Safety Aspects of Sites"

The Environmentally Friendly Drilling (EFD) program conducts a number of research projects on air, water quality, land, and efficiencies. In addition, the field tests performed have enabled the program to document "unintended benefits," including improvements in public perception. Read more here.

FREE Webinar: CHP in the Oilfield
May 24, 2016, 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm CST

The application of combined heat and power (CHP) for industrial applications is proving to be a great opportunity to reduce energy costs, add efficiency and improve the resilience of oilfield operations. There is considerable opportunity for the deployment of CHP for oil field sites. The Department of Energy's Southwest CHP Technical Assistance Partnerships will be leading a webinar on the opportunities and applications of CHP in the oil field. The CHP TAP can serve as a great resource for facilities considering implementing CHP systems and can help conduct no cost site screenings/analysis. Please join us on May 24th at 2 pm Central Time/3 pm Eastern Time to learn about these CHP benefits and opportunities for your site.

Five years ago, the Ground Water Protection Council and Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission partnered with a vision to provide the public a one-stop site to access information on chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing operations by location. The partners launched FracFocus.org, the national hydraulic fracturing chemical disclosure registry on April 11, 2011.

FracFocus is managed by the Ground Water Protection Council and Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, two organizations whose missions both revolve around conservation and environmental protection.

2015 Best Environmental Stewardship Winner: Shell Oil Company
From their site: "In 2011, a Shell Oil Company employee saw a presentation about an innovative technology for water habitat restoration; however, it had never before been applied in open water. Inspired by the need to address coastal erosion in Louisiana, Shell and the Coastal Conservation Association proposed a demonstration project to use the innovative "floating islands" technology to help restore the coastal wetlands on Isle de Jean Charles. The floating islands are created using a matrix of plastic (made from recycled PET bottles) and planted with appropriate vegetation whose roots extend into the water. The system reduces wave energy, lessening erosion potential. The project was managed by Shell employees and brought together local businesses, other oil and gas companies, local government, and community schools. Not only has this project had a positive impact on more than 1,000 people and indigenous inhabitants, but also the floating islands advance the science of habitat restoration and marine fisheries conservation in the United States."

2015 Best Commitment to Education Winner: GE Foundation

From their site: "GE Foundation's Developing Futures™ in Education Program supports quality K-12 public education in the United States. Focusing on school systems in need of reform, the GE Foundation's Developing Futures™ program seeks to transfer proven GE business philosophy to American teaching and learning practices. Its goal is to ensure that Americans graduate from high school, college-  and career- ready, with a special emphasis on developing STEM capabilities. Since its launch in 2005, Developing Futures™ has invested more than $225 million and thousands of hours to support student achievement and professional development for teachers in K-12 public schools across the country.  The program has reached more than 10,000 educators, 1,450 business leaders, and 1.3 million students spanning more than 2,000 K-12 public schools."

The EFD program, funded by federal, state and foreign government agencies, industry and environmental organizations, provides unbiased science to policy makers and identifies, develops and tests new technologies, processes and systems to reduce the environmental footprint associated with oil and gas activities, from well site selection through natural gas compression. The program, approximately $4 million per year, is engaged in research and technology transfer activities from the Western Slope of the Rockies to the Ukraine, and from the North Slope of Alaska to Columbia (South America). Research includes land, air and water issues, as well as public perception investigations. The program was honored with the Chairman's Stewards Award for Environmental Partnership at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission.
