named winner in
2014 TEEA Pollution Prevention Category!

The Texas Environmental Excellence Awards, a program of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, recognizes and celebrates outstanding waste reduction and pollution prevention projects.

In addition to nearly 700 gas wells, Pioneer Natural Resources operates 800 miles of pipeline in the Texas Panhandle. Every day, spherical balls called "pigs" keep those lines clean. As the pig moves, it catches condensate, sediment, and rust. But every time a pressurized gas line is opened, there's also a small loss of product. In 2006, Pioneer devised a process to drop line pressure before it's opened. Pioneer also built larger launching and receiving barrels which enables workers to insert 14 pigs at once. This means hatches only need to be opened a couple of times a week instead of a couple of times a day. That cut emissions by 90%. The company invested more than 4 million dollars in the new process and already has taken what it learned here to its other operations.

Cutting Edge Technologies in Innovative Mining

The mining, gas and oil industry faces the common challenge of staying profitable while maintaining strict environmental regulations. In response, this year's Climate Symposium welcomes companies from the mining, gas, and oil industry as well as academic professionals. During this half-day symposium, German and U.S. industry experts will share their findings in research and innovation related to new technologies in the mining industry.

Characterizing Nitrogen Emissions
University of Pittsburgh

Dr. Emily Elliott at the University of Pittsburgh is working on how to characterize nitrogen emissions. Measurements use a combination of passive and real-time sampling of NH3, NOx and ozone (O3). This work aims to fill a critical knowledge gap in assessing how activities associated with individual wells may potentially affect air quality and ecosystem improvements realized under the Clean Air Act and Amendments. The EFD Team is coordinating with operators to locate additional sites to test the process that Emily is developing.

Quest to Reduce the Environmental Footprint

Environment 24/7

The EFD program, funded by federal, state and foreign government agencies, industry and environmental organizations, provides unbiased science to policy makers and identifies, develops and tests new technologies, processes and systems to reduce the environmental footprint associated with oil and gas activities, from well site selection through natural gas compression. The program, approximately $4 million per year, is engaged in research and technology transfer activities from the Western Slope of the Rockies to the Ukraine, and from the North Slope of Alaska to Columbia (South America). Research includes land, air and water issues, as well as public perception investigations. The program was honored with the Chairman's Stewards Award for Environmental Partnership at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission.
