Running for Habitat!
Habitat homeowners Emma and Amanda are at it again! They will be running for Falmouth in the Fall on November 2nd, starting at 1:00pm. You can help - support their fundraising goal online or by sending a check to the Habitat office: 411 Main Street, Suite 6, Yarmouth Port, MA 02675. Please write "Emma's Run" in the comment box on-line, or in the subject line of your check.

Thanks to the Coast Guard!
Whenever it is time to raise walls, we are always aware of how heavy the walls, with the roof gables attached, are. It's no easy feat to lift them, and some extra muscle is appreciated. That's why we are grateful to the Coast Guard, who always respond to our calls for a little extra help. Some even traveled all the way from Martha's Vineyard just to lift walls at the beginning of our work day! We also want to mention the Coast Guard team who came to help out at both our Orleans and Sesame Street construction sites this October - with the Coast Guard, we got a lot of work done!

Brewster Baptist
A team from Brewster Baptist Church travelled to the Mid-Cape to help raise walls at Sesame Street on September 27th. Thanks to a hard-working team, who put in a great day's work!

Construction Update
Volunteers may sign up with VolunteerUP, our on-line calendar, to work at any active construction site.
Orleans
12 and 14 Bevan Way have been dedicated, and homeowners will soon be moving in. Over at 19 Bevan Way, we getting ready to paint the interior and install interior trim and flooring. 16 Bevan Way is nearly ready for blueboard. 10 Bevan Way has walls raised, roof trusses up, and roof sheathing on. We're doing strapping, rigid insulation, and hurricane clips next. Also at this site: a crew of "specialists" are building decks at all of the homes. Work days at this site are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Falmouth
We've just completed installing the countertops and are down to punch list items. The dedication has been scheduled for October 28th.
Barnstable
We've been putting up roof trusses and sheathing the roof, as well as installing lally columns and bulkheads. Work days for this site are Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Harwich
Here's the work site work in progress. We are planning a spring, 2015 Wall Raising.
Currently, we have 17 open, active construction permits and we are engaged in all phases of construction from foundations to certificate of occupancy.

Emma's Revolution Concert
Emma's Revolution (award-winning, activist musicians Pat Humphries & Sandy O) create hauntingly beautiful harmonies and powerful acoustic instrumentals that deliver the energy and strength of their convictions. They have sung for the Dalai Lama, been praised by Pete Seeger, and recorded with Holly Near. Emma's Revolution consistently delivers performances that are an uprising of hope and harmony so powerful audiences leap to their feet.
Emma's Revolution will perform a benefit concert for Habitat at the Brewster Meeting House on October 17th.
THE NEW YORK TIMES: "Fervent and heartfelt"
WMNF RADIO, Tampa FL: "Great melodies and harmonies with a driving beat that just makes you want to, well, RISE! . . . truly exciting, fun, invigorating and right on point."

Dedications and Wall Raisings
JOIN US! - Falmouth Dedication Ceremony
Tuesday, October 28, 5:30pm
55A & B Glenwood Avenue, Falmouth
Directions and parking instructions here
This structure was a tricky one to build, but the house looks so beautiful now that it is complete - and we think you will find that this charming duplex complements its neighborhood. Hats off to Jenna and Chris, as well as all the hard working volunteers - and especially to House Leader Bob Leary - who didn't let a little rain, or snow, or freezing cold, (or rain and snow and freezing cold combined) stop them from building! Now it is time to celebrate! Join us to bless the homes.
Wall Raisings
We've just raised walls on three new homes - two in Barnstable and one in Orleans. Thanks to everyone who came out to join our crews - the long-time, loyal volunteers and the brand-new, fresh volunteers alike - for making these days so successful.
Dedications
What a beautiful day it was for a Dedication Ceremony of 12 and 14 Bevan Way, Orleans on October 6th. It was certainly a packed house! Heartfelt speeches, gifts both to and from the homeowners, moving blessings... it was everything you would want a Dedication to be. And soon Caitlin and Kim and their families will be moving in.

Many Hands, Many Communities
What do Cape Cod Synagogue, the Waldorf School of Cape Cod, and Longtime Habitat Volunteer, Carolyn Crowell, have in common? They are all snack volunteers at our Sesame Street construction site.
A longtime custom at all of our construction sites is the short mid-morning break for a devotion and a snack, as a way to both spiritually and physically nourish the construction volunteers. The devotion is provided by a volunteer, as is the snack, and the construction workers consistently tell us how much they appreciate this moment in their day. At our Sesame Street, Barnstable, site, the snacks will truly be a community offering. Look at the individuals and groups who have all stepped forward top bring snacks - each of them forward to bring snacks - each of them has committed to help out once a month for the duration of construction. In Memory
We note with sadness the recent passing of Kel Parkinson, of Dennis. Kel served as the volunteer on-site leader for the construction of our first two homes in Orleans - in 2000 and 2002. While this volunteer leadership role is always a huge commitment, it was even more daunting back in the days when we had no construction professionals on staff. Our condolences to Kel's wife, Anne, and all his family and friends. We will hold dear in our hearts the memory of this good-hearted and generous man. ~ Vicki Goldsmith |
Volunteer Spotlight
 | Chris installing sidewall shingles at Peter's House |
Chris Stamas has been volunteering with Habitat since 2011. In three years, he's become one of the "regulars," working on-site just about every week, participating in all aspects of home construction. This includes building exterior and interior walls; shingling; installing flooring, doors, and windows; and working on the painting and finish carpentry - as is typical of Habitat volunteers, he helps with anything that doesn't require a license.
Chris has always been handy, and learned a lot from his father by working alongside him on many projects around the house. A Vice President of Sales and Marketing for several manufacturers of medical laboratory products, Chris was always intrigued by home design and construction and enjoyed learning whatever he could from his own home projects, and from watching shows like This Old House. But Chris wanted to learn more, so when he retired in February of 2011, he acted on a long-time goal: to volunteer at Habitat for Humanity.
He says he enjoys the additional skills he's picked up as a volunteer. "Prior to volunteering at Habitat I had considered myself to be pretty handy with home improvement projects. When my children were young they would call me 'Mr. Fix-it.' Working with the many talented volunteers at Habitat on Cape Cod - many who have volunteered for 20 years or more - has humbled me greatly and let me know how much more I need to learn. I like the fact that I'm always learning due to the many varied tasks required in building a home and the people I work with. Once you commit yourself to volunteering at Habitat you become a member of a very talented team."
Chris has had a very interesting career. He sold products that included diagnostic equipment and disposables used in hospitals, universities, and pharmaceutical and biotech laboratories. He had global responsibility for the last 20 years of his career, which required extensive travel throughout the world, including an opportunity to live in England for 4 years which Chris describes as "a tremendous experience."
As a Habitat volunteer, Chris says he "loves the satisfaction of knowing that my volunteer experience has a positive impact on the lives of others." Chris likes getting to know the homeowners on a personal basis, and he feels this helps the volunteers understand "the huge impact owning a home has on their lives... and also allows them to remain on Cape Cod."
For Chris, seeing the house go from poured foundation to a finished home, and watching home owners and their families actually move into the home brings "a tremendous feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment."
