Lutheran Disaster Response

February is the best time of year to share stories filled with compassion, as well as caring. LSMNJ's programs have so many 'behind the scene' stories -- that we wanted to share two of our favorites this month!

Manuel and Elisa Hernandez have been happily married for 66 years! They came to part of the LSMNJ family in 1998 as tenants of Mirota Senior Residence, an affordable senior housing community. "They go everywhere together," shares Kerry Gill, property manager of Mirota. "If you see them apart, it's only because he's getting the car for her when they go out."

 ______________

Syreeta McCoy, a certified nurse assistant (CNA) at Lutheran Care at Moorestown, was running errands on a day off in early January. She happened to witness an elderly man slip and fall, due to icy conditions. Syreeta quickly responded by applying pressure to his wound, assuring them everything was going to be okay.

Later, the elderly couple expressed their gratitude; "She stayed with us in the cold, pouring rain until the ambulance arrived." The man required nine stitches and his wife broke her kneecap in attempting to assist him. "It was truly a blessing for us that Syreeta was there."

These two stories are great examples of how LSMNJ's mission of serving those who hurt, who are in need, or who have limited choices not only reaches out to those we serve, but also to those within communities across the state.

LET IT SNOW!
Crane's Mill Residents Enjoy Winter Without Worry

What are your favorite winter memories? Ours include celebrating the holidays with family and friends. But sometimes, especially as we age, it becomes harder to enjoy the winter season because of snow, ice, and extreme cold temperatures.

For Crane's Mill residents, those worries are a thing of the past. Read more for a look at how they handle the harsh winter weather.

NATIONAL DAY of SERVICE Reached Out to Assist Monmouth & Ocean Counties

LSMNJ is grateful to more than 50 volunteers from across the state who came together for last month's "Hand in Hand" service day. The group divided into three teams, working in both Monmouth and Ocean counties. Some helped to insulate pipes and paint homes directly impacted by Superstorm Sandy. Others prepared two locations that have been transformed into long-term recovery and relief locations. The next "Hand in Hand" Sandy Service Day will be held this Saturday, February 15. To sign up or learn more, please contact Alex Elefante at aelefante@lsmnj.org or visit lsmnj.org.

Future dates are March 15th, April 12th, May 10th, June 21st, July 19th, and August 16th."
