In a world where a growing number of people lack food, water and sources of energy, providing these resources has become a challenge. To find new answers, the NSF has funded 17 grants, totaling $1.2 million, to support workshops on the interactions of food, energy and water, or FEW. Additionally, $6.4 million will supplement existing grants, enabling scientists to conduct additional research.

UCLA Sustainable LA Grand Challenge and UCLA Library are hosting a full day symposium to explore the challenges of sustainability and civic, open, and urban data. We've invited collectors, producers, curators, visualizers, and scholars of data and the city to share theory and practice in a series of conversations that can inform new directions in data practice to meet the sustainability challenges of Los Angeles as a cosmopolis. The symposium takes place Oct 23.
The conference aims at identifying and discussing the "Grand Challenges" (of which there are many) in construction materials, and potential solutions to these. Focus is placed on identifying groupings of challenges, research directions for the academic community, and industry to undertake towards solution of such anticipated challenges. The submission deadline for abstracts is September 30, 2015. Registration discounts are available through February 5, 2016.
