New Announcements

Sign Up Now for Text Alerts!

MCC uses myCommNet Alert, the community colleges' emergency notification system, to announce weather-related closings, late openings and early closings, in addition to emergency announcements, such as the recent shelter-in-place. myCommNet Alert delivers critical information to students, faculty and staff through text messaging over cellular phones. If you have not already done so, please sign up for myCommNet Alert. To access it, log on to myCommNet and follow the instructions on the myCommNet Alert channel on the "Home" tab.

Also, please encourage your students to enroll, as well. The more students who enroll and find value in the weather-related announcements, the greater number will be accessible should the system need to contact them in an emergency. If possible, all faculty who teach in a computer classroom are being asked to take a few minutes of class time to have students enroll in the system. All others, please encourage your students to enroll.

Faculty and staff promotion of this valuable tool - enrolling yourself and announcing the service in classes and at staff and club meetings - is the most effective means of increasing participation. And, as we have so many new students each semester who will need to enroll, it would be extremely helpful if faculty would consider adding this to their syllabi.

Should you need assistance in registering for myCommNet Alert, contact the MCC Help Desk, or x3456 or stop by Lowe L204.

School Supply Drive

The MCC Paralegal Association is sponsoring a School Supply Drive in partnership with The Village for Families & Children from March 25 through April 3. School supplies, including spiral-bound notebooks, pocket folders, lined and unlined paper, pens, pencils, highlighters, erasers, markers, colored pencils, crayons, glue sticks, rulers, calculators, index cards and scissors may be dropped off at the Academic Support Center or the Library. Donations to this drive help the children served by The Village return to school with the supplies they need but cannot afford. Cash donations are also accepted to assist families with the purchase of school uniforms. Checks may be payable to The Village for Families & Children.

Avoiding Unhealthy Relationships Part I

By Vivien Bergl, LCSW, CEAP - Solutions Program Coordinator

Do you find yourself drawn to unhealthy relationships whether they are romantic relationships, work relationships, friendships or family relationships? Do you know other people who seem to be in this quandary and you don't understand why? This phenomenon is unfortunately common. As in most human relationships, the dynamics are complex and the reasons vary.

If you or your child, friend or family member seem to attract this kind of relationship please read on. First we need to define what a healthy relationship is. Many people do not know what this is. They may not have grown up seeing a healthy relationship and last I heard they do not teach it in school or college. Maybe they should! Healthy relationships are comprised of the following traits:

  • Non-threatening Behavior
  • Respect
  • Trust and Support
  • Honesty and Accountability
  • Responsible Parenting (if you are parents)
  • Shared Responsibility

If you would like to talk to someone about this or any other issues, please call Solutions Employee Assistance Program (EAP) at 800-526-3485 for free, confidential assessment, short term counseling and referral when needed.  On the web: www.solutions-eap.com
