News In Brief

In the News

Congratulations to Habitat homeowners Emma Funfar and Karolyn McClelland, whose stories appear in the current issue of Habitat World, HfHI's magazine. Click on their names to see the articles.

Many Thanks to Hart Farms!

Hart Farm and Nursery in Dennis has been helping us turn landscape dreams into reality for many years. We thank them for offering us terrific, Habitat-friendly pricing on plants. This enables us to create beautiful plantings around our homes - because a home is more than a house - it is also a yard and a garden, and a place to watch the changing seasons.

The Way to A Volunteer's Heart

We are so grateful to the following groups who have generously brought lunch to our construction volunteers: First Parish Brewster's Small Group Ministry Team, First Church Sandwich, and the Dennis family. We've said it before and will say it again, construction volunteers work up an appetite. The meals were not only delicious, but also truly appreciated. Thanks!

Liz Simmons at James Burr Road, Brewster

Remembering Liz Simmons

Habitat lost a dear friend and longtime leading volunteer with the passing of Liz Simmons of Eastham this spring. A 20+ year volunteer, Liz was an active member of the Lower Cape Chapter in our early years. She primarily volunteered in family selection. She interviewed many, many applicant families, chaired the Lower Cape selection committee, and also served as a family partner. Whatever Liz did, she did with energy, spirit and compassion. A doer, a leader, a thinker, a lively spirit and a strong voice for affordable housing, and for the families we serve. She will be missed.

Habitat Nepal

Habitat for Humanity International has had a presence in Nepal for eighteen years. The Nepalese HfH office has been busy: their immediate priority is to distribute emergency shelter kits, and then conduct a housing inventory to determine how to best help rebuilding efforts. If you would like to help, please consider signing a petition asking lawmakers to make shelter a long-term priority in Nepal. Once you have signed, you will also have an opportunity to donate, if you wish.

Now that Spring is Here!

It's time to think about the Last Gasp! Last year, our Last Gasp Team raised almost $30,000 for Habitat Cape Cod. We bet you know someone who wants to wear a Habitat Team shirt!

Register here to ride.

Be sure to check "Habitat for Humanity - Cape Cod"

as the beneficiary you are supporting.

There is also a place to add "Team Habitat' as your team.

If you are not getting our Last Gasp Team emails,

contact Kathy Herrick and ask to be put on the list.

We are pleased to announce that Katelynn's Closet will be riding as an ally to Habitat for this year's Last Gasp. Katelynn's Closet was founded in 2008 with the mission of providing needy boys and girls on Cape Cod and the Islands, ages 4-18, with free, gently used and new clothing and footwear. Check out their website.

We applaud the important work being done by this organization and welcome Katelynn's Closet to the Habitat family.

Mitzvah Project

Andrew Hershfield is one generous young man. This 7th grader recently chose to help Habitat as a Mitzvah project. Andrew knew that he wasn't old enough to volunteer at a construction site, but he decided to use one of his talents - photography - to raise funds for Habitat by selling notecards featuring his photographs of our construction at Sesame Street. The cards are on sale at Market Street Bookshop in Mashpee Commons, The Pink Polka Dot in Falmouth, Uncle Bill's Country Store in Falmouth, and the Habitat offices in Yarmouth Port. All proceeds will help give families in need the opportunity of affordable homeownership. Here's what Andrew had to say about his project:

"Jews have a tradition of Tikkun olam, which means 'healing the world.' It is our obligation as Jews to share the responsibility to repair, heal, and change the world.  In other words, we must help others less fortunate than ourselves and give back. I love to build, so I volunteered for Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod. One afternoon this winter I visited a Habitat for Humanity site. There was no street sign and no mailbox, and as I got closer and closer to the site, I felt like I was stepping into a new dimension of helping. When I stepped out of the car I didn't care if it was raining. I just wanted to help by taking a hammer and nail wood to the walls and floors.  Unfortunately I wasn't old enough to build, but I was old enough to help in other ways."

Andrew added, "I'm looking forward to building when I turn 14." So are we, Andrew!

Volunteer Spotlight

Ed Mahan has been volunteering for Habitat here on Cape Cod for ten years now, starting with our Danvers Way construction in Hyannis. But he has been a Habitat volunteer for much longer, working at Habitat builds around the country while he was serving in the military.

Ed will do "any carpentry task that needs to be done that I'm capable of doing." He especially likes to be given direction. "I spent 30 years in management; now I do what I'm told." By following instructions exactly the way the site supervisor asks, he can say, I'm doing what the boss told me to do." Ed says this alleviates him from the pressure of "thinking about how the house is being built." As many people who have worked on a construction site know, there can be many ways to accomplish the same task. By following one supervisor's lead, he's actually helping to ensure that there is continuity and consistency at the construction site.

Ed worked for a power company, and then at Getty Oil, before ending up in the Air Force. He was an air craft maintenance officer, and an acquisitions officer, and worked in 24 locations over 30 years, including Korea and England, as well as all over the United States. He especially liked living in Washington, D.C., since it offered such a variety of activities. But DC was crowded, so when the time came to retire, Ed and his wife decided to return to Massachusetts, where they both grew up. They chose Cape Cod, and later moved to Plymouth. Their five children are scattered all around the United States, and he has 9 - soon to be 10 - grandchildren.

Like many baby boomers, Ed wants to use his retirement years well, particularly to give back. "My father never wanted to volunteer. Our generation wants to help, wants to stay active once they retire." Ed says he searched across the spectrum to find a volunteer job that was more than a once-in-a-while activity. Habitat is one place where motivated people can contribute their time and talent on a regular basis, and he is now a member of the team who work at HHCC builds on the Upper Cape, and you can find him at the job site almost every week.

Ed also says that he loves getting to meet the Habitat homeowners as they work on their house. "Helping them help themselves - that's so rewarding to me." But those who have seen him at the job sites know that he has an affinity for working with young people, and a talent for teaching new volunteers. He particularly remembers working with a high school team who were helping to install blue board. After working with them for a while, he measured a spot and asked them to cut a piece of wall board to fit the space. They seemed surprised that he was going to allow them to cut the board by themselves, but he said he knew they could do it. Ed describes how thrilled they were when the cut board and it fit perfectly. "It was like the sun was shining in their faces." To Ed, that's what makes a volunteer day great. "If you help a couple of people, and they help someone else, that's just making the world a better place."
