News In Brief

 Last Gasp Bike Ride

This ride is an important fundraiser for Habitat (last year, Team Habitat raised almost $30,000), but it's also a lot of fun! Learn more about riding from our terrific team leaders - Frank Almeida or Kathy Herrick.

If you don't want to ride the 62-miles, you can still participate by supporting a Team Habitat rider! You will need to know the name of the rider you are supporting.

We are pleased to announce that Katelynn's Closet will be riding as an ally to Habitat for this year's Last Gasp. Katelynn's Closet was founded in 2008 with the mission of providing needy boys and girls on Cape Cod and the Islands, ages 4-18, with free, gently used and new clothing and footwear.

Want to ride? Register here.

Be sure to check "Habitat for Humanity - Cape Cod"

as the beneficiary you are supporting - there is also a place to add "Team Habitat' as your team.

Celebrations!

In case you missed all of the celebrations last month, here are some highlights.

Sesame Street Dedication - The weather didn't cooperate much, but we had a joyous time inside - and learned exactly how many people a Habitat for Humanity house can hold! We also got a lesson on how to enjoy all kinds of weather from the two-year-old who will be moving into 28 Sesame Street very soon - he reminded us that mud puddles can be a desirable real estate feature.

Wonderful gifts given by Heritage Museums and Gardens, Barnstable High School, The CAPTY Youth Group of Cape Cod Synagogue,

Falmouth Academy, and Pope John Paul High School. Thanks also to Rabbi David Freelund for a lovely rendition of "
Our House."

Oak Street Wall Raising - Four homes in one day! Need we say more?

Volunteer Spotlight

Hank and Karen Henderson had been familiar with Habitat for Humanity as an organization, but had never heard of a Habitat ReStore, when they read a Cape Cod Times
news story about the ReStore on White's Path in Yarmouth. They visited the store and were immediately taken with the environment: helpful coworkers, friendly customers, and a lot of energy. They began volunteering at the store shortly thereafter. Listen to the two of them talk about the ReStore and you will hear the word "fun" come up over and over again, and it is clear how much affection they have for the people they work with - both coworkers and customers.

Hank, a former engineer at a number of high tech companies, used to spend quite a bit of his time installing equipment at contract manufacturers, and training their staff. Now at the ReStore, he is one of the crew who "picks things up and puts them down." Hank says his work is mostly physical - unloading the ReStore truck, placing items on the sales floor, or loading a customer's vehicle. Hank also manages the ReStore's Facebook page, where he posts pictures of items in the store - it's a great place to see some of the newest merchandise. In addition, Hank designed and manages the ReStore website, a great resource for both buyers and donors. The website lists information on what can be accepted for donations, upcoming sales, and much more.

Karen used to work as the office manager at the Assabet Valley Chamber of Commerce. She says her volunteer job at the ReStore is a little bit of everything: she trains new volunteers, runs the register, accepts donations, prices items, and helps organize the showroom - Karen is the "ReStore Mom." But ask Karen about her most memorable ReStore experience, and she'll tell you about something that may not seem very maternal: "Breaking through a wall for the new addition. Breaking through dry wall is always fun!"

Hank's fondest ReStore memory is of the very first "Hot Dog Day," when he had the honor of being the cook. Since then, customers are offered free hot dogs and chips once a month.

Both Hank and Karen say that whenever they travel, they now try to visit other ReStores around the country. "When we see another ReStore, we always stop and take a look. This may be biased, but Cape Cod's ReStore is probably the best on the planet!"

For Hank and Karen Henderson, the ReStore is more than a volunteer job. "We are very happy to be part of the ReStore. It's become like a family for us."
