September is National Cholesterol Education Month

Living Well Flyer Fall 2014

Celebrate National Cholesterol Education Month in September by getting your blood cholesterol checked and learning about food and lifestyle choices that can help you take control of your cholesterol. Because high cholesterol does not have symptoms, many people do not know that their cholesterol is too high. Check out Healthy U to learn more facts about cholesterol and heart disease.

Screening is the key to detecting high cholesterol. Health*Matters offers Know Your Numbers fasting health screening, which includes a full lipid panel, blood pressure, glucose and waist circumference, or see your Primary Care Physician (PCP) and utilize your UC medical plan benefit for the free preventive exam with no co-pay.  If you learn you need to take action to improve your eating habits or get more active, Health*Matters has something for everyone this Fall.

Eat Well @ Work:
Healthy Lunchbox Recipe
Tempeh Wraps

Although Labor Day may symbolize the end of Summer, it's not too late to enjoy this recipe. Tempeh is a high-protein food made from soy, but has a nutty flavor, unlike tofu. It can be found in the refrigerated section of most natural grocery stores as well as some mainstream stores.  Make these wraps on a whole grain wrap and serve with a side salad or other veggies for a well-balanced meal.

Healthy2Healthy U: Heart Disease Risk

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the US, and about half of us have at least one of the three key risk factors (high blood pressure, high LDL, and smoking). However, half of all people with heart disease don't have elevated LDL cholesterol, or other lipid problems. In addition, 25% of those that have had a heart attack have no identifiable risk factors at all. So what are we to do?

1) Get screened with Know Your Numbers screening or your Primary Care Physician (PCP). Getting screened is a great first step to assess your heart disease risk.

2) Learn more about cholesterol --  10 Common Cholesterol Questions from UC Berkeley Wellness Letter.

3) Assess your 10-Year Risk of Having a Heart Attack with the American Heart Association's comprehensive calculator.  This tool gives the option to complete the assessment without registering or you may register and track your numbers over time. You need to know your numbers: total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, Triglycerides, blood pressure, waist circumference and blood glucose.

4) Take steps to lead a healthy lifestyle, even if you don't have any identifiable risk factors. Eat healthy, be active, manage stress, don't smoke, get enough sleep and maintain a healthy weight.
See UHS Faculty/Staff Health Programs that can help you.

UCLWUC Living Well -- Earn a $75 Visa Gift Card Reward

Are you aware that the UC Living Well benefit offers eligible faculty and staff a $75 Visa gift card for taking steps to manage your health? You need to earn a total of 7500 points and one way to get there is by completing the confidential Total Health Profile (THP) for 5000 points and to complete one campus activity for 2500 points.  This month, consider enrolling in Know Your Numbers. Then, complete the THP with your specific numbers for cholesterol, LDL, HDL, glucose, blood pressure, etc. The results will help you understand your specific health risks and can motivate you to take action, if needed.

See all the campus program eligible for 2500 points by clicking on the flyer to the right. Learn more about UCLW, including eligibility, at
