A Year of Success
January 2013
Greetings!

2013 has started with an inspiring and innovative speaker in Kanika Gupta. Kanika was our keynote speaker for the 3rd Innovation Lunch Series event. Held at the Hazel McCallion campus, in partnership with Sheridan College and the Peel RIC Centre, Kanika's presentation was focused on opting for courage not fear when going after your dreams. What entrepreneur hasn't felt those moments of trepidation ? HalTech is here to help you through those moments and provide you the support to courageously go after your dream.

How can we help you be successful in 2013 ?

About Mitacs: Through unique research and training programs, Mitacs is developing the next generation of innovators with vital scientific and business skills. In partnership with companies, government and academia, Mitacs is supporting a new economy using Canada's most valuable resource - its people.

From the President

Jan 2013 Innovating forward, or perhaps backward.

As 2013 presents itself, we at HalTech are envisioning how we can best service our clients and maximize the economic impact of technology-based companies on the Halton Region.  We are looking for new ways to approach our service offerings.

I like to think we are like innovator athlete Richard Fosbury who developed the Fosbury flop - over time and in small increments he developed a different way to approach the high jump.  Until Richard came up with the Flop, no-one had contemplated approaching the high jump backwards, instead, preferring the more classical scissor or straddle approach.  By approaching his business, in this case jumping over a high bar, in a very different way he was able to achieve much better results and change the way the sport was executed.

HalTech is looking at how we can take different approaches to what has worked here and elsewhere - and adapt it so that it yields better results.  We are, in effect, raising our own bar to take our clients to new levels of success.  We will be rolling out our client programs over the winter and spring.  Watch our web-site for more information.

Looking forward to your feedback as we innovate and adapt.

Cheers,

Karen Sievewright

SoJo Marries Tech With Doing Good

When Kanika Gupta first hit the streets to tell the world about her idea to advance social innovation, she often found herself face-to-face with a firmly closed door.

But at HalTech, she and her idea were welcomed, accepted, and even understood.

That idea was SoJo, short for Social Journal and found at thesojo.net. It's an online resource centre and community for do-good entrepreneurs that sits comfortably at the intersection of technology, social change, and online education.

"At HalTech, there was no hesitation," Gupta says. "Karen and the others took the time to understand what we were trying to do and quickly saw our potential to build value and serve an underdeveloped market. I never had any doubt that HalTech would recommend activities that were in line with our core values."

Like all start-ups, SoJo needs funding, so the HalTech team has been helping them apply for government grants. Gupta also met with HalTech advisers, who showed her how to reframe her approach and articulate SoJo's purpose in the most effective way.

"HalTech delivers," she says. "They have been a pleasure to work with, and I say that with integrity. Karen has a positive attitude, focuses on solutions, and is very generous providing access to her networks."

Invested in clients' success

When the folks at HalTech come across opportunities that can advance SoJo, they send Gupta notes about funding she should apply for or events she should attend.

"They have me in the back of their minds all the time and I'd imagine it's the same for their other clients. They invest in our success and can take pride in their part in it."

Gupta has two pieces of advice for entrepreneurs who are beginning to work with HalTech or a similar centre.

"First, understand completely your vision, your values, and why you're doing what you're doing. They can't tell you that. And be open to listening. No, the advisers are not in the trenches with you, but they have valuable perspective and good suggestions about how to get where you want to go."

For more information about the journey of SoJo, visit Gupta's blog at www.socialjournal.net.
