Last Gasp Bike Ride

Nearly 20 riders will participate in Last Gasp this year, making the 62-mile journey from Sandwich to Provincetown, to benefit Habitat. They've been training all summer, and now it is your turn to help: go to the Last Gasp donation page, be sure to check the circle for "Last Gasp," and then choose a rider to support from the drop-down menu. You can also make a donation at our Annual Meeting - look for donation bike helmets.

Construction Update

Orleans
Painting and flooring are complete and interior trim is underway at 12 and 14 Bevan Way, with kitchens soon to follow. At 16 and 19 Bevan Way, subcontractors are working on electric, plumbing, and insulation. Planning is underway to tear down the old farm house, where we expect to be able to raise walls this fall on what will be 10 Bevan Way. Work days at this site are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Falmouth
Painting is ongoing, along with a multitude of detail work, including decks, trim, stairs, and a frustrating stair rail, among other tasks. Coming up: Flooring. Work days at this site are Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Barnstable
Foundations have been poured and capped. We continue to work on infrastructure and plan to hold a September Wall Raising.

Harwich
We are in the early stages of permitting and laying down roads for a construction site that we expect to open to volunteers in the spring of 2015.

Aside from a few freak hailstorms, hasn't this been a glorious summer? No heat waves to speak of, some rain to keep the gardens occasionally watered, and have you noticed a decrease in the mosquito population? It's great weather for volunteering, so sign yourself up for a shift in either Orleans or Falmouth. We are working on interiors at both sites, and you can't beat the company - Habitat volunteers!
Congratulations to Falmouth Builds Together!

The Falmouth Builds Together Committee has been meeting since early 2013. They set themselves an ambitious goal - to raise $50,000 for Falmouth's Glenwood Avenue  construction project, plus $5,000 to go towards Habitat's tithe to Haiti. The group started with a Kick-Off event in June, 2013, where over 100 people came to learn about the Glenwood Avenue project. Falmouth Builds Together has worked together to rally the Falmouth Community to support the project.

This group has had original and innovative ideas from the start: they solicited local artists to paint beautiful shingles that were sold by the Falmouth Art Guild, held a (highly competitive) Bible Trivia contest, sponsored Three Legged Dog performing at a Coffee House, and this spring, petitioned selectmen to have April declared "Habitat Month" in Falmouth. Habitat Month events included fundraisers at Roche Brothers, Windfall Market, Stop and Shop, Friendly's, Falmouth Toyota, and the 99 Restaurant.

And now the group has succeeded in meeting their goal. Kudos to a hardworking committee: Rev. Patti Barrett (St. Barnabas), Jan Brooks (Habitat Faith Relations Committee), Wendy Cullinan (Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod), Rev. Jonathan Drury (First Congregational Church of Falmouth), Trisha Favulli (Habitat Board Member), Rev. Nell Fields (Waquoit Congregational Church), Betsy Giles (Habitat Family Partner), Bill Hough (Falmouth Enterprise), Rabbi Elias Lieberman (Falmouth Jewish Congregation), Brenda Swain (Falmouth Service Center), Suzanne Robbins, (Community Health Center of Cape Cod), Pamela Rothstein (Falmouth Jewish Congregation), and Jay Zavala (Falmouth Chamber of Commerce).

It is extremely gratifying to see a group of devoted community and faith leaders working together, and we are impressed with how successful this collaboration has been. Falmouth Builds Together is a model for other groups, and Habitat is lucky to have them on our team. Thanks to Falmouth Builds Together, more local families will have a decent home on Cape Cod.

RSVP for Annual Meeting

This is a friendly reminder to RSVP for our Annual Meeting on August 14th (see the events calendar at left). It is extremely helpful to our office team, Mary Campbell and Bri Blakeman (affectionately known as "Command Central") to have a head count of how many people will be attending.

At this year's Annual Meeting, we will be honoring not just 10-year volunteers, but - for the first time - 20-year volunteers! HHCC has 17 volunteers who have been with us for 20 years or more, and we think that is quite an accomplishment! We hope you will be able to join us on the 14th to see your friends honored for their impressive dedication and years of service.
Habitat Builds Community

This summer we've seen some wonderful community building at our construction sites. We've always known that Habitat builds community - it's right there in our mission statement! But here are two concrete examples - one from Cape Cod Conservatory and the other from the First Congregational Church of Falmouth.

Camp Summer Sounds

Cape Cod Conservatory's Summer Sounds Camp has done it again! As a gift to our volunteer construction crew, Summer Sounds students provided a lunch-time concert at our construction site at Bevan Way, Orleans. They also brought a delicious lunch, generously donated by Land Ho!, 38 Main Street, Orleans.

The crew loved their concert! Joanne Broderick remarked that it was "such a treat" to have a lunch time concert, and Mike DiRuzza felt it was "an extra opportunity for young artists to show their talents."

Volunteers Helping Volunteers

First Congregational Church of Falmouth's Summer of Service (SOS) is a week-long community-service-focused summer camp program for youth in grades 4-12. In SOS Camp, the youth volunteer their time at a variety of community organizations each morning. On July 29th and July 31st, part of that volunteering included bringing lunch to the Habitat crew at Glenwood Avenue. The Habitat volunteers loved their delicious lunches, and the young Summer of Service volunteers learned about Habitat's mission. And everyone made some new friends! Many thanks from Habitat to Rev. Jonathan Drury and his SOS campers!

Welcome Becky

We are pleased to welcome Rebecca Mendible to the Habitat office team as support to the Resource Development Department. Becky says she brings "a variety of 'tools' that I can now work with to support Habitat of Cape Cod." Wendy Cullinan, Director of Resource Development, is thrilled to have Becky on board: "Becky is a delightful addition to our happy office. She brings non-profit and event planning experience along with a real concern for those in need of a safe, decent place to live." Becky particularly enjoys working for non-profit organizations. With non-profits, she finds "the satisfaction of assisting and supporting other human beings is more fulfilling than contributing to someone's 'bottom line.'" Becky tells us, "I am thrilled to be part of this wonderful community!"
