CAPhO Member Spotlight - Amy Smith

Amy Smith, Pediatric Oncology Pharmacist

Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, Saskatoon, SK

What is the best part of your job?

The patients. It amazes me how kind oncology patients are. Even when they are faced with terrible side effects they are still such a pleasure to be around. The pediatric patients I work with are no exceptions. They are such a pleasure to speak with and provide care to.

What inspired you to work in oncology pharmacy?

As a practitioner, I knew I would provide the best care for my patients if I specialized in an area of pharmacy practice. I feel as though retail pharmacists are expected to be a "jack of all trades" and this is not a situation I thrive within. After completing a hospital residency program, I knew which areas of pharmacy I enjoyed and which areas I did not enjoy. So I looked for ways I could specialize in an area I enjoyed and therefore I pursued employment at the cancer centre in Saskatoon.

Where was the last conference you attended?

The last conference I attended was NOPS in beautiful Saskatoon.

Where did you go to university?

My university years were spent at the University of Saskatchewan followed by a year with the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region completing a hospital residency program.

What job did you do before working in oncology pharmacy?

I worked in different retail pharmacies prior to joining the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency.  I floated between various stores including Shoppers Drug Marts and Costco. I served a lot of different demographics of patients floating as a pharmacist and learned a lot about over the counter products. I still work casually at Costco pharmacy in Saskatoon. It really helps to maintain some knowledge of the retail side of pharmacy and it's surprising how many oncology patients I come in contact with at Costco.

What sports and/or hobbies do you do?

About a year ago, I began strength training to improve on my half marathon time and after completing the 2012 Saskatoon half marathon, I placed running on the back burner to train in power lifting. Since, I have competed at Saskatchewan's provincial competition and currently hold three provincial records. At our provincials I qualified for the Canadian National Power lifting competition where I placed 1st in the women's open 57kg this past March. Training at that level can be very time consuming so it takes up a lot of my spare time.

Also, I can't pass up an opportunity to mention my Patterdale terrier, Marlo. She is the best dog who has ever lived (definitely not an overstatement).

What book are you reading right now?

I always read two books at the same time so right now I am reading Emperor of All Maladies and 411. Emperor of All Maladies is an excellent read but it is taking me a long time to get through because it's a lot of history.

Where would you want a mystery flight to take you on vacation?

I enjoy taking the road less traveled so I would want a mystery flight to take me to Russia.

Where were you born?

I was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan because Abbey, the small town I grew up in, doesn't have a hospital. Just a grocery store, skating rink, post office, and a bar but isn't that the story of most small towns in Saskatchewan?

Pamela Yafai HOPA 2013 - Report from Pamela Yafai

I was very honoured to be selected as a recipient of a CAPhO Travel Grant to attend the 2013 HOPA Annual Conference, held March 20-23, 2013 in Los Angeles. This conference delivered quality, relevant-to-practice educational programming, which I intend to incorporate immediately into my current clinical pharmacy practice.

I originally joined HOPA just over two years ago in order to broaden my exposure to international oncology practice, as well as to network with pharmacists involved in similar areas of specialty practice, such as hematology and stem cell transplant.  Since joining, I have had the opportunity to connect frequently with other members through the online forum, and have utilized educational resources online through HOPA U. As the educational and networking opportunities available online through this organization have consistently been high-quality, I was thrilled to have the chance to further my involvement with this organization in person by attending their annual conference - and was not disappointed!

I was able to take advantage of the pre-conference "BMT boot camp", a half-day workshop covering key topics in caring for transplant patients. This information-packed session covered a wide range of practical topics such as graft-vs.-host disease, post-transplant infectious complications, common drug interactions, and long-term follow-up care. As I work within a centre providing care for patients within a relatively new transplant program, this session was highly relevant to my current clinical practice.

Another highlight of my conference experience was the "New Drug Update" and "Investigational Products" sessions, where I learned information on newly FDA-approved agents and agents soon to come to the market. As I am often involved with drug acquisition and caring for patients on many of these agents in Canada through the SAP process and within clinical trials, I enjoyed learning about these agents, the evidence to support their use, and their new place in therapy.

Another very interesting series of presentations were offered on "Controversies in Care", where speakers presented information on topics where controversy and uncertainty exists in light of new treatment alternatives and clinical study data.  Examples of such debates included the role of maintenance lenalidomide in multiple myeloma, treatment of CLL in elderly patients, and treatment of second line castrate-resistant prostate and metastatic colorectal cancer. Another excellent series of presentations were held on "Practical issues for Clinicians" where I learned practical information on chemotherapy-induced hypersensitivity reactions and high-dose methotrexate monitoring which I will immediately incorporate into my clinical practice.

It was very interesting for to note that we share many of the same challenges as our neighbours south of the border in the US and internationally. I was able to attend a dynamic panel discussion held to discuss many challenges surrounding safe and effective delivery of oral chemotherapy. A second panel discussion was held to discuss the never-ending debate on the best method of carboplatin dosing. During this session, an informal poll of the audience demonstrated a clear consensus in favour of developing a pharmacy-driven HOPA position statement promoting appropriate dosing strategies for this agent to aid in promoting best practices in this area, which I look forward to reviewing in the future.

Meeting other health care professionals on an international level who share the common goal of optimizing health outcomes for oncology patients was a very meaningful experience. It was especially wonderful to meet and share ideas with other pharmacists who are working to expand and develop their oncology clinical practice during the special interest group meetings and discussions.

Having the opportunity to learn about new developments, research, and drug entities emerging in the United States and internationally has allowed me to bring back, share and apply newly acquired knowledge here in New Brunswick and Canada. I was very fortunate to have had the chance to attend the 2013 HOPA Annual Conference and would like to wholeheartedly thank the CAPhO Awards Committee for providing me with such a worthwhile educational opportunity.

NOPS 2013 Update

"Many Paths, Many Journeys" is the theme of NOPS 2013, November 14 - 17 in Vancouver, in keeping with the many different ways in which oncology pharmacy has evolved and continues to grow as we seek to support the often complicated and unique journey our patients travel.

Oncology pharmacy practice continues to expand in focus and scope. We strive to broaden our role to provide care to the full extent of our professional abilities and in response to the ever changing needs of our patients. The symposium will provide insights into current standards of oncology treatment, challenging symptom management issues and technical advances supporting patient care. The program is available on the NOPS 2013 website

You can now submit your poster abstract online. Registration will open shortly and you will receive your personalized link next week.
