UCLA CTSI K to R Workshop

The UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) will be holding an all-day workshop for investigators at the CTSI partnered institutions (Cedars-Sinai, CDU, LA Biomed at Harbor-UCLA, and UCLA) to learn about how to prepare successful R grant applications.

The Hoffman2 Cluster is a project that serves the UCLA research community with over 1,600 active users working with 300 faculty groups from 100 UCLA departments, centers and institutes. The goal of this meeting is to give you an overview of cluster operations, what services are offered and associated costs and some tips on the using the cluster more effectively. The Hoffman2 Cluster is a project of the Institute for Digital Research and Education (IDRE) Cluster Hosting Program.

The UC Berkeley Startup Competition is an accelerator that propels early stage startups to fundable and awards more than $25,000 in prizes. It provides entrepreneurs with the best possible resources - including training, networking, mentorship and cash awards. It is open to all UC affiliated applicants.

UCLA CEILS fosters the professional development and training of faculty who wish to incorporate evidence-based teaching approaches into their courses.

Provides funding to host a visiting lecturer from Norway or Sweden. Lectureships should be in the area of contemporary studies with an emphasis on one of five areas: Public Policy, Conflict Resolution, Environmental Studies, Multiculturalism or Healthcare.

Deadline: April 20, 2015
Supports innovative asset-building projects,which feature IDAs, financial education, and related services that enable low-income people to improve their economic status and become self-sufficient. ACF uses knowledge and information developed through the demonstration to advise the President and Congress on future uses of IDAs and related services for supporting families with low incomes in becoming more financially stable over the long term.

The challenge is designed to help spur civic innovation at the city, neighborhood, and block levels, and all sizes in between. In particular, we hope to generate ideas that focus on one or all of three key drivers of city success: attracting talented people, expanding economic opportunity and creating a culture of civic engagement.

One of the most significant challenges confronting small liberal arts colleges in the United States today is increasing the members of underrepresented groups teaching at such institutions. This program is for underrepresented scholars in the final stages of their doctoral work who need only to finish the dissertation to complete requirements for the Ph.D. Fellowships have previously been awarded in: African and African American Studies, American Studies, Anthropology, Art History, Asian Studies, Biology, English, History, Math, Modern Languages and Literatures (Spanish), Music, Religious Studies, Sociology, Women's and Gender Studies.

Aims to help increase the presence of currently underrepresented racial and cultural groups in the U.S. professoriate by supporting doctoral candidates as they complete the final academic requirement, the dissertation.

Deadline: LOI due December 27, 2014; Application due January 27, 2015 Invites eligible United States small business concerns to submit Small Business Innovation Research grant applications that propose to develop a product, process or service for commercialization with the aim of reducing disparities in healthcare access and health outcomes. Appropriate technologies should be effective, affordable, culturally acceptable, and deliverable to racial/ethnic minorities, low-income and rural populations.

Deadline: April 13, 2015 Aims to enhance the diversity of the health-related research workforce by supporting the research training of predoctoral students from population groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research workforce. Promising pre-doctoral students will obtain individualized, mentored research training from outstanding faculty sponsors while conducting well-defined research projects in scientific health-related fields relevant to the missions of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers.

Award: Predoctoral stipend level + up to $15,000 in additional expenses

Aims to increase the diversity of the mental health research workforce by providing dissertation awards in all areas of research within the strategic priorities of the NIMH to individuals from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in mental health research to support the completion of the doctoral research project.

Deadline: LOI due December 12, 2014: Application due January 12, 2015 Applications are for innovative research projects focused on minority health and health disparities. Awards are intended to support small-scale projects proposed by faculty members at eligible institutions to expose students to meritorious research and to strengthen the research environment of participating institutions.

Deadline: December 24, 2014 Aims to increase the pool of researchers in the social and behavioral sciences that are involved in research relevant to the prevention and control of crime and help ensure the fair and impartial administration of criminal justice in the United States.

National Science Foundation - Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers Program
Anticipated Funding Amount: $12,000,000 in total program funding
Deadline: LOI due January 05, 2015; Application due March 03, 2015
The Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers (I/UCRC) program develops long-term partnerships among industry, academe, and government. Each center is established to conduct research that is of interest to both the industry members and the center faculty.

Anticipated Funding Amount: $8,000,000 in total program funding
Deadline: January 08, 2015 Awards are for recent recipients of the doctoral degree for research and training in selected areas supported by BIO and with special goals for human resource development in biology. These BIO programs are (1) Broadening Participation of Groups Under-represented in Biology, (2) Research Using Biological Collections, and (3) National Plant Genome Initiative (NPGI) Postdoctoral Research Fellowships. The fellowships are also designed to provide active mentoring of the Fellows by the sponsoring scientists who will benefit from having these talented young scientists in their research groups.

Honors highly significant contributions to religious and spiritual understanding. The purpose of the Award is to honor and publicize annually creative and constructive insights into the relationship between human beings and the divine, and ways in which this relationship may inspire or empower human beings to attain wholeness, integrity or meaning, either individually or in community. In 2015-16, the Pembroke Center is awarding one-year residential postdoctoral fellowships to scholars from any field whose research relates to the theme of "Fatigue". Fellows are required to participate weekly in the Pembroke Seminar, teach one undergraduate course, and pursue individual research.

International Association for Dental Research - Unilever Social Entrepreneur Approach to Change Oral Health Behavior Research Award
Award: Up to $75,000
Deadline: December 12, 2014
The purpose of this award is to stimulate scientific research in social entrepreneur approaches to affect real behavioral change at the individual or community level that improve oral health, with a particular emphasis on interventions targeted to disadvantaged and vulnerable populations.

Award: $250,000 per year for 5 years
Deadline: January 25, 2015 The purpose of this FOA is to invite applications for mentoring and professional activities to advance the careers and neuroscience development of diverse neuroscience researchers. The goal of this funding opportunity is to support mission relevant development and/or implementation of programs to: (1) increase the pool of Ph.D.-level research scientists from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research who are neuroscience researchers and (2) facilitate career advancement/transition of the participants to the next step of their neuroscience careers.
