ASME Podcast:
Developing Environmental Standards
for Hydraulic Fracturing

Rich Haut was interviewed for the ASME Podcast in February to discuss the EFD Program and its work to identify and measure various environmental concerns as well as to certify solutions to air and water issues associated with oil and gas development.

The University of Texas
at Austin

Established in 1909, the Bureau of Economic Geology in the Jackson School of Geosciences is the oldest and second-largest organized research unit at The University of Texas at Austin. In addition to functioning as the State Geological Survey of Texas, the Bureau conducts research focusing on the intersection of energy, the environment, and the economy, where significant advances are being made tackling tough problems globally. The Bureau partners with federal, state, and local agencies, academic institutions, industry, nonprofit organizations, and foundations to conduct high-quality research and disseminate the results to the scientific and engineering communities as well as to the general public.

Bureau researchers spearhead basic and applied research projects around the world; among them, research in energy resources and economics, coastal and environmental studies, land and water resources and use, geologic and mineral mapping, hydrogeology, geochemistry, and subsurface nanotechnology.   The Bureau provides technical, educational, advisory, and publicly accessible information via a myriad of media forms to Texas, the nation, and the world.

Energy Developments
and the Transportation System

The Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) is conducting work to identify areas where the energy sector and the transportation sector interact with the main goal of identifying and helping to implement solutions that benefit all related stakeholders in the state.  This work is multidimensional and covers areas such as, but not limited to, transportation system maintenance and operations; funding needs and requirements; multimodal facility considerations (e.g., roads, ports, and railroads); supply chains; equipment and material routing optimization; truck fleet and equipment deterioration; and traffic safety.  To address this urgent need, TTI is looking for information from energy sector stakeholders, with a specific focus on the Eagle Ford Shale region (although information about trends and activities in other parts of the state would be beneficial if available).

Unconventional Oil & Gas Report -
Special Report from the Oil & Gas Journal

Tom Williams from the EFD Team provided an interview in the Transition Drivers section of the article, 'Cabot fuels Marcellus operations with gas.' The topic is using natural gas to power operations and how this practice is growing across the United States.

The EFD program, funded by federal, state and foreign government agencies, industry and environmental organizations, provides unbiased science to policy makers and identifies, develops and tests new technologies, processes and systems to reduce the environmental footprint associated with oil and gas activities, from well site selection through natural gas compression. The program, approximately $4 million per year, is engaged in research and technology transfer activities from the Western Slope of the Rockies to the Ukraine, and from the North Slope of Alaska to Columbia (South America). Research includes land, air and water issues, as well as public perception investigations. The program was honored with the Chairman's Stewards Award for Environmental Partnership at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission.
