News In Brief
Nothing Stops Emma!
On Saturday, November 1st, Emma was scheduled to run the "Falmouth in the Fall" race, but due to the weather, the race was cancelled. But Emma ran anyway! Here's the story in her own words:
-
It is important for me to run this race for Habitat; for the people who made donations. We run Falmouth in the Fall as a way to say thank you to all of the Habitat community. The weather was wet, cold, and windy but I kept moving. There were about 12 other runners who showed up to run too! It was a very special moment. So thank you to all who made donations!!! You kept me going with wet socks, a cold nose, and a huge smile. Thank you!!!

All my best, Emma
It's not too late to support Emma's fundraising goal. You can donate online or by sending a check to the Habitat office: 411 Main Street, Suite 6, Yarmouth Port, MA 02675. Please write "Emma's Run" in the comment box on-line, or in the subject line of your check.
Thanks to Infor Global Solutions!
We were pleased to welcome Infor Global, an international company with a local office in Hyannis, to our Barnstable build site. The group tackled several tasks: installing both strapping and interior partitions, and doing some sidewall shingling. They truly enjoyed their Habitat experience. As participant Kathleen Cuzner said, "We absolutely LOVE the ministry of Habitat for Humanity and would like to continue to be a part of it. It is a blessing to hear of the wonderful work that has been done here on Cape Cod, and the work that will continue to be done. We all *truly* enjoyed being able to literally lend a hand with this project. I think many of us were quite surprised that we were trusted with drills! The main volunteers who coached and lead us were just wonderful. They were so patient and kind and so wonderful to work with. When I think about how much time each of those guys gives it is really quite humbling to me."
Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod Board of Directors
Like all Habitat volunteers, a team from HHCC's board of directors didn't let a little rain stop them from sidewall shingling at our Bevan Way construction site. And like all Habitat volunteers, this group represented a mix of experienced and non-experienced workers - from professional builders, to experienced volunteers, to novices - this is what makes Habitat special. We are glad our board got to experience the pride of accomplishment that comes with working on a Habitat build site. We won't be at all surprised if they tell us that building is a lot more fun than board work!
Thanks to our Donors, we're in the Top Twelve
Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod was recognized by Habitat International as one of the top twelve medium affiliates for our "Cars for Homes" revenue. As the Cars for Homes newsletter stated, "Over the past 18 months, revenue from Cars for Homes to Cape Cod Habitat increased dramatically: from $825 in the second quarter of FY2013 to $5,544 in the fourth quarter of FY2014. That's a seven-fold increase!" We're pleased to be recognized, but we couldn't have done it without our generous donors, who turned their old car, truck, RV, boat, or motorcycle - running or not - into decent affordable homes through the Cars for Homes program. Have a vehicle to donate? Call 1-877-277-4343 toll free or donate online at www.carsforhomes.org.

Falmouth Dedication
That special lighting that only comes out at dusk, along with a cozy tent, made the Falmouth Dedication seem very festive on October 28th. A series of unusual circumstances left us without electricity at the house and searching for a place near to, but not inside the home, to hold our ceremony. All the elements came together serendipitously at the last minute, in typical Habitat fashion. Many thanks to the Barnstable County Sheriff's Department for accommodating us on short notice, and all the volunteers who helped create the lighting, especially Sue Ernst and Frank Almeida.
This gorgeous duplex required extra time to build due to its complex construction, but was well worth the effort. Kudos to a dedicated volunteer crew for all their hard work! We are very happy for Chris and Jenna, who will soon be moving into their new homes.

Have you been to the ReStore lately? If so, you have probably noticed that the place is hopping! ReStore gross sales have increased 36% for the first quarter of 2014, as compared to the first quarter of 2013, and that trend is continuing each month. We are working hard to increase the volunteer corps at the ReStore, and to maintain a high level of customer service by also increasing staff. Meet the two newest Restore Staff members, Gift Chimwaza and Mary Sweeney. Gift Chimwaza has been volunteering at the ReStore for some time, and is a customer favorite. Gift tells us he began his volunteer work at the ReStore as an alternative to "staying home with nothing to do" when he was new to this country. Gift moved to the US in 2013 to be with his wife, Karen, who had been a Peace Corps volunteer in his native Malawi. Gift, who speaks four languages, was the translator for her Peace Corps group. Karen and Gift are now expecting their first child in May, and Gift is working towards getting his US citizenship. With a smile, Gift describes his job as "moving things in and out, in and out." He enjoys the work, which he says offers him the opportunity to "learn more skills and make relationships with the people." He appreciates his co-workers and the many ReStore volunteers, who have helped him learn to communicate with customers. The appreciation goes both ways. Donna Baldwin, ReStore manager, says, "Gift never stops smiling and he works non-stop. I've had so many comments from customers about how special he is." Mary Sweeney has only been working at the ReStore a few weeks, but she is no stranger there. "I consider myself a frequent flier," says Mary, who - in addition to spending a great deal of time at our Cape Cod ReStore scouting deals for herself, her friends, and her neighbors - makes it a practice to visit other ReStores wherever she travels. Mary has lived in a number of places, including New York City, California, and New Orleans. She settled on Cape Cod 14 years ago. A chef for 27 years, and a business/restaurant owner for 7 years on the Lower Cape, she has also worked as a set decorator in the film industry. She brings a set decorator's talents to her ReStore position. Donna Baldwin says, "Mary has a wonderful eye for putting things together for displays in the store. She 'gets' color, and how to coordinate a look, she gets it all." For Mary, the ReStore is "ever-changing - and that's what makes it fun. We have great volunteers. I feel like I've met my people."

Volunteer Spotlight
 | Marc Beroz (far right) Working on the Wall raising Day in Falmouth |
In the fall of 2013, Marc Beroz saw an item in the newspaper about something called a "Wall Raising" at a Habitat for Humanity construction site in Falmouth, and thought that might be a fun thing to do for a day. "Once I saw what was going on" Marc says, "I just kept signing up to work." He ended up as a regular volunteer at 55 Glenwood Avenue, working through the seasons until volunteer construction was completed last month. Marc said he came into the experience with few house building skills, but simply tried to do whatever he was asked, to help expedite the building process. Marc ended up doing everything from "pounding nails to digging holes, putting up clapboard to sanding walls."
Marc was a former soil scientist, and worked for the Federal government at sites in Utah and Wyoming before starting his own business in Connecticut in 1986. He retired to Cape Cod in 2012. He says that his work making soil maps was quite different from volunteering with Habitat. "I went into natural resources to be outside and I liked to work independently, but that has its down side. With Habitat, I went from working with no people to working with lots of people. It was quite an adjustment. I learned that working with volunteers is more than building. It's also discussion and exchanging ideas. That was a pleasant surprise. Whenever you are learning about other people, you are also learning about yourself - and it helps you grow as an individual."
Marc believes that the group of regulars who worked at Glenwood Avenue had a particular camaraderie, born of "working together in those really cold weather conditions we had. We would gather around the coffee pot, not just for the coffee, but for the heat! As a group, it knit us together more than you would expect."
Bonding with his fellow volunteers was one of the reasons Marc kept coming back to build, even in the freezing cold. The other was the homeowners who were so "appreciative of how everything is put together and how much time everyone spent. It was heartwarming to see how happy it made them. That motivated me to put in my best effort and to keep coming back."
Marc admits that he is a perfectionist, which can be both a blessing and a curse on a job site. He preferred to take his time in doing the job right, rather than rush to get it done. "Some of my best work is in places that you'll never see!" he says. It pleases him to know that, even if the work is behind a wall, the homeowners know the time and care that went into their home.
And Marc's advice for new volunteers? "You don't have to come with any skill set. You will learn on the job and anything you do will contribute to the goal of building the house. Any contribution you make benefits the lives of others and, in turn, enriches your own life. We each contribute a little, and it benefits a homeowner, and they go on to help the whole community."
