may discover what it means to be loved and nurtured and cherished by God's people.

But I pray especially, Lord, for Andrew+, that in his time of service in this corner of Your vineyard, with this flock that belongs to You, that in Your gracious love Andrew+ will find given to him these gifts:

* The gift of knowing always his great task and charge: to love Your people here as You love them, and to help them know that as long as they look for You, they will always see You in each other;
* The gift of knowing that only with Your help can he ever do his best, and that all he need do is ask for it;
* The gift of remembering Your approval is the only one that counts, and that no matter what the world says, that's all he ever needs;
* The gift of having his faith strengthened daily, so that he's never uninspired with little steps, nor frightened by the giant ones, because he can always leave the results in Your hands;
* The gift of always being welcomed to trust that You are near, even in times when he doesn't feel it, that he may take failure not as a measure of his success, but as a lesson to be learned and a chance for a new beginning;
* The gift of finding that Your work on earth when cheerfully done is usually well done, and that real achievement never lies in what we begin, but in what You finish;

And finally, Lord, I pray that one day, at the end of his good work and tenure here, Andrew+ will be able to say, with all of his heart, "Thank You, Lord," and mean it; for if he can say that - as I can say it now - it will have been enough, and all shall be well. In Jesus' Name, we pray. AMEN.

J.M. van Dyke+

From the ACNA Catechism
38. Who is God?
God is one divine Being eternally existing in three divine Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is the Holy Trinity. (Matthew 3:16-17; 28:19)
39. According to Holy Scripture, what is the nature and character of God?
"God is love" (1 John 4:16). Sharing an eternal communion of love between the three Persons, God loves and mercifully redeems fallen creation. "God is holy" (Psalm 99; Isaiah 6:1-4). God is utterly transcendent, good, righteous, and opposed to all sin and evil. God's love is holy, God's holiness is loving, and the Lord Jesus Christ is the fullest expression of God's whole character. (Hebrews 1:3; John 1:18; 17:21; Colossians 1:19)

Access the Catechism on the ACNA page here.

Here are the Scripture references:

1 John 4:16 (ESV)
16  So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

Psalm 99:1-9 (ESV)
1  The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!
2  The LORD is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples.
3  Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he!
4  The King in his might loves justice. You have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.
5  Exalt the LORD our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he!
6  Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel also was among those who called upon his name. They called to the LORD, and he answered them.
7  In the pillar of the cloud he spoke to them; they kept his testimonies and the statute that he gave them.
8  O LORD our God, you answered them; you were a forgiving God to them, but an avenger of their wrongdoings.
9  Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the LORD our God is holy!

Isaiah 6:1-4 (ESV)
1  In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple.
2  Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
3  And one called to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!"
4  And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.

Hebrews 1:3 (ESV)
3  He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

John 1:18 (ESV)
18  No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.

John 17:21 (ESV)
21  that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

Colossians 1:19 (ESV)
19  For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,

Prayer For Christchurch

Give us Your strength for the journey, Lord, for we've begun the race but are far from the finish. You Who have brought us to this new day, lead us onward, for we want to follow.

Give us the faith to fight the good fight, for with You we know we cannot lose.

Give us the peace that knows we're not alone, for Your Son walks with us.

Give us the grace to see each step taken as part of a greater Plan, for it's Your will that we seek.

And as we keep the faith to the end of our journey, may we always remember why we began.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

+CHRISTCHURCH+
Its unceasing mission:
To be a light in the world, a city set on a hill;
To keep the faith delivered once for all to the saints;
To offer new life and ancient truth.

To be a place where:

Saints are made
and fishing taught;

love's displayed
as souls are caught;

hearts are mended
and faith upbuilt;

all befriended,
freed from guilt;

holy fires by Spirit lit
and
bright hopes raised
by Holy Writ;

Jesus praised
as bread is broken,

to share His cup,
that grace be spoken;

lives lifted up:
the blind find sight,
the lost brought near,
In God's delight Christ is here!

"Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine:
Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus forever. Amen."

Ephesians 3:20-21
