New Beginnings, New Resolutions Part III

by Solutions EAP

Last week we looked at the first step in making changes, looking at emotional responses.  It is helpful to keep these emotions in mind as you move through the change process; otherwise they may move you off course.

Having a specific plan of action is imperative when it comes to accomplishing any change.  Change is difficult and a lot of work no matter what but it's practically impossible without a plan.  How practical would it be for you to decide you wanted to ride in the Kentucky Derby if you never rode a horse? You would definitely need a plan to learn to ride and then to get into racing circles. But we do the same things at times when we decide on a change without having a plan.  "I think I'll lose weight.  I'll just stop eating as much." Sounds ok but what foods will you give up?  How will you make sure you have a balanced diet?  How will you handle cravings?  How will you handle going out to eat or special occasions?  What have you tried in the past that has or hasn't worked?

Next, have you thought this through?  What's the difference between wanting something to be different and being ready to "pay the price" for things being different.  For instance, if you think you want to change your job, have you thought of things you might be giving up in that change, like great co-workers, an easy commute, less pressure.  We may want the change but be unprepared for the losses and the unknown that the change may bring.  Think it through.

Next week, more steps to take to try to ensure the change has a good chance of success. Call Solutions EAP at 1-800-526-3485 for assistance for all of life's challenges. It's free, confidential and open to your family members. www.solutions-eap.com
