 Characterizing Nitrogen Emissions
University of Pittsburgh
Dr. Emily Elliott at the University of Pittsburgh is working on how to characterize nitrogen emissions. Measurements use a combination of passive and real-time sampling of NH3, NOx and ozone (O3). This work aims to fill a critical knowledge gap in assessing how activities associated with individual wells may potentially affect air quality and ecosystem improvements realized under the Clean Air Act and Amendments. The EFD Team is coordinating with operators to locate additional sites to test the process that Emily is developing.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has updated guidance on Planned Maintenance, Startup, and Shutdown (MSS) at Oil and Gas Handling and Production Facilities.
As of January 5, 2014, all planned emissions from oil and gas facilities must be authorized. This includes planned MSS emissions.
What are planned MSS Emissions? Planned MSS emissions include air emissions resulting from the maintenance, startup, or shutdown of equipment or facilities at a site. Planned MSS emissions include emissions that are predictable as to timing; involve the type of emissions normally authorized by a permit; and are part of normal or routine facility operations. Examples of planned MSS emissions may include activities such as routine maintenance and other activities such as equipment blowdowns, pipeline pigging, or tank de-gassing. Planned MSS emissions do not include unplanned MSS, upsets, or emission events. The TCEQ does not have the authority to authorize unplanned MSS, upsets, or emission events.

ALCOA Oil & Gas, Inc.
Presented at the September IADC-DEC Technology Forum
Jeff Lehner of Alcoa recently presented at the IADC-DEC Technology Forum in Houston, Texas. The topic covered the reduced torque, improved WOG transfer, and increased ROP found in field results and simulations utilizing mixed ADP-SDP string in complex horizontal wells. The presentation is available through the IADC site.
A case study authored by Stephanie Menand was published entitled, "SPE 170255 Successful Use of Mixed Aluminum-Steel Drill Pipe String in Complex Horizontal Wells" for more information.

The EFD program, funded by federal, state and foreign government agencies, industry and environmental organizations, provides unbiased science to policy makers and identifies, develops and tests new technologies, processes and systems to reduce the environmental footprint associated with oil and gas activities, from well site selection through natural gas compression. The program, approximately $4 million per year, is engaged in research and technology transfer activities from the Western Slope of the Rockies to the Ukraine, and from the North Slope of Alaska to Columbia (South America). Research includes land, air and water issues, as well as public perception investigations. The program was honored with the Chairman's Stewards Award for Environmental Partnership at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission.
