 | News In Brief

 Thanks to John Hall!
John Hall is Habitat's "Go-To" guy when it comes to tile. He has been installing the tiles in nearly every Habitat home for several years now. So it is only fitting that when our office needed some tile upgrade, we called on John. He did his usual exemplary work, and we are grateful.

Thanks to Clarke Distribution Company!
We are grateful to Clarke Distribution Company, who wanted to do a little nice something for Habitat homeowners in Falmouth, so they donated a gift basket of kitchen utensils and cookware to the two homes at 55 Glenwood Avenue. What a lovely surprise for Chris and Jenna!
 | With Sadness We are sad to report that longtime Habitat volunteer and supporter, Anne Stillwell, has passed away. Judith Page remembers Anne: "Anne loved shingling and pitched in eagerly for as long as she was physically able. She was also active on the Upper Cape family selection (interview) committee and co-chair for several years. She also served as a family partner. She was a faithful attendant at the Upper Cape Chapter meetings and brought her sister and family too, when they were visiting from Alaska. It was with great sadness that her health issues forced her to leave her home on Buzzards Bay and move into a nursing facility several years ago. You could depend on her to be outside watching the Falmouth Christmas Parade every year and cheering when the Habitat contingent marched or 'floated' by." Dave king remembers Anne: "Although it has been a long time since Anne was active in Habitat, I remember her caring contributions on our Partnership Committee.  She was very dedicated to Habitat's mission."  |

Haiti Update Five years ago this week, a devastating earthquake struck Haiti leaving 1.5 million people homeless. Since then, a complex story of survival, perseverance and renewal has unfolded. Habitat for Humanity served more than 55,300 people impacted by the disaster. HHCC tithes 10% of our unrestricted funds to help support the work in Haiti. To learn more, see Habitat Haiti's  5-year video and 5-year report.   |
 | Construction Update    Volunteers may sign up with VolunteerUP, our on-line calendar, to work at any active construction site.
Falmouth Homeowners have moved in!  Many thanks to all who made this possible, especially the amazing Mr. Bob Leary, who took a challenging assignment and saw it through from beginning to end.   Orleans
At 19 Bevan Way, we are working on punch list items getting ready for a January 31st dedication ceremony. At 16 Bevan Way, we're working on flooring and at 10 Bevan Way, we've got sub-contractors coming in to work on plumbing and electric, while our volunteers take a break. Work days at this site are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.   Barnstable Volunteers are working on punch list items to get the site ready for the subcontractors. We will open the site up for volunteers again once all the plumbing, electric, and insulation is complete.   Harwich Site work continues, and some off-site construction has just started to prepare for our anticipated spring wall raising. |

 | Welcome to Roy Colby - Lead Carpenter

We are happy to welcome a second Lead Carpenter to our Habitat staff: Roy Colby. Roy has been a builder most of his life, working for Cape Associates for 17 years before turning to teaching. Roy taught in the Carpentry Shop at Cape Tech in Harwich from 2008 - 2013. Roy says he picked up carpentry skills from his do-it-yourself father and also from his uncle, a builder. Roy's uncle once gave him instructions to "pick up all the nails and straighten them - as a way to keep me out of his hair." Roy enjoys framing houses and looks forward to working on Habitat homes: simple, well-built houses.
As the son of a United Church of Christ minister, Roy and his family travelled all over the country when he was young. They lived in New Hampshire, Chicago, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Buffalo, New York. But the family had a summer home in Eastham on Cape Cod, where his parents eventually retired, and Roy says "Cape Cod was the biggest constant in my life." As a young adult, Roy lived a few different places himself, but always returned to Cape Cod. Although he enjoys travel, he says there is "something about the Cape" He appreciates the changing New England seasons, and likes to have sand in his shoes.   Roy lives in Harwich with his wife Rachael and three of their four children: his daughter Anna is 19 and attends Cape Cod Community College studying education, his daughter Abby, 15, is a sophomore, and his son Andrew, 12, is in seventh grade. His oldest daughter, Ariel, is a phlebotomist who lives in Marstons Mills with her husband.   Roy is not a stranger to Habitat's work. He volunteered on HHCC's very first home, in Wellfleet in 1989. He also put in some volunteer days last year at the Ginger Lane house in Centerville. Roy says he is excited to be here, and looks forward to the opportunity to teach people who are eager to learn new things. "I'm thankful for this opportunity."    We are also thankful - that Roy has joined our Habitat team. Roy is already busy doing some off-site construction to prepare for our Harwich construction this spring, but you'll be seeing him on the job sites soon!   |
