Congratulations to Ron Winner
Hyannis Chamber of Commerce John F. Kennedy, Jr. Citizen of the Year Award

Ron not only sits on the Board of Directors here at Habitat Cape Cod, he also volunteers his time on many of our fundraising and event committees, and can frequently be seen at our construction sites or events as the Grill Master, along with Team Shepley. Ron also volunteers with Champ Homes, Cape Cod Child Development, and Housing Assistance Corporation. In addition, Ron founded the Shepley Wide Open Charity Golf Event, an event which raises $30,000-40,000 a year for local organizations. It is no surprise to us that Ron was chosen as this year's John F. Kennedy, Jr. Citizen of the Year. Way to go, Ron!

Spectacle of Trees

This wonderful event, is hosted every year by Cape Cod Charitable FunRaisers, who describe it as "is a remarkable event where local non-profits put together Christmas trees adorned not just with tinsel and ornaments, but a host of fabulous gifts!"

Each tree, including the gifts, is a prize in a raffle drawing. You can purchase raffle tickets, or "Tree Bucks" to win that tree. Habitat is one of nineteen non-profit organizations who are participating this year.

We are planning some very special gifts for our tree: services that you can use around your home, such as painting or contractor services. In addition, don't dismiss our ornaments as "just" ornaments! Over 30 artists are creating handmade, signed, one-of-a-kind ornaments just for us - these are sure to be collector's items. The Habitat tree promises to be just as carefully crafted as a Habitat home.

If all that is not enough, there will also be a VIP viewing party at the Hyannisport Club at 2 Irving Ave in Hyannisport on December 3rd from 5-8pm, with a wreath auction. Habitat's wreath will be handmade by Maure Fennessey Ryley, a talented artist (who happens to be married to a talented builder we know). Check out Maure's website to see her work for yourself.

The trees will be on display at the JFK Museum in Hyannis from Friday, December 4th through Saturday, December 12th. You can purchase your Tree Bucks at the museum, or online at the Spectacle of Trees website. Remember, every Tree Buck you put toward the Habitat tree earns us $10.00. One lucky winner will take home the tree, and 100% of Habitat's Tree Bucks will go to Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod to help us build more houses.

If you would like to donate a service that can be included as a prize on our tree, it's not too late. Contact Wendy Cullinen at 508-362-3559 ex. 11 or wendy@habitatcapecod.org.

Our thanks to our wreath sponsor, Macombers of Marstons Mills.

Blitz Build Success

When your goal is to build One home for One family in One week, there is a lot of planning, and the work itself must be very tightly choreographed. It also helps to have great weather. Well, we can check off all of the above. The house was completed on schedule, thanks to a slew of devoted contributors. We cannot thank them enough.

Extra special thanks is to due to the team from Champ Homes. Champ Homes kept the Blitz Build site safe and clean for everyone. They were on top of things - no debris escaped them. And if that were not enough, the champs from Champ Homes were also masters at making sure that material was moved into place just at the moment before it was needed - like magic. Champ Homes is the BEST!

Annual Meeting Report

What a lovely time we had at this year's Annual Meeting. We were pleased to present the "Golden Hammer Award," which recognizes exceptional contributions that further our work, to Real Estate Associates. The steadfast support and generosity of Real Estate Associates and its agents has helped us to increase our capacity and build more affordable homes.  In addition, each year we honor one non-profit or public agency with the "Habitat Partner Award" to recognize exceptional contributions that further our work in building simple, decent, affordable homes for local families.  This year's award went to Charlesbank Homes. Since 2007 Charlesbank Homes has donated $260,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod, helping to build 7 homes.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the moving speech given by Wendy Oslund, who has lived in her Habitat home for 20
years now. Wendy said her home has been a haven - not just for herself and her family, but for many others who - because of her Habitat home - she has been able to shelter in times of need, including a friend who was escaping domestic violence and several foster children. Wendy said, "What a home Habitat built! Because of the house Habitat made for me, I was able to offer so many in need a home when they needed it most. I hope none of you EVER doubt the importance of the work you do. All of you, the volunteers, the donors, the staff."

At this year's meeting, four people were honored with 20-year volunteer awards: Richard Carroll, Bob Leary, Roscoe Riley, and Fred Yarger.  Another thirteen volunteers reached their ten-year milestone:
Judy Coppola, Richard Dill, Judith Keller, Kathy Kellogg, Margy Mahrdt, Brenda Haywood, David Bryan, Betsy Giles, Rob Parke, Beverly Parke, Martha Moynihan, Natalie Tudor, and Bernadette Waystack. We just can't express how humbled we are at the dedication these volunteers have shown us. Thank you, all.

AND - we have more thanks to spread around! Our annual meetings are famed for their wonderful food and this year was no exception. Thanks to everyone who brought a pot luck dish, and a huge round of applause to Team Shepley, who once again provided the barbeque, as well as sponsoring our meeting.

Volunteer Spotlight

Marilyn Nouri was the winner of the Don Dickinson Ambassador Award at Habitat's 2015 Annual Meeting. Don Dickinson headed Habitat's Land Acquisition program for many, many years, and used both his wisdom and all the expertise from his professional background to make that program a success. But he is perhaps best remembered by the personal relationships he developed in the course of his work, relationships that garnered not only land on which to build homes, but respect for Habitat as an organization. The Don Dickinson award is given each year to a volunteer who, through their work over the past year, brings us new friends in the community to support our continuing work on Cape Cod.

Vicki Goldsmith with Marilyn Nouri
Marilyn Nouri's work for Habitat has been multi-faceted. She served on Habitat's Board of Directors, and was instrumental in stewarding us through two strategic planning cycles. She has headed up the Family Selection Team for many years, a job that included helping with publicity and outreach, conducting information meetings, overseeing work done by the Office Team to review mortgage applications, shepherding those applications through the credit review process, working closely with family interviewers, and organizing family selection lotteries. In addition, Marilyn uses her background as a statistician to review applications for patterns and trends that help us improve our application process to be more efficient and responsive to shifting needs in the community. But Marilyn has even more talents! As Dave King noted when presenting the award, she offers landscape workshops to our homeowners and has provided many a landscape design to Habitat homes. And not to be overlooked - everyone's day is instantly improved whenever Marilyn chooses to share some of her baked goodies.

Bob Spence was this year's winner of the Everett Stoyle Spirit of Service Award. Everett Stoyle, a long-time Habitat volunteer in the Upper Cape area, was a leader who was known not only for his ability to take any problem and solve it, but also for his ability to make those around him feel glad to participate. The Everett Stoyle award is given each year to a volunteer whose work and manner exemplify the spirit and mission of Habitat for Humanity.

Bob Spence & Bob Ryley
In presenting the award, Bob Ryley expressed his admiration for "Spence" (as his Habitat buddies like to call him) in this way, "I have never met a person more comfortable on a roof, more early to rise, more able to work with anyone under any conditions or circumstances, with the uncanny ability to know when he is needed.
Dependable, talented, generous with his time, always there when needed most, and above all a pleasure to work with. A true asset to our organization, Bob Spence certainly exemplifies 'Generosity of Spirit' and more."
