Startup UCLA seeks to develop a culture of startup thinking on campus by connecting UCLA students with LA's digital startup scene.

Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans, and women are underrepresented among M.S. and Ph.D. recipients in the natural sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics, a trend that continues throughout the academic pipeline-from starting assistant professors to senior academic administrators.  Grantmaking in this Foundation program aims to increase the diversity of higher education in STEM fields through college and university initiatives to support the education and professional advancement of high-quality scholars from underrepresented groups.

Arcus' U.S. social justice strategy works at the intersection of sexual/gender justice, racial justice, and economic justice, investing primarily in youth, communities of color, and targeted faith communities, with special priority for youth of color, transgender populations, and work by and for affected communities. The foundation invests in impactful culture, leadership, and protections for LGBT youth and communities of color.

The Annenberg Foundation invests in visionary leaders of nonprofit organizations that provide impactful programs and services through collaborative models.  We realize that social problems are growing more complex and, as a result, require new, innovative approaches through collective action by a cross-section of stakeholders, rather than isolated efforts by single organizations. As a grantmaker, the Annenberg Foundation is willing to take measured risks with a tolerance for occasional failure to seek out and fund outstanding people and organizations.  We understand the value of going beyond traditional grantmaking and are open to innovative ways to leverage our grant funds, as well as to flexible funding options for grassroots or emerging nonprofits. We give priority to nonprofit organizations serving the five-county region of Greater Los Angeles that are well-integrated into the fabric of the communities they serve.

The Fellowship serves in an advisory role to student groups at the GSD concerned with diversity issues, including Women in Design and the African American Student Union, supporting activities that promote a more diverse and inclusive community.  The Fellowship can play a valuable role in elevating talented practitioners with diverse experiences and sensibilities into prominent positions that effect positive change in cities. The ideal Fellows are global citizens who share the Fellowship's value of mutual learning with people from different countries and cultures.

  • holistic and embodied commitment to transformation of consciousness;
  • capacity to reach wider circles, whether locally, nationally, or globally;

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) announces this continuing initiative to provide dissertation awards to increase diversity in the scientific research workforce engaged in research on aging and aging-related health conditions within NIA's strategic priorities.  

Award: Per annum package consisting of: up to $85,000 in salary contribution; up to $100,000 for research development costs; and reimbursement for indirect expenses at 8% of modified total direct costs.

The goal of the NINDS K01 is to diversify the pool of independent neuroscience research investigators and to enhance the probability of success in obtaining independent NIH or other independent research support. Individuals from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research are eligible for support under this award if they have doctoral research degrees (Ph.D. or equivalent) and are in the first 3 years of a faculty position at the time of award.

This initiative encourages research that targets the reduction of health disparities among children. Specific targeted areas of research include biobehavioral studies that incorporate multiple factors that influence child health disparities such as biological (e.g., genetics, cellular, organ systems), lifestyle factors, environmental (e.g., physical and family environments) social (e.g., peers), economic, institutional, and cultural and family influences; studies that target the specific health promotion needs of children with a known health condition and/or disability; and studies that test and evaluate the comparative effectiveness of health promotion interventions conducted in traditional and nontraditional settings.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is committed to supporting research that will increase scientific understanding of the health status of various population groups and improve the effectiveness of health interventions and services for individuals within those groups. High priority is placed on research on populations that appear to have distinctive health risk profiles but have received insufficient attention from investigators.This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) highlights a particular community:  lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and related populations (designated here as LGBTI populations).

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grants (T32) to eligible, domestic institutions to enhance predoctoral and postdoctoral research training, including short-term research training, and help ensure that a diverse and highly trained workforce is available to meet the needs of the Nation's biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research agenda.

The goal of this NHLBI R25 program is to support educational activities that enhance the diversity of the biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research workforce in the mission areas of importance to NHLBI. To accomplish the stated goal, this funding opportunity announcement encourages the development of creative educational activities with a primary focus on Research Experiences.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to enhance the participation of individuals from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in cardiovascular, pulmonary, hematologic and sleep disorders research across the career development continuum.

Award: Per annum package consisting of: $100,000 in salary contribution; $50,000 for research development costs; and reimbursement for indirect expenses at 8% of modified total direct costs.

The purpose of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Career Transition Award (K22) is to help ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained scientists are available in adequate numbers and in appropriate research areas to address the nation's biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs. This award will provide "protected time" for recipients to develop and receive support for their initial cancer research program. In addition, this award can provide a two-year mentored experience in NCI intramural programs for interested individuals.

The fundamental research that ECR supports advances the frontiers of understanding about how more people learn, and use more STEM knowledge, more effectively. To do this, ECR projects are grounded in theory, ask well formulated research questions, employ relevant data and analytic techniques, and contribute to the growing body of literature on STEM education research.

Weingart Foundation provides grants and other support designed to improve the capacity and sustainability of nonprofit organizations delivering effective services in the areas of health, human services, and education for people and communities in need. The Foundation gives highest priority to activities that provide greater access to people who are economically disadvantaged and underserved. The Foundation also funds activities that benefit the general community and improve the quality of life for all individuals in Southern California.

The Weingart Foundation considers applications from organizations working in the areas of health, human services and education. Highest priority is given to organizations or programs that provide greater access for people who are economically disadvantaged and underserved. Typically, the Small Grant Program supports requests for agencies or for programs where at least 70% of those served are low income. Of particular interest to the Foundation are applications that specifically address the needs of low-income children and youth, older adults, and people affected by disabilities and homelessness.

American-Scandinavian Foundation - Awards for American Universities and Colleges to Host Norwegian and Swedish Lecturers
Anticipated Funding: $20,000 
Deadline: February 15, 2015
Provides funding to host a visiting lecturer from Norway or Sweden. Lectureships should be in the area of contemporary studies with an emphasis on one of five areas: Public Policy, Conflict Resolution, Environmental Studies, Multiculturalism or Healthcare.

One of the most significant challenges confronting small liberal arts colleges in the United States today is increasing the members of underrepresented groups teaching at such institutions. This program is for underrepresented scholars in the final stages of their doctoral work who need only to finish the dissertation to complete requirements for the Ph.D. Fellowships have previously been awarded in: African and African American Studies, American Studies, Anthropology, Art History, Asian Studies, Biology, English, History, Math, Modern Languages and Literatures (Spanish), Music, Religious Studies, Sociology, Women's and Gender Studies.
Award: $35,000

Aims to help increase the presence of currently underrepresented racial and cultural groups in the U.S. professoriate by supporting doctoral candidates as they complete the final academic requirement, the dissertation.

Invites eligible United States small business concerns to submit Small Business Innovation Research grant applications that propose to develop a product, process or service for commercialization with the aim of reducing disparities in healthcare access and health outcomes.  Appropriate technologies should be effective, affordable, culturally acceptable, and deliverable to racial/ethnic minorities, low-income and rural populations.

Aims to enhance the diversity of the health-related research workforce by supporting the research training of predoctoral students from population groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research workforce. Promising pre-doctoral students will obtain individualized, mentored research training from outstanding faculty sponsors while conducting well-defined research projects in scientific health-related fields relevant to the missions of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers.
National Science Foundation - Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers Program
Anticipated Funding Amount: $12,000,000 in total program funding

The Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers (I/UCRC) program develops long-term partnerships among industry, academe, and government. Each center is established to conduct research that is of interest to both the industry members and the center faculty.

Awards are for recent recipients of the doctoral degree for research and training in selected areas supported by BIO and with special goals for human resource development in biology. These BIO programs are (1) Broadening Participation of Groups Under-represented in Biology, (2) Research Using Biological Collections, and (3) National Plant Genome Initiative (NPGI) Postdoctoral Research Fellowships. The fellowships are also designed to provide active mentoring of the Fellows by the sponsoring scientists who will benefit from having these talented young scientists in their research groups.
Award: $250,000 per year for 5 years

Deadline: January 25, 2015 The purpose of this FOA is to invite applications for mentoring and professional activities to advance the careers and neuroscience development of diverse neuroscience researchers. The goal of this funding opportunity is to support mission relevant development and/or implementation of programs to: (1) increase the pool of Ph.D.-level research scientists from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research who are neuroscience researchers and (2) facilitate career advancement/transition of the participants to the next step of their neuroscience careers.
