Lutheran Disaster Response

As a non-profit organization that operates a homeless shelter, we sometimes encounter people who question, "Why help those who always have their hand out -- asking for more? They should just get a job and then they could support themselves."
To this we respond, "Often, our patrons just need a hand up - to help see them through a difficult time."
Recently, this observation was validated through an exchange that Kevin Moran, executive director of New Visions Homeless Day Shelter, experienced with a past patron.
Kevin shares:
I had an encounter with a gentleman recently. He walked into my office, and proceeded to tell me that his family used to get food at New Visions.
He then reached into his pocket, and handed me several 20 dollar bills (totaling $160.00)... and said, 'use this for your ministry.'
I asked for his name and address, so we could acknowledge his generosity. His response, 'There's no need. The acknowledgement is that our family made it through... thanks to the food that we received at New Visions.'  And then he walked out of my office.
As we describe the ministry of New Visions, success is very difficult to measure...but clearly defined in the hearts of those we serve.
Lutheran Shelter for Children
Lutheran Social Ministries of NJ's Lutheran Home for Children was recently featured in an article published in "The Lutheran," a magazine of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
The article sheds light on the cooperative partnership between the Lutheran Home for Children and St. Paul Lutheran Church which helps New Jersey children aged 13 to 17, who have experienced abuse, neglect, exploitation and homelessness, receive temporary housing in a safe and loving environment during crisis.
Be moved by the assistance LSMNJ's staff provides to New Jersey's most vulnerable children.
