Economic Impacts of Missouri Historic Rehabilitation
- In 2000, an estimated total of $2.1 billion was spent on the rehabilitation of existing residential and nonresidential buildings in Missouri.

- Of the $2.1 billion spent on rehabilitation, an estimated $310 million, or about 15% of the total, was spent on historic properties (older properties that were on, or might qualify for, national, state, and/or local registers of historic sites).  An additional estimated $36 million was spent on rehabilitating historic public buildings, resulting in an estimated $346 million in total historic rehabilitation.

- The direct effects of historic rehabilitation are translated into multiplier effects, which encompass, as noted, such dimensions as jobs (employment by place of work), income (total wages, salaries, and proprietor's income), gross domestic product or GDP (total wealth accumulated, referred to at the state level as gross state product or GSP), taxes (federal, state, and local), and in-state wealth (GSP less "leakage" in the form of federal taxes).

- The total national economic impacts from the $346 million spent on statewide historic rehabilitation included the following:  13,830 new jobs; $459 million in income; $678 million in gross domestic product; and $144 million in taxes. Missouri garnered about 50% to 60% of these economic benefits and, as a result, captured 8,060 jobs; $249 million in income; $332 million in gross state product; $70 million in taxes (including $30 million in state-local taxes); and $292 million in in-state wealth. The other effects were distributed outside Missouri.

- The economic benefits from the historic rehabilitation are enjoyed throughout the Missouri economy. For instance, of the 8,060 in-state jobs, the construction, services, and retail industries captured 3,590, 1,291 and 1,062 jobs, respectively.

Accredited Main Street Communities
Congratulations to Missouri's Accredited Main Street Communities!

Congratulations to seven Missouri communities
who have achieved Accreditation for which they were recognized during the National Main Street Conference in Baltimore on April 2. To arrive at the Accreditation level, a Main Street community must meet the National Main Street 10-point criteria, and do so on an annual basis in order to maintain that status. The Accredited communities in Missouri this year are: Cape Girardeau, Chillicothe, Clinton, Lee's Summit, Liberty, Warrensburg and Washington. MMSC is proud to recognize the excellent quality of their programs, their revitalization successes and the commitment of their Board of Directors and staffs to arrive at this top level of Main Street achievement. Keep up the great work!

Downtown Washington Awarded GAMSA

Congratulations to Downtown Washington for this great achievement!

Downtown Washington, Inc. accepted the Great American Main Street Award® (GAMSA) during the National Trust for Historic Preservation's annual conference in Baltimore on April 2, 2012.

WashMO groupEach year, the National Trust Main Street Center recognizes five exceptional Main Street communities whose successes serve as a model for comprehensive commercial district revitalization.  The GAMSA winners for 2012 were selected by a national jury based on successful as well as innovative use of the Main Street Four-Point Approach®, while using historic preservation as the basis for all their revitalization activities.

The success of Washington, Missouri, can be credited to many, many local people who are committed to this proactive community.  The entire Washington community has stood beside Downtown Washington, Inc. with an open checkbook, whether it is for a new bridge or an all-abilities park.  No project was ever considered too big.

"We look forward with anticipation to more exciting things that are bound to happen in Washington with the leadership established by Downtown Washington, Inc.," said Gayla Roten, State Director of Missouri Main Street Connection (MMSC).

The other GAMSA winners for 2012 were Bath, Maine; Culpepper, Virginia; Jacksonville, Illinois; and Valley Junction/West Des Moines, Iowa.

National Conference

group photoThe National Main Streets Conference was held in Baltimore, MD the first week of April.  This four-day conference brought together Downtown Revitalization Experts, Managers and Volunteers to share educational opportunities and events that inspired all.  There were over 1200 people from across the Nation that attended this conference.  We are proud that we had 32 individuals representing eight Missouri Communities.  A few things we learned that we wanted to share with you include:

Eventbrite is a site to check out that can be helpful with promoting events, leveraging search engines to publicize your event, and selling tickets and tracking attendance, just to name a few things!  Check out the site at http://www.eventbrite.com/features/

painted bricks

Brilliant ideas don't always happen in meetings.  While exploring some of the locally owned boutiques, I discovered a very cool fundraising concept.  A local artist in the Federal Hill District of Baltimore had painted bricks with depictions of the facades of their historic storefronts.  This could be a fantastic fundraiser for our communities in Missouri!  So, in your community, think about partnering with a local artist, sell them in your downtown stores, and perhaps negotiate a 60/40 split in the profits with the artist.  I purchased the bricks for $24 each and absolutely love them!

Community News & Happenings

Clinton has produced a new promotional video on YouTube that includes many views of the historic commercial district and downtown events, besides all the other attractions in the Clinton and Truman Lake area.

Clinton promo video

This video is a great example of a downtown marketing campaign that others could emulate when preparing promotions for internet and social media.

Amazing progress is happening in our Affiliate Communities, and it is difficult to highlight only a few.

Seymour is planning a Piccadilly to be held in September in a Castle in the country!  This event is a great fundraiser that has been adapted and implemented in several Missouri Communities.  If you want to learn more about a Piccadilly fundraiser, contact the MMSC office at 417-334-3014.
