Habitat has two Community Preservation Articles on the Warrant. One is for $35,000 to help with construction costs for a sixth home in our beautiful Bevan Way neighborhood. The other is to allow us to use funds from a previous award. Since we saved money on pre-development costs from that award, we would now like to use the remaining funds for construction.

News In Brief
We appreciate the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire Department for helping out at Ginger Lane recently. The COMM has become a good friend to Habitat and those guys know how to get things done around a job site. Thanks, COMM!
Falmouth Jewish Congregation's Beit Sefer (Religious School) has reached its fundraising goal and was able to donate $1,200 to Habitat for Humanity and Falmouth Builds Together. These funds (which are called tzedakah, righteous giving, from the Hebrew for justice/righteousness) were raised through a variety of ongoing and special activities since September. Falmouth Jewish Congregation's Beit Sefer is a community of 40 children, plus teachers, families and supporters within the congregation. Pamela Rothstein, FJC's Director of Lifelong Learning, told us, "I am so pleased to share this news and am proud of the school's efforts and understanding of the importance of Habitat's work and its build in Falmouth."
There is still time to see beautiful photographs by the multi-talented Lisa Bushy at Jo Mamas, 2740 Main St, Brewster. Lisa sits on the Habitat Board, is an essential member of our Events Committee (who remembers the wonderful tool-shaped chocolates she made for our 2012 Annual Meeting?), and is an all-around Habitat volunteer and friend. Proceeds from photo sales will be donated to Habitat.

Construction Update
Mashpee
We have a Certificate of Occupancy for 6 Park Place Way and Brenda should be closing shortly. We will schedule a landscape day for both #6 and #9 later this spring.
Exterior painting, hardware, punch list items, and cleaning are left to do before the Dedication Ceremony on May 4th. We will probably schedule a landscape day later this spring, after Kelly has moved into her home.
Orleans
Both 16 and 19 Bevan Way are framed with roof trusses up and sheathed. Strapping, foam insulation, and hurricane clips are ongoing. 12 and 14 Bevan Way will be ready for blueboard once the electric and inspections are complete. Workdays at this site are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Falmouth
If you have a chance, walk by the site on a non-construction day to see the sunny yellow clapboards that are now 75% complete. It won't be long before the site is ready for sub-contractor work. Here are some interesting facts about the work at this construction site, from House Leader Bob Leary:
"We installed 88 common rafters, 26 jack rafters, and 2 hip rafters - for a total of 116. We have 9 sets of stairs requiring 46 stair stringers and there are a total of 42 transitions of the clapboard siding. Transitions are corners and posts, inside and out, where the courses have to line up. This doesn't include transitions from one side of the windows and doors to the other.

Staff Transitions
Bri Blakeman has joined our team as Administrative Assistant. Bri grew up on the Cape and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology/Criminal Justice, with a minor in Political Science, from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Bri's administrative office experience includes working with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Blueboard Specialists Plastering and BI2 Technologies. During her internship with Tribune Broadcasting in Washington D.C., Bri was a Habitat for Humanity volunteer and more recently with our local affiliate, Buzzards Bay Area Habitat for Humanity. In addition to volunteering, Bri enjoys spending her time outdoors - at the beach, playing sports or hiking with her beagle Bubba.

Congratulations to Gerry Loftus!
| Gerry Loftus on the job |
Longtime Habitat friend and volunteer Gerry Loftus was honored on April 15th by the Harwich Board of Selectmen. Gerry was presented with a proclamation which read, in part: "The Harwich Board of Selectmen is proud to honor Gerry on his retirement from the numerous town committees and activities he has served for many years. We add our deep appreciation for his loyal and consistent service to the Town. But perhaps more importantly, we thank Gerry for the compassion and knowledge which he showed when advocating his positions and his respectful manner in chairing and contributing to committee and town discussions. We wish to recognize Gerry Loftus as a devoted citizen and friend of Harwich. We offer him our best wishes for a retirement that brings many years of good health, happiness and personal fulfillment. Gerry will be missed both professionally and as a friend by all those whose pleasure it has been to work with him over the past years."
Gerry's contributions to the Town are almost too numerous to list, but include chairing the Housing Committee, member of the Brooks Academy Museum Commission, member of the Citizens' Advisory Committee on the Comprehensive Wastewater Management Plan, Harwich's representative to the Barnstable County HOME Consortium Advisory Council, and much more.
Gerry's contributions to Habitat are equally impressive. He has been a core construction volunteer and part of the Charlie's Angels crew; a strong supporter of our local Habitat affiliate in many ways, including encouraging team participation from his church, Holy Trinity, in Harwich. We join with the Town of Hariwch in saying,
"THANK YOU, GERRY!"

A Wonderful Wall Raising
The 89th and 90th Habitat for Humanity homes on Cape Cod got off to a great start on April 5th. Shoshannah Dibble can boast that her walls may be the heaviest yet to be raised by Cape Cod Habitat crews. We even called in the Coast Guard! (Many thanks to Coast Guard Station Chatham and Coast Guard Station Provincetown - who sent eight crew members to help). At an estimated 1,200 pounds, those walls took some mighty pushing.
Walls were also raised at Kelly Lungo's house (also known as the Women Build), where the crew was noticeably joyous. The sole male volunteering with the women seemed to be having a wonderful time, but noted that there was one disadvantage in working with women - he complained that the site was so clean he couldn't find a tool lying around to grab when he needed it.
Here are a few photos of the day - we hope you enjoy them.

Volunteer Spotlight
 | Lee gets a chop saw lesson from Carolyn Kennedy |
Lee Cristofolo works for ADP Dealer Services, a company that provides technology services to vehicle dealers globally. Lee is a team leader in the call center. ADP promotes social responsibility and donates eight hours for each associate each year for their volunteer work. Lee feels that this is a "wonderful opportunity for associates worldwide to get involved with their communities."
After seeing flyers posted for Habitat's Women Build, Lee decided to use some of her community service working on the project. "What captured my eye was the logo with the flower and a hammer and the words 'Women Build.' I took the flyer home and I felt drawn to the idea." Lee decided to attend a project overview learning session, which was led by the Women Build Steering Committee under the capable leadership of longtime Habitat volunteer Carolyn Kennedy. After the session, Lee says she was hooked. And when she heard the Women Build would start with a blitz week, she knew she was "in" - not just for a day, but for the whole week.
Lee actually took a vacation week from work to volunteer for the whole thing. "Woman Build was particularly appealing to me because I did not feel intimidated if I missed the nail, if it was going to take 8 hits or 35 hits. We were all in it together and with the team leaders behind us - helping, assisting, leading, I felt positive, confident, and supported in my efforts."
Raising walls on the home during the first day was a highlight of the week for Lee. She said, "I felt like a superhero - I felt pumped - doing the right thing in the right place for the right person with the right team."
Lee got to work alongside Kelly Lungo, who will put in 250 hours of sweat equity as part of her purchase agreement to own the house. For Lee, this was also a valuable part of the experience. "Hearing her excitement made me feel regenerated during my days, and also made me very thankful for all I have. I am glad for what I can offer and leave for Kelly and her son in this home for years to come."
At the end of the week, Lee says she found the volunteer experience to be rewarding, inspiring, challenging, and refreshing. One of the things she'd been telling herself for years was "I wish I could do that," turned into an experience that she feels gave her social interaction and new skills she would not have learned otherwise. Despite the challenges, or perhaps because of them, Lee says she came away feeling more confident that "I can handle any project and challenging work."
Lee wants anyone out there who is thinking of volunteering at a Habitat build site to give it a try. "Don't question yourself -you can do it!! There's so much support, and feeling of family, and community there. It was an awesome feeling and an experience everyone should have! Thank you Habitat for Humanity - Women Build!!"
Take Lee's advice and try it! Join the Women Build or work on one of our other homes. Contact Dawn Walnut, Volunteer Services Manager, at dawn@habitatcapecod.org or 508-362-3559 x. 16 to get started.
