 American Sailing E-News December 2012

 |
 | Greetings! Happy Holidays from ASA! Wherever, and however, you are celebrating, we wish you all the best.
We'll help you keep warm this month with sailing stories from Grenada, Croatia, and the British Virgin Islands. Also, be sure to check out the feature on our Caribbean Getaway Sweepstakes. Thanks to the help of our friends from Sunsail, we were able to raise nearly $18,000 for Hands Across the Sea, which supports Caribbean literacy, and one lucky person walked away with a 7-night BVI vacation! Read on for all that and more.

Please enjoy, and email us with your suggestions so that we can continue to improve it. We hope to see you at one of ASA's flotillas, member events, or regional boatshows soon!  Sincerely,
  Charlie Nobles
 Executive Director

Photo of the Month    for December 2012
Together we raised more than $17,000 for Caribbean literacy!
Meet Sara Moore, the winner of our Caribbean Getaway Sweepstakes benefiting Hands Across the Sea. Sara's prize is a 7-night charter sailing vacation in the British Virgin Islands with Sunsail.

Sara is an RN from Los Angeles, CA, who loves to travel and enjoy the outdoors. Sara has her ASA 101, 103, and 104 certifications and says, "I am always looking for more ways to sail." She's excited not only for her trip to the BVIs, but also to support the mission of Hands Across the Sea. She says she was inspired to enter the contest because, "I recently participated in a program that promoted literacy to elementary school children and thought Hands Across the Sea sounded like a great cause."

Congratulations to Sara, and thank you to all who entered and donated so generously! You've made a huge difference.

   Grenada Flotilla Recap

By David Kory
From across the U.S. and Canada, 56 sailors gathered at the Miami airport one October afternoon, awaiting our flight to Grenada and eagerly anticipating the start of our adventure in the southern Caribbean.  Though many of us had never met before, somehow we could recognize each other as fellow sailors, and many new friendships got off to an easy start. Of course, being such a large group, we occupied half of the seats on the airplane, so you had a 50-50 chance that anyone you met was part of our group. Read More      |
