Spring 2015

Dear All,

New Year's greetings to you! I hope you were able to get a little time to yourselves over the campus closure.

I know for many of you, time during the holidays was spent visiting with or caring for an elder. The visit may have been planned and anticipated, or unexpected as a need or crisis arose. For some of you, your daily caregiving responsibilities increased as you had "more time" to provide care.

This may be a difficult time for you and your family members with the decline in an elder's health or memory. You may find yourself grieving as you witness the changes. Please know I'm here to assist you, either to help with planning and resources or to just listen. You may call CARE Services, 643-7754 to schedule a free, confidential appointment.

We have new workshops this Spring semester. Please take a look at the offerings and plan to attend one or all. These are brown bag workshops, so feel free to bring your lunch. Resources will be provided.

Take care,

Maureen

Webinar -The Mindful Caregiver: Why Self-care Really Matters

Many caregivers focus so much on trying to meet their care recipient's needs that they lose sight of what their own needs are. It can then become difficult for them to recognize how stressed out they really are. This workshop will be inspired to become "mindful caregivers."

When:  1pm - 2pm, Wednesday, February 25th, 2015
Where:  Online
Cost:      $15

Workshop: "Taking Care of SoMEone Else"

"The care you give to your loved one is the care you should be giving to yourself."

A dynamic 2-hour workshop for YOU, the caregiver! The caregiving of your family member may extend over many years, and the tendency may be to set your life aside during this time. You are invited to stay open to change, to think about other ways you might be handling your caregiving situation, and how you can take action on YOUR OWN behalf by learning a few tools to help YOU take care of YOU!

Subjects covered are: steps to identify sources of stress and how to manage them, negative self-talk, inability to ask for help, and identifying what we can and cannot change.

When:   5pm - 7pm, Thursday, January 29th 2015
Where:  Mission Hospice and Homecare, San Mateo

Movie Recommendation:
"Still Alice"
REVIEW EXCERPT:
"...Quietly magnificent, Moore plays Alice...with delicate power and masterly vibrato. She locates each sad nuance as Alice tries valiantly to hold on to her memory, her bearings, her old cunning, her family, her self. The struggle may be
doomed, but she can't stop fighting.

Book Recommendation

"Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End."- Atul Gawande

"We have come to medicalize aging, frailty, and death, treating them as if they were just one more clinical problem to overcome. However it is not only medicine that is needed in one's declining years but life-a life with meaning, a life as rich and full as possible under the circumstances. Being Mortal is not only wise and deeply moving, it is an essential and insightful book for our times..."
- Oliver Sacks
