Construction Update

Orleans
We are finishing up the interiors of 12 and 14 Bevan Way, where we are counting down to our Dedication Ceremony on October 6th. Over at 19 Bevan Way, we are just starting to blueboard, and plaster work will soon follow - after some electrical work, 16 Bevan Way will not be far behind. We start work on 10 Bevan Way in late September, with a Wall Raising scheduled for the 20th and framing to follow. Work days at this site are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Falmouth
Interior work is the focus at Glenwood Avenue, with trim, paint, and kitchens all underway or about to start. We expect to schedule a Dedication soon for this home, so stay tuned! Work days at this site are Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Barnstable
The Wall Raising has been scheduled for September 27th - after which we will be framing for the first few weeks. Volunteers may sign up with VolunteerUP, our on-line calendar, starting September 15th. Work days for this site are Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Greetings!

We are busy, busy, busy! We have six houses under construction, and three new homes about to start. Kick-Offs, Wall Raisings, and Dedication Ceremonies are all around the corner - not to mention a few special events. You may want to get out your calendar as you read this issue of our e-news.
It's a Celebration Season!

We've got celebrations galore coming up! We hope you can join us to celebrate these milestones.

Volunteer Kick-Off

Christ Chapel, 1200 Old Stage Road, Centerville

Monday, September 15, 5:30pm

Want to know more about how volunteering works at Habitat? Attending a Volunteer Kick-Off is one of the best ways to learn all about a new Habitat project. At the Kick-Off, you'll meet the homeowners, the project leadership team, and other interested volunteers. Ask questions and learn how to get involved. Please do invite your friends who are new to our work. And here's a bonus: light refreshments will served.

Wall Raisings

There is something magical about a Wall Raising Day - the first volunteer day at a new Habitat construction site. Join us to watch the new walls go up (or lend a hand), and to see the joy on a soon-to-be homeowner's face as the tangible reality of their home begins to take shape. It is indeed a time to celebrate! We will raise and bless the walls, give thanks to those who helped make this dream come true, and share some refreshments together in community. Wall Raisings are open to the public - please invite your friends.

  • Orleans - Saturday, September 20, 8:30am, 10 Bevan Way, off of Namskaket Road
  • Barnstable - Saturday, September 27, 8:30am, Sesame Street, off of Oak Street (near Veritas Academy)

Orleans Dedication Ceremony

Monday, October 6, 5:30pm

12 and 14 Bevan Way, Orleans

off of Namskaket Road

Kim and Caitlin - as well as all the volunteers - have worked hard all winter, spring, and summer building these two homes. Now it is time to celebrate! We will bless the new homes as Caitlin, Kim, and their families prepare to move into the lovely Bevan Way neighborhood.

Happy Story

This summer, 32 kids at First Church Sandwich's Vacation Bible School participated in a wonderful program that included all the activities you would expect at VBS: singing, arts and crafts... hammering. Yes, as part of the curriculum, the kids made tool boxes and learned all about Habitat's work, and Habitat sure benefited from their work. Building supplies were collected and donated, beautiful cards were made for new homeowners, and sidewall shingles were painted, showcasing the children's compassion and talent. But what touched us most at the Habitat office was hearing that the children also learned about advocacy. The VBS children sent a letter to the Sandwich Board of Selectmen, supporting a Habitat build in Sandwich. The letter was signed by 75 children and adults in the congregation. We want these smart kids to know their letter made an impact, because it was circulated throughout town departments, and given the title, "Happy Letter." It sure made us happy - thank you, VBS!

Annual Meeting Report

It was a stunningly beautiful evening for our Annual Meeting in August. The room was transformed by a very efficient set-up crew and Marilyn Nouri, whose beautiful centerpieces and decorations were the center of attention - can you believe Marilyn grows all those flowers in her own yard? We are so grateful to Tony Shepley for hosting us our event at the Shepley Showcase. Ron Winner and the Shepley crew once again proved themselves masters of the grill, accompanied by delicious potluck appetizers, salads, and desserts from the entire Habitat family. And wasn't it lovely to see the children enjoying Trevor the Juggler's performance, and playing games together? This year, for the first time, we had a child care provider so that adults could enjoy the program while their children continued to play outside - a winning idea.

The theme for the evening was "Team Habitat." And what a team it was! Twelve people were honored with 10-year volunteer awards, and twenty-one individuals were honored as 20-year volunteers! In addition, our Golden Hammer Award was presented to Cape Cod Five for their years of support through the Cape Cod Five Charitable Foundation, for sponsoring our grant applications to the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston - Affordable Housing Program, for providing construction loan financing, and for participating as true partners in our initiatives. In presenting the award, Habitat Vice President, Nancy Smith, said, "Cape Cod Five demonstrates daily that they care about the communities they serve, and that they believe in and care about Habitat's mission."

The Habitat Partner Award went to the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Cape Cod (HBRACC), who, as sponsors of our Blitz Build home in the fall of 2013, showed a magnitude of generosity, energy, endurance, and commitment. In addition, this terrific partnership with HBRACC has brought Habitat many new friends in the building industry, strengthening our ability to serve the community.

Pat Taylor and Bill Witmer showing Habitat's Office Manger, Mary Campbell, the finer points of their fabulous kayak
Habitat of Cape Cod established a new award this year  in memory of Don Dickinson, who served as a Habitat volunteer in many capacities for 17 years. He served twice as our Board president, and was known throughout the Cape for his leadership and hard work in the area of land acquisition and project permitting. There are 75 Habitat homes built on land that was garnered during the time Don led our land acquisition program. The Donald S. Dickinson Habitat Ambassador Award will honor someone who, through their work over the past year, brings us new friends in the community to support our continuing work on Cape Cod. The first annual Donald S. Dickinson Habitat Ambassador Award went to longtime volunteers Pat Taylor and Bill Witmer, builders of the famous kayak which is raffled each year as a fundraiser. As Vicki Goldsmith said in presenting the award, Pat and Bill were being honored not because the kayak is such a successful fundraiser, but because "as they take their beautiful hand crafted kayak from town to town, up and down the Cape, for 6 or more months each year - they are bringing the Habitat message to thousands of people - as well as any one possibly could."

Some of our 20-year volunteer recipients: Helen Grogan (peeking in), Mary Jane McDonald (showing her 20-year hammer), and Lois Farmer
Habitat is indeed rich with volunteers, friends, and supporters - all part of the team, all contributing to the single goal of building homes, hope, lives, and community on Cape Cod.

Special thanks to our Annual Meeting crew:

-

Tony and Lorraine Shepley, Leah Fennel, Ron Winner & the Shepley BBQ Crew, John Howell, Marilyn Nouri, Betsy Giles, Robin Trainor, Jan McDermott, Joan Lapp, Deb Blakeman, Judy Keller, Mary Maraggio, Trevor the Juggler, Twinks Hastings, and our host, Shepley Wood Products.

Volunteer Spotlight

Below we are reprinting John Kaar's speech honoring Joanne Broderick, winner of this year's Everett Stoyle Spirit of Service Award. As House Leader, John has worked very closely with Joanne.

Ev Stoyle Spirit of Service Award: Joanne Broderick

by John Kaar

This year's recipient of the Ev Stoyle Spirit of Service award has been a Habitat Volunteer for only about six years. But in that short period of time she has had an incredible impact on the construction capacity and capability of this affiliate.

In the role she has taken on, it's safe to say that she has personally interacted with more volunteers over the past five years than anyone else in Habitat Cape Cod. Even when we make a generous estimate of numbers of continuing volunteers, we'd say that she has recruited, recorded, talked to, listened to, reminded, fed, enrolled, encouraged or enabled over 1000 individual volunteers over the past five years, which is the time that she has been Volunteer Coordinator for 19 Habitat homes.

Joanne...you already knew we're honoring Joanne Broderick, didn't you...Joanne works with the Construction Director, staff and house leaders to be sure that volunteers have a good sense of what will be happening at each site, each work day. She ensures that the skills necessary will be on board, reaching out to experienced workers if the volunteer list is "thin". She reminds the volunteers who have signed up that they are expected, and what they might need to bring. I recently discovered that for some of our regular volunteers, she even runs customized scheduling, along the lines of "sign me up for every Tuesday and Saturday unless I tell you I can't come." (Probably she'd rather not expand that service. Sorry Joanne.)

Joanne started volunteering at the Women Build in Brewster in 2008. And since taking on the coordinator responsibilities she has been a strong advocate for women volunteering in construction, on both Women Builds and our regular builds. She was a leader of the Steering Team for the current Bevan Way Women Build. And she is "walking the talk", routinely putting on her toolbelt and framing, hanging blueboard or painting, working many dozens of days per year as, she has become, an experienced construction volunteer.

At the build, Joanne famously does whatever job will move the project along. I don't recall her ever leading devotions, but I have seen her setting up for registration, running out for drinking water or morning break food, up on the scaffolding shingling walls, sweeping up, and breaking down the registration table, all on the same day...which then ends by her taking recycle to the Orleans Transfer Station. Watching her pace of work, some of the guys get so tired that they just have to go home early!

So, for everything that she does for our scores of volunteers, for Habitat Cape Cod leadership, and for the families we've housed, please join me in honoring the recipient of the 2014 Ev Stoyle Spirit of Service Award - Joanne Broderick.
