The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) announces new steps to work towards the long-term health and sustainable use of one of America's most important natural resources: its soil. OSTP is also releasing a Federal framework for soil science, developed in collaboration with more than a dozen Federal agencies, with input from approximately 80 stakeholders from academia, industry, non-profit organizations, and the agricultural community.

This webinar will cover the basics of small business innovation research (SBIR) and small business technology transfer grants: who funds them, who can apply, how to write a competitive SBIR or STTR proposal, and how faculty can use these kinds of grants as part of their research funding strategies. (Jan. 25)

Webinar for faculty on how to develop strong outreach and education components to meet NSF's broader impacts requirements. (Note that the emphasis will not be on education components for CAREER proposals, which will be covered in the CAREER webinar. (Feb. 1)
21st Annual UCLA Health Care Symposium
UCLA extends this invitation to UCLA students, faculty and staff to explore ways to increase awareness about gun violence as a public health issue and find solutions to end gun violence together at this year's symposium entitled, "Gun Violence & Our Health: Finding Solutions through the lens of Social Justice." (Feb. 11)

The purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity for the campus and local communities to come and meet with our staff and interns, to hear a brief presentation on a variety of topics relevant to intellectual property and entrepreneurship at UCLA and to ask questions and network. This month's topic: 
"MedTech Innovation - Introduction" (Feb. 3).

Webinar for faculty who have been successful in winning single-PI and small team grants and are looking to transition to larger team and center-level grants. We will discuss how these larger grants are different, what the expectations of the funding agencies are for large team and center grants, successful strategies and common mistakes to avoid. (Feb. 8)

UC/UCLA Funding
Award for highly qualified junior faculty from one of the four partnered institutions (UCLA, Cedars-Sinai, Charles R. Drew University, and LA BioMed at Harbor-UCLA) to conduct mentored, interdisciplinary and translational research. The program is specifically designed to meet an important goal of the UCLA CTSI: To provide the next generation of clinicians and researchers with the training they need to conduct research across engineering, physics and other disciplines to improve health (Feb. 1)
The University of California - OptumLabs partnership was established to help accelerate improvements in patient care and value. The 10-year strategic relationship will help transition California to a value-based health care system while leveraging the expertise of each organization to examine broader trends in care delivery. (Proposal Deadline Feb. 2)
The UCLA Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) is pleased to announce two Calls for Proposals for Transdisciplinary Seed Grants to further the development of new collaborative research and scholarship across the UCLA campus. The purpose of these grants is to catalyze new lines of research and new interdisciplinary collaborations with the potential for solving important and challenging problems that can have profound benefits for society. (Deadline Feb. 15)
Up to two grants of $10,000 are available for conducting pilot research activities related to cancer disparities in partnership with a community organization. The activities have to take place in SPA 6 and may represent an extension of an existing partnership or serve as a means of forming new partnerships. Applications have to include both an academic investigator and a community investigator. (Deadline Mar. 1)

Fellowships for UC postdoctoral scholars support training and research at a Mexican institution of higher education and/or research in the natural, physical or social sciences, humanities, engineering, or computer science. (Mar. 6)

Projects funded are expected to lead to development of major, long-term collaborations in the natural sciences, physical sciences, engineering, computer sciences, social sciences, or humanities; strengthening of academic and research capabilities of the participating UC and Mexican institutions, especially in Mexican regional universities and institutions outside of the traditional Mexican research centers. (Mar. 6)

Extended refers to those LSOs for which UCLA did not have an applicant as of the internal deadline. The first PI to contact the LSO office will be given permission to proceed as the UCLA applicant(s).  
Open refers to those LSOs for which the internal deadline has not yet closed. The submissions will be reviewed by the committee and the requisite number will be given permission to proceed as the UCLA applicant(s).
