In December, EPA announced the first in a series of technical workshops to discuss Analytical Chemical Methods related to EPA's study of potential impacts of hydraulic fracturing on drinking water resources.
EPA is seeking subject-matter experts to contribute to the workshop.
Several experts will be invited to present research technical information, and others will contribute to technical discussions throughout the one-day workshop. This first workshop is scheduled for Monday, February 25, 2013 in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. |
Supporting Research Effort Proposal A Study to Identify & Measure the Environmental Impact of Onshore Drilling
A project has been proposed to conduct a study that will determine how resource development can occur without negatively impacting the environment. It would address current practices that impact the environment and the practices that have been developed in order to protect the environment, as well as aid in determining what we can do better.
This study will include information about changes in regulations and practices/perceptions related to environmental concerns that will affect drilling in different areas. Read more here...

Environmentally Friendly Drilling
Scorecard Prototype Tested
Two members of the EFD Scorecard team traveled to an operator's location in an upland woodlands ecosystem to test the scorecard with assistance from the operator's regional business offices. The operator, one of the sponsors of the EFD program, graciously offered this specific locale to work with the Scorecard Team in this effort. The team then traveled to the selected rig site to discuss the scorecard and other items with the rig crew.

Energy Policy:Building on Abundance
Learning from the past, ensuring a bountiful future
Over the past few years, new oil and natural gas discoveries have been made in places like Ohio, Pennsylvania, and North Dakota. In just a few years, North Dakota has become the second-largest oil-producing state in the United States, behind only Texas. Pennsylvania is becoming a leading natural gas-producing state.
With new energy opportunities such as these, what does this mean for U.S. energy policy?

The EFD program, funded by federal, state and foreign government agencies, industry and environmental organizations, provides unbiased science to policy makers and identifies, develops and tests new technologies, processes and systems to reduce the environmental footprint associated with oil and gas activities, from well site selection through natural gas compression. The program, approximately $4 million per year, is engaged in research and technology transfer activities from the Western Slope of the Rockies to the Ukraine, and from the North Slope of Alaska to Columbia (South America). Research includes land, air and water issues, as well as public perception investigations. The program was honored with the Chairman's Stewards Award for Environmental Partnership at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission.
