RoadRUNNER's Motorcycle of the Year: The Indian Chieftain During this past year, we tested a wide range of motorcycles. Our editors have run around on a 700cc scooter, cruised on an Italian V-twin, traversed states on a liquid-cooled adventure bike, and crossed the country on a three-wheeled machine. All of the motorcycles seem to be leaders in their category, and some even excel far beyond what we call fun and adventure. But to win our MOTY award, we look for a game changer-this year it was a clear choice.
We're pleased to announce that the Indian Chieftain has been voted Motorcycle of the Year by the RoadRUNNER team.
The entire industry has been waiting since April 2011 (when Polaris bought Indian Motorcycles) for the reincarnation of America's first major motorcycle brand. Arguably the most fabled brand on our continent, it has seen its share of mismanagement and bad luck since its inception in 1901. With the backing of a $3.5 billion company, consumers can, and should, be excited about what's to come. Three models were introduced during the Sturgis Rally: the Chief Classic, the Chief Vintage, and the Chieftain. We chose the latter for its retro-modern styling that resembles a streamliner train from the 1950s, the Thunder Stroke 111 engine, the incorporation of current technologies, and its outstanding ride quality. Indian's ad slogan is "Choice is here in American Motorcycles," and the domestic motorcycle industry is about to undergo a transformation. These machines are designed and built in the USA and assembled in Spirit Lake, IA. Although it's the same facility that Victory Motorcycles uses, they do not share any components.
The 111-cubic-inch Thunder Stroke engine was designed to resemble the look of mid-century Indians with a flat head, multi-directional finned valve covers, downward firing exhausts, and parallel push-rod tubes. Whereas a typical new product launch takes 40 months, Indian's engineers made it happen in just 27 months. It's incredible to imagine that they started from scratch and tried to pack a modern engine into the look of an old one. The result is 119.2 lb-ft of torque. The powerful, yet smooth, engine is a joy to ride and produces just the right amount of rumble when rolling on the throttle.
Instead of a traditional key, the Chieftain (along with the other two) has an electronic key fob. In case it's lost, the owner can press a combination of pre-programmed control buttons to start the motorcycle. The Chieftain also features a power-retractable windshield that lowers into the fairing. A seat made of premium leather and lockable hard saddlebags make it tour-worthy. Features such as full Bluetooth connectivity, a 100-watt audio system, and an onboard computer that gives more than the basic information bring this brand into the digital age.
Trying to take a chunk out of Harley-Davidson's market share isn't easy, but the Indian motorcycles have the best chance. Well played, Polaris.

Polaris RZR XP 4 1000
Introducing the Polaris RZR® XP 4 1000. Now you can enjoy incredible innovations of the hallmark Power, Suspension and Agility aspects of RZR®, and an entirely new level of interior comfort and accessory customization. In true Polaris fashion the RZR XP 4 100 has brought a new vehicle to market that suit the needs of all off-road enthusiasts, which offers the ultimate RZR experience for four.
The RZR XP 4 1000 is the ultimate multi-passenger side-by-side, with all the same attributes as the RZR XP 1000: 107 horsepower ProStar™ engine with a true 999 ccs of displacement, 3-Link Trailing Arm Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) with exclusive Walker Evans position-sensitive, anti-bottoming needle shocks, the first-OEM offered 29 in/73.7 cm Maxxis Bighorn tires, high-strength tubular chassis and a high-performance on demand all-wheel drive system; with the addition of the most advanced suspension for performance driving and family cruising, and additional cabin comforts to not only accommodate two more passengers, but also provide the smoothest, most-enjoyable ride on a high-performance side-by-side.
The ultimate combination of power, suspension and agility starts with power. At the heart of the RZR XP 4 1000 is the 107 horsepower ProStar™ Twin EFI engine that was built specifically for an extreme-performance side-by-side and first found in the RZR XP 1000. The engine features Dual OverHead Cams (DOHC), four big valves per cylinder and dual throttle bodies for immediate response making the RZR XP 4 1000 the fastest accelerating four-seater on the market. The engine also provides unmatched torque across the RPM range for ample power to carry four people under any riding conditions.
In order to handle the massive power of the engine and keep the ride smooth, the RZR XP 4 1000 features the most advanced suspension for performance driving and family cruising. The RZR XP 4 1000 has industry-exclusive Walker Evans Position Sensitive Anti-Bottoming Needle Shocks on all four corners with stronger rear shocks and retuned valving at all four corners to ensure a smooth ride for front and rear passengers. To perfectly match the ride to the terrain and number of passenger, the shocks have piggyback reservoirs up front and remote reservoirs in the rear that are 16-position compression adjustable with preload adjustability. They are paired on all four corners with dual rate/dual spring coil-overs for 18 in/45.7 cm of rear travel and 16 in/40.6 cm of front travel, and industry-exclusive 29 in/73.7 cm Maxxis Bighorn tires which provide more air volume for a smoother ride and fewer pinch flats. With a longer wheelbase and 13.5 in/34.3 cm ground clearance, the RZR XP 4 1000 provides the most control and smoothest ride for all passengers.
For RZR sharp agility, the RZR XP 4 1000 has a new tubular chassis that reduces flex to keep the tires planted for precise cornering and an ultra-responsive feel. Paired with a lower cab frame, as compared to the RZR 4 900, and a flat second row of seating, which pushes the center of gravity low into the chassis, the RZR XP 4 1000 provides an incredibly nimble and responsive feel. For a more confidence-inspired ride, the vehicle is equipped with a new, high performance All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system that seamlessly engages both front wheels with full torque to keep the front wheels pulling stronger and longer, maximizing power delivery to the ground in every condition. The RZR XP 4 1000 also comes equipped with Electronic Power Steering (EPS) to reduce steering effort and provide all-day comfort while riding.
Inside the cabin, the RZR XP 4 1000 features several upgrades for the most comfort and convenience of any RZR. Up front, both the driver and front passenger will appreciate the seat sliders for tool-less, on-the-fly seat adjustment and space-optimized footrests for a more secure feel. The driver will appreciate a high-performance steering wheel with 10 in/25.4 cm of tilt adjustability. To stay connected, the RZR XP 4 1000 also features sealed smartphone storage that provides visibility of the display while protecting it from the elements. The rear passengers will enjoy a roomier rear cabin due to deeper footwells with angled footrests and sculpted front seats that provide more legroom. The rear seats also are equipped with cup holders and a 12-volt outlet for added convenience. All passengers will appreciate the newly-designed seats that offer substantially improved bolstering and more hip cushioning for a more secure feel, and a new film technology under the cover for a drier ride in wet conditions. Both the front and rear row have the slick blue LED floor lighting and floor cleanouts.
RZR XP 4 1000 features larger openings and a lower step-in height, for both front and rear passengers, for easier ingress and egress. The factory-installed quarter doors were designed for more elbow room and are equipped with a high-strength, easy-access latch for one hand operation and automotive-quality latching.
RZR enthusiasts love to accessorize their vehicles and the RZR XP 4 1000 was exclusively engineered for Polaris accessories. With integrated mounting points situated along the vehicle frame and pass-through areas for routing wires, accessories can be attached with minimal installation time. Additions, such as rock sliders and bumpers, easily attach and fit securely to the vehicle's frame due to Polaris' innovative Lock & Ride® Expanding Anchor; a revolutionary piece of hardware that expands as it is inserted into a mounting point. Lock & Ride® windshields, rear panels, roofs and doors work seamlessly with each other and install directly onto the vehicle frame's designated mounting points, making installation simple, and providing superior fit and finish.
The RZR XP 4 1000 will be offered in White Lightning and Titanium Matte Metallic, and will be available this month. More information about Polaris' whole line of Off-Road Vehicle offerings and Polaris Engineered Accessories can be found online at www.Polaris.com.

POLARIS REPORTS RECORD THIRD QUARTER 2013 RESULTS; EPS FROM CONTINUING OPERATIONS INCREASED 23% to $1.64 ON SALES GROWTH OF 25%
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Third quarter surpasses $1.1 billion in sales; Company increases full year 2013 Sales and EPS from continuing operations guidance
Third Quarter Highlights:
- Net income from continuing operations increased 24% to $116.9 million, or $1.64 per diluted share, with sales increasing 25% to $1,102.6 million, setting records for third quarter sales and earnings and exceeding $1 billion in quarterly sales for the first time in the Company's history.
- North American retail sales increased 12% year-over-year in the third quarter.
- Gross profit margin percentage increased 90 basis points to 30.4% primarily due to higher selling prices and lower product costs.
- The Company is raising and narrowing full year 2013 earnings guidance from continuing operations to a range of $5.30 to $5.37 per diluted share, up 20% to 22% over 2012 based on expected full year 2013 sales growth of 15% to 16%.
MINNEAPOLIS (October 22, 2013) - Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) today reported record third quarter net income from continuing operations of $116.9 million, or $1.64 per diluted share, for the quarter ended September 30, 2013, up 24 percent and 23 percent, respectively, from the prior year's third quarter net income of $94.3 million, or $1.33 per diluted share. Reported net income for the third quarter 2013, including both continuing and discontinued operations was $113.1 million, or $1.59 per diluted share. Sales for the third quarter 2013 totaled a record $1,102.6 million, which represents an increase of 25 percent over last year's third quarter sales of $879.9 million.
Scott Wine, Polaris' Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, stated "Our record third quarter results reflect both the ongoing demand for our existing products and the potential contained within the initial shipments of our model year 2014 vehicles, the largest new product introduction in the Company's history. In the third quarter, we launched more new vehicles than in any previous model year, led by the much anticipated debut of Indian Motorcycles along with several innovative variants of RANGERS, RZRs and Victory motorcycles. Additionally, to complement and enhance our consumers' experience with these vehicles our PG&A business introduced over 300 new model year 2014 accessories plus an expanded apparel line-up. While the new model year 2014 vehicles and accessories are just now arriving at dealers in meaningful quantities, the initial feedback has been extremely positive from consumers to the trade magazines. To receive such accolades is always gratifying, but we realize that we must remain focused on achieving the full market potential of these recently released new products while continuing to develop the next wave of industry leading products.
Wine added, "Though much of our effort was focused on successful product launches, we also achieved a number of financial milestones during the 2013 third quarter, including eclipsing the quarterly $1 billion sales mark for the first time in Polaris' history. We continued to solidify our market share lead in off-road vehicles during the quarter and our relentless drive to enhance profitability paid dividends as gross profit margins climbed 90 basis points. Our international business performed exceptionally well, up 38 percent during the quarter despite a weak economic environment. Part of the international growth came from our most recent acquisition, Aixam Mega, an important addition to our expanding Small Vehicles portfolio. "
Wine continued, "Our success over the past four years derives from our focused strategy - being the Best in Powersports PLUS, delivering growth through adjacencies, maintaining global market leadership and demonstrating operational excellence and strong financial performance. Thanks to our execution of that strategy, our sales growth continues to outpace our long-term projections and we now expect to achieve greater than $8.0 billion in sales by 2020, while our net income target remains at an industry leading greater than 10 percent of sales by 2020. While we are obviously very bullish about Polaris' future, we remain focused on near-term execution and are confident in raising our sales and earnings expectations for 2013."
2013 Business Outlook
For the full year 2013, the Company is increasing and narrowing its earnings guidance and now expects earnings from continuing operations to be in the range of $5.30 to $5.37 per diluted share, an increase of 20 to 22 percent over full year 2012 earnings of $4.40 per diluted share. Full year 2013 sales are now expected to grow in the range of 15 percent to 16 percent as compared to full year 2012.
