Our Mission

The Mission of the Missouri Main Street Connection is to provide communities with the knowledge and tools to economically and physically revitalize their downtowns.

MMSC works to ensure that the downtown districts in Missouri's cities and towns remain essential elements to their sense of community, their cultural heritage and to the state's economy. Downtown revitalization is encouraged through economic development within the context of historic preservation. The primary purpose is to ensure the long-term success of the downtown by creating, educating, training and empowering a comprehensive, professional, volunteer-based downtown revitalization organization.

Shop Small, Spend Locally

How do you support small business?

As a consumer, you are a key part in helping small businesses thrive by shopping or dining at small businesses, not only on Small Business Saturday, but throughout the year.  When you support your local small businesses, you reinvest in YOUR neighborhood and community.

The National Main Street Center issued the article "Tips for Small Business Saturday" in their Main Street Story of the Week suggesting ways consumers and communities can participate in the event, this year on November 29.

Affiliate Grant Communities Continue to Grow

The Missouri Affiliate Grant communities are growing in many ways.  One is through the addition of a new grant community, Maryville.

Maryville was accepted as an Affiliate Grant community on September 30, 2014, as the 24th community to go through this 2-year program.  Maryville is in the northwest portion of the state with a population of 12,000.

Downtown Maryville is comprised of 130 retail, service and professional businesses located next to the Northwest Missouri State University campus.  The University, along with the businesses, residents and local government, pledge to partner with the grant program to build their organization using the Main Street® Four Point Approach.

The current communities within the program are growing and expanding their capacity as Main Street® communities.  From fundraising to board development to work plan training, these communities are expanding their knowledge, their volunteer base and their capacity to revitalize their downtown.  Current communities include California, Canton, Drexel, Fayette, Grandview, Kearney, Lexington, Marceline and Odessa.

Congratulations to Holden, who just completed the 2-year program this month with their final visit from MMSC being a board planning workshop where goals and priorities were outlined for 2015 and 2016.  Holden is now an Affiliate level community working towards the Associate level within the Missouri Main Street Tier System.

Invest in Missouri Communities

HELLO FRIENDS OF MISSOURI MAIN STREET,

We have had an astonishing year at Missouri Main Street Connection. Astonishing in a good way - and you have made that happen!  We have welcomed seven communities as new Affiliates participating in our grant program this year, and Missouri communities all across the state are reporting wonderful success with their revitalization programs.

Most of all, we are grateful for people like you who contribute to our efforts on a regular basis and support our work with your enthusiasm and inspiration.

There is always more to be done, and new challenges ahead of us while we continue in the downtown revitalization effort.

If you are not a regular contributor to Missouri Main Street, we welcome your participation. You can become a member/investor for as little as $125 if your non-profit group has no paid staff, and for as little as 225 for a municipality or county government (depending on population).  We welcome business participants also.  Please see the details the benefits of membership and how you can become a member/investor at: http://www.momainstreet.org/mmsc-membership.php

Iconic Coca-Cola "Ghost Signs"  Alive Again

Ghost signs, also called fading ads and brickads, are found on buildings across the United States.  Many dating from the 1890s to 1960s are still visible though barely recognizable.

These hand-painted, oil-based paint advertisements usually "materialize" after a rain or after exposure upon removal of a later-built adjoining structure.  Generally, ghost signs are kept for nostalgic appeal, but sometimes remain as a result of indifference by the building owner.

Shortly after the invention of its "delicious and refreshing beverage" in 1886, Coca-Cola hired "wall dogs" (sign painters) "to extol the virtues" of their product through advertisements on the sides of buildings across the country.  Thousands of the faded brickads remain today.

According to Lauren C. Steele, Sr. VP of Coca-Cola Consolidated, in an article published earlier this year, the company has joined the movement for the rebirth of small town America with the restoration of their "ghost signs" and has been "identifying and refurbishing signs over the past few years in partnership with community efforts to revitalize downtowns" in their franchise territory.  Steele further stated, "We are thrilled to be able to support these downtown revitalization efforts."
