Spotlights

Students from Great Path Academy participated in the Imagine Main Street event in downtown Manchester on December 6. They transformed an empty storefront at 699 Main Street into a gallery for the evening. Some Great Path Academy students were able to work on their Senior Capstone Project by promoting, advertising, hanging art works and greeting visitors.

The artwork included large charcoal portraits, paintings, prints, ceramics and iPad-generated images, all completed in Ms. Hebebrand's art and ceramic classes. Anne Hebebrand is the Connecticut Art Education Association's 2012 outstanding secondary art teacher. The idea behind the Imagine Main Street project was to promote and develop the arts in downtown Manchester and to create a space for young, talented artists show their work to the community.

Students, parents and teachers came to visit during the three-hour gallery opening and were able to buy holiday cards, artwork and small pottery to support fundraising for Great Path Academy's Art Club. The evening was a great success with many visitors, a ton of holiday spirit, music and a performance by the school's mascot.

ICE RadioMembers of ICE Radio Gathered in the "Sweet Spot in West Lot "

ICE Radio partnered with the MCC Veterans Club to collect cash donations and goodies to assemble a care package to be sent to an MCC student/unit serving abroad in a U.S. military branch. ICE Radio would like to thank the generous learning community at MCC who pitched in and raised over $330 dollars in less than one week!

As an incentive to encourage more donations, ICE Radio offered a grand prize of a reserved parking spot in West Lot to one student. The winner, John Tarbox, whose name was randomly drawn received a special parking pass and will enjoy the sweet parking spot throughout the chilly months of December and January!  Felix Munoz won the second place prize, a free bus trip for two to Washington DC/Inauguration (courtesy of SGA). Stay tuned to ICE Radio for additional chances to win this sweet parking spot in Spring 2013!

December Holiday Etips

By Solutions EAP

Well, here we are already, December... for many of us, "The Season of Stress". Whatever stress you're facing this December, probably the most difficult is going through the holidays without a loved one. Grieving the loss of a loved one is difficult to begin with, but the holidays may accentuate the sadness and loss. The holidays may trigger powerful feelings of grief, especially if the person died on or near a holiday. Here are some do's and don'ts:

DO:

  • Expect to have feelings near the surface and that they may come out unexpectedly.
  • Decide whom to spend time with. Accept invitations with people with whom you feel comfortable.
  • Keep the traditions that are comforting to you and replace those that cause you pain.
  • Consider making a toast, light a candle, or tell stories in memory of your loved one.
  • Let people know if you're having a tough time.

DON'T:

  • Don't avoid talking about your feelings and don't hide them from children.
  • Don't isolate yourself.
  • Don't throw yourself into work or other activities just to keep busy.
  • Don't be afraid to cry.
  • Don't let people rush your grieving process.
  • Don't feel guilty about having fun.

If someone you know is grieving:

  • Encourage him or her to talk about their feelings and just listen.
  • Let them cry.
  • Don't avoid talk about their loved one.
  • Don't say things like:
    •  "At least he's not suffering anymore."
    •  "She's in a better place now."
    •  "I know how you feel."

Remember that there is no set time for grieving; everyone is different. Grief is a very personal, intimate and individual experience. Visit Solutions EAP online or call 1-800-526-3485 for assistance for all life's challenges. It is free, confidential, and open to family members.
