Message from the President
As you can imagine, the CAPhO Committee members are fully engaged in preparing for 2013/2014 events, communications and initiatives. One of these initiatives is joining with Sosido to give CAPhO members access to the Sosido Networks, an online exchange community to receive new knowledge in the oncology pharmacy field. Please read about it below.
Planning is well under way for the National Oncology Pharmacy Symposium 2013 (NOPS) taking place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver from November 14 - 17. The NOPS 2013 Co-chairs Kimberly Kuik and Susan Walisser, along with the Planning Committee, are working hard to develop a leading edge and inspiring program. Join us at this important annual event in a world-class city. Registration opens in May.
Another educational event to make note of is the XIV International Symposium on Oncology Pharmacy Practice taking place at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth from April 2- 5, 2014 in Montreal. Be a part of this biennial symposium that will showcase Canada to our international counterparts and discuss issues affecting oncology on a global scale.
As you will see below, the Membership Committee has been busy extending the reach of your CAPhO membership, and the Communications Committee is ensuring you keep informed about CAPhO initiatives and those of partner organizations and our members.
As always, just give me a call or send me an email if you want to discuss any news in this enewsletter or have any ideas about how to further engage all our Committee members!

Sosido Network
We're delighted to announce that, starting this spring, CAPhO members will have access to Sosido Networks, a unique online knowledge exchange community. Sosido will provide an innovative way for CAPhO members to stay abreast of new knowledge in the oncology pharmacy field through a weekly email digest of new publications by fellow CAPhO members and new abstracts from key journal feeds. Sosido will also provide a Q&A forum where members can get immediate feedback to their practice questions. CAPhO is pleased to be joining other Canadian oncology associations on Sosido including the Canadian Blood and Marrow Transplant Group (CBMTG), the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO) and the Canadian Association of General Practitioners in Oncology (CAGPO). CAPhO's participation in the Sosido project is made possible by an unrestricted educational grant from Roche Canada. More information on Sosido will follow in the upcoming weeks. |

CAPhO Member Spotlight - Tom McFarlane Tom McFarlane, Clinical Pharmacist, Oncology/Hematology, Cambridge Memorial Hospital (CMH) Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy Cambridge, ON News? The academic post at the University of Waterloo is new for me. Prior to being appointed, I spent a couple of years as a clinical lecturer there but my new role is much expanded. What is the best part of your job? There are so many I could name. I love working with students as they continually challenge me and renew my faith in the profession. I also work in an amazing multidisciplinary team in a rather unique practice environment - not many community hospitals have a full service cancer program. What inspired you to work in oncology pharmacy? Really it was serendipity. I found myself looking for a change of pace in my career about 10 years ago. A job with an oncology focus became available at CMH and it sounded like an interesting challenge. The learning curve was steep, but once I got comfortable in the position I realized it was exactly what I wanted to do. Where was the last conference you attended? January 2013, ASCO GI Symposium in San Francisco Where did you go to university? I received my undergraduate degree at University of Toronto and my Pharm.D from Idaho State University. What job did you do before working in oncology pharmacy? I spent almost 10 years working in community practice. What sports and/or hobbies do you do? I love to cook and have a passion for wine and fine dining. I also enjoy reading, running, and spending time with my wife and two kids. What book are you reading right now? Going Going Gone by Jack Womack Where would you want a mystery flight to take you on vacation? The Maldives would be nice. Where were you born? Palmerston, Ontario

CAPhO Member Spotlight - Anna Granic
Anna Granic Grand River Regional Cancer Center Kitchener Ontario What is the best part of your job? We have a great team relationship with our oncologists and nurses. The job is very challenging but so exciting with all the new targeted therapies being available. Gone are the days where there is only one line of therapy to choose from. What inspired you to work in oncology pharmacy? When I was working in the medical program, the unit also included palliative patients. Many of these patients were at the end of life stages. But there were also oncology patients who were admitted for symptom control issues related to their chemotherapy treatments. In dealing with these patients, I had to learn more about the disease and the treatments that were being used. So I kind of worked my way backwards and into the oncology program. Where was the last conference you attended? NOPS 2012 in Saskatoon Where did you go to university? University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario and University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta What job did you do before working in oncology pharmacy? I covered the Cardiac program, medicine, some renal and worked part time in our retail pharmacy. What sports and/or hobbies do you do? I love to walk and bike. My hobby right now is driving my 2 boys to their soccer practices and games, but I love to watch the sport anyway. What book are you reading right now? A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness Where would you want a mystery flight to take you on vacation? Anywhere in Europe would do ---- Croatian, Spain, Italy... Where were you born? Winnipeg, Manitoba

Oncology Pharmacy Research Project Update
In 2012, CAPhO initiated an Oncology Pharmacy Research Project with the help of Sean Hopkins from the Ottawa Hospital. As of February 2013, CAPhO has decided to put the project on hold due to lack of time and funds to support the research. CAPhO will be rethinking how the Association will fund, support, grow and sustain such research in the future. If you or anyone you know would be interested in being involved in this initiative to move it forward, please contact the CAPhO Association Management Office at info@capho.org.
