What Were We Talking About?........................

The final two Speaker Meetings of 2014 were held this month. Our good friend and major medical contributor to our website, Dr Richard Libman conducted his popular "Q&A Stroke Forum" at our Hicksville Community Center venue. A similar format was adopted by Dr Harry Schneider, a language specialist and research scientist. Speaking at Plainview, Dr Schneider shared the practical outcome of his research for the benefit of our aphasic members. He shared promising hope for effective restoration of speech function and comprehension through the use of transcranial direct current stimulation and novel language therapy.

Robots Too!.................
Suddenly, we all know the name of Dr Bruce Volpe and Johanna Chang from the Feinstein Institute, Manhasset, not because they're robots (they're not!). Several members are extolling their virtues thanks to the benefits they have received from their robotics trial. If you too have weakness in an upper limb and wish to join the trial, please contact Johanna Chang. Tel: (516) 562-3646. Email: jchang14@nshs.edu
Dr Volpe created interest in robotic therapy at a Speaker Meeting this year and will give us an update early in the New Year.

Survivor Spotlight..................
 Name: Dan Malaszczyk
Age: 69 Lives In: Wantagh, NY
Date of stroke: September 17th 2010
Type of stroke: Ischemic Initial Deficits: Dizziness, Right-sided weakness, aphasia
"Captain Dan"
Dan had an ischemic stroke in September 2010. His day started off in a rather ordinary way but little would he know that day would change his entire life and make him understand how precious and fragile life really is. 'The event', as he likes to call it, seemed to come out of nowhere. One minute, he and his wife Maryann were planning a day of crabbing at Captree State Park and the next minute he felt disoriented - almost in a trance. He experienced all the classic signs of a stroke
- Severe dizziness and the inability to stand
- Numbness and loss of feeling on the right side of my body
- Unable to speak. Ironically he was able to visualize what he wanted to say but just could not form the words.
For the first time in his life, he thought he was going to die, right there in his own living room.
