Live Auction and Silent "Bust the Box" Auction
To kick-off The Last Gasp
Music by the Jeff Lowe Band
Admission: $25 per person, children (12 and under) are free and welcome! Includes 3 tickets that you can use for food, and a wide range of beverages. Additional tickets can be purchased for $5 each. There will also be salads, desserts and soft drinks available.  (More info here)

New this year, the "silent" auction will use the "Bust the Box" concept. You won't be putting your name on a sheet, but throwing as many opportunity drawing tickets into the container that represents the item you want to win. The more donations you make, the better chance you have of winning. Opportunity tickets are $5 each.

100% of all live and silent auction proceeds will be added to the Last Gasp account of the person, team, or beneficiary that provided the item. And one of those items, provided by Habitat's Leedara Zola, is truly fantastic:

Bid on a fun-filled and exciting all-day  Last Gasp Training Ride on Nantucket. Complete with ferry tickets (for people and bicycles - courtesy of our friends at Hy-Line Cruises) and a native guide who will meet you and 9 of your best training friends at the ferry dock. A full day of riding Nantucket's bike-paths, sight-seeing, a stop for lunch, and, of course, goodie bags. Habitat for Humanity has even convinced our Last Gasp Fearless Leader Bill Murphy to join, so this auction item comes with star power! Ride Date: September 6, with a rain date of September 7.

News In Brief

Thanks to volunteer Hank Henderson, the Habitat ReStore now has a brand new, stand-alone website. We hope you check it out and then stop by the store and let Hank know what you think. Thanks, Hank!

The Habitat Restore Facebook page now has over 1300 "likes," and is the best place to see updated photos of new merchandise as it arrives. You can even post a question if you see something that interests you. Get the latest ReStore news - including info on when they are having one of their infamous hot dogs days - by "liking" their Facebook page!

Best wishes to longtime Habitat volunteer and good friend, Gerry Loftus. Gerry is moving to Silver Springs Maryland to be closer to his son and daughter. We will miss you, Gerry!

Construction Update

Mashpee
Done! The homeowners have moved in. We will schedule a landscape day later this month.

Centerville
We have a Certificate of Occupancy! We are now working on the last punch list items, and have some landscaping to do. The closing will take place this month.

Orleans
Blueboard has started at 12 Bevan Way and will start very soon at 14 Bevan Way. At 16 and 19 Bevan Way, we are going to finish up some exterior work and complete the exterior trim before our volunteers make way for subcontractors to roof and wire and plumb and insulate. While all this is going on, we are also in the permitting stages to tear down the old farm house on the corner, and we expect to be able to raise walls this fall on what will be 10 Bevan Way. Work days at this site are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Falmouth
Sub-contractor work has started. Our volunteers are taking a break while the contractors complete their work, and we expect to get back inside to finish the interiors in several weeks. Once we get back inside, work days at this site will be Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Marstons Mills
Foundations have been poured and Bob Ryley is very busy orchestrating all the details that will lead to a September Wall Raising.

Award Categories

GOLDEN HAMMER AWARD, to recognize exceptional contributions from a business that furthers our work in building simple, decent homes in partnership with those in need.

HABITAT PARTNER AWARD, to honor one non-profit or public agency or Town to recognize exceptional contributions that further our work in building simple, decent homes in partnership with those in need.

EVERETT STOYLE SPIRIT OF SERVICE AWARD honors one volunteer who through his or her service with Habitat exemplifies the generosity of spirit and willingness to serve that we associate with Habitat. Thus far this has been given to honor volunteers who have given of themselves over a significant period of time. It is not given to a current board member (and has at times gone to a couple).

Our few rules: 1) Current Board members are not eligible for an award. 2) No one may receive an award more than once. 3) It is fine to nominate someone who has been nominated in the past.

Please note: the Board votes on the nominations, and the most important information that they will have about the nominee is the information that YOU send in. Please be sure to describe why you are nominating this person, agency, or business.

Haiti Update

Like many Habitat affiliates, we "tithe" 10% of our unrestricted income* to help build homes overseas. For several years now, our Board of Directors have voted to specify that 75% of our tithe to be used in Haiti, and the remaining 25% to be used "where most needed." Habitat International calculates the cost of a home in Haiti at $4500, and we are credited with building 104 homes since our tithe started in 1990. Here is an update from Habitat International about their work in Haiti, which we are proud to support:

One key focus of our work in Haiti is helping families in Simon-Pelé, a densely populated urban community in Port-au-Prince, to revitalize their neighborhood. This includes addressing housing needs as well as broader community priorities. We are also working to ensure that women are represented in all aspects of our work, both as members of our staff helping to implement our program and as residents of the community providing leadership and benefiting from the work that is underway.

Today, more than 21,000 families call the Northern Port-au-Prince Expansion Zone home. Soon after the 2010 Haiti earthquake, thousands of displaced families made their way to a vast open area on the northern outskirts of Port-au-Prince in hopes of starting a new life.  Driven by their determination, these families are fueling the growth of a new and vibrant urban community. However, it is rapidly developing without the benefit of a formal urban development plan, technical assistance or joint decision-making with local leaders. Habitat seeks to provide support, technical assistance, and training to define a community-wide and community-accepted vision.

The success of Habitat's work in Haiti depends on building strong partnerships with the communities and families we serve. Through these partnerships, bonds are forged, ideas are shared, and a common vision comes to life. At the heart of these partnerships are Habitat Haiti's community engagement coordinators - local staff members who have a keen understanding of the environment and the ability and sensitivity to interact with families living in extremely vulnerable situation. Without them, our bond with the families and the mutual trust that results would not be possible.

Habitat Haiti works to help families secure land, build or upgrade homes, reduce vulnerability to future disasters, promote their long-term health and well-being, and build back better and safer.

Here on Cape Cod, we can be proud to say that we have built 84 homes, with more under construction - and to also be able to say we have helped build 104 homes overseas, with many more to come. Learn more about Habitat's work in Haiti.

* Funds that are "unrestricted" do not include donations that are designated by the donor for a particular construction project.
Namskaket Video

Here's a great video, produced for Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, about our Bevan Way, Orleans project. You can see Vicki Goldsmith give a tour of the site, and meet some of the partner home purchasers.

A Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston (FHLBB) Grant was awarded to help fund these homes (including infrastructure - road and utility - costs), in the amount of $133,932. The Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank is sponsoring this grant and providing a construction loan for this project.

Last Gasp

Team Habitat is riding again! The Last Gasp is a 62-mile bike ride, a Cape Cod Bay cruise following the ride, and an authentic Cape Cod clambake to end the day. Habitat is pleased to once again be allied with a Cape Cod Charitable Funraisers Beneficiary, Cape Cod Young Professionals. CCYP receives 30% of Team Habitat's funds for their scholarship fund and 70% will go directly to Habitat. Last year, Team Habitat raised $7,000 for Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod. We know this year's team is going to do even better! There are several ways that you can help the team.

Want to ride? We are always looking for more riders! You can learn more about signing up as a rider at our Taco and Beer night at Sam Diegos in Hyannis - Wednesday, June 25th at 5:00pm. Riders, potential riders, friends - all are welcome - but please RSVP to office@habitatcapecod.org. At this information session, we will discuss signing up, training rides, fundraising, Summerfest, and growing the team. Please bring along anyone who wants to learn more.

Can't make the Taco and Beer info Session, but are still interested? Contact Dawn Walnut at dawn@habitatcapecod.org or 508-362-3559 x 16 for information on how to register.

Want to support the team financially? You can send a check made out to Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod with "Last Gasp" in the memo line, and we will distribute the funds equally between all our riders for their fundraising efforts. If you want to support an individual rider, you can choose their name from a drop-down menu at the Last Gasp Secure Donation Page. On this donation page, you must first check off the "Last Gasp" as your fundraiser, and then the drop down menu will appear. If you do not see the name of the rider you want to support in the drop-down menu, they probably have not yet registered - let them know!

Come to the Last Gasp Kick Off! Summerfest is the official Last Gasp Kick-off, with music, food, and auction items. For more about Summerfest, check out our calendar section at the top of this newsletter.
