News In Brief
Helping Hammers Going Strong!
The Helping Hammers crew are getting to be experts at small home repair work. Here is their most recent accomplishment, a handicap ramp, which they built this July in Hyannis. Posing on the completed ramp, with the homeowner, are Fred Dempsey, Gary Kirchgessener, Dick Roberts, and D.J. Sullivan. Any funds raised by Helping Hammers goes to help fund Habitat's disaster relief trips each spring. Members of the Helping Hammers crew are: Frank Almeida, Dan Bermingham, Fred Dempsey, Dave Hegner, Dick Roberts, Ralph Specht, DJ Sullivan, Howard Taubner, Fred Thimme, and Fred Yarger.
Cheers and Kudos
Thanks to the Falmouth Builds Together Committee for the fund-raising and awareness-raising they have been doing during the Falmouth Road Race. Hats off to a hard-working team!
Peter's House Update
Peter's House, the group home for adults with developmental delays that several Habitat volunteers helped shingle this spring, is nearly complete. Move-in day is scheduled for August 23rd.

Construction Update
Truro
This build is complete and Melissa moved in on August 3!
Mashpee
Windows and doors are in at #9 and the house is currently getting roofed and shingled. Over at #6, the roof trusses have been set and sheathed, and windows and doors are about to be put in. This summer, we have welcomed groups from Cotuit Federated Church, The St. James Youth Group, and the Unitarian Universalist Meetinghouse of Falmouth.

Centerville
Walls have been raised! We will continue building the exterior front and the interior walls in the coming weeks, and then start on roof work.
Orleans
Foundation permits have been secured for this site, and trees will soon be removed in preparation for excavation work, and then foundations. We anticipate volunteers will be working on the site this fall. The Blitz Build will take place the week of September 23rd.
Falmouth
We expect the town will soon begin work on the water main needed on Glenwood Avenue, and we anticipate a Wall Raising in mid-September. |

The Finished Garden
The Cape Cod Veteran's Garden was built in a one-day blitz on July 23rd at the Barnstable County Fair by community volunteers, led by Cape Cod's own Chris Lambton, 'runner up' of The Bachelorette and current host of H&G TV's Going Yard.
The space for the garden was donated by the Board of Directors of the Barnstable County Agricultural Society and is located inside the main entrance to the Cape Cod Fairgrounds in Falmouth. The garden is not a memorial, but was built to recognize and appreciate all the men and women of our armed services. It will be used by community groups as they celebrate the happiness and freedoms protected by our veterans.
Four Habitat volunteers were among those who helped put the garden together: Frank Almeida, Sue Ernst, Bob Leary, and Natalie Tudor. According to Rick Sawyer, Habitat Board member and Garden Build Organizer, "The building of the garden, which included a pergola, picnic table, and sitting bench, would not have gone as smoothly without the help of the Habitat volunteers who strapped on their toolbelts and got to work early on the morning with "will do" and "can do" attitudes.
Next time you are at the fairgrounds, we hope you will stop by to enjoy this beautiful and lovely space.

Team Habitat riders are in training, and some of them are sore! How can you thank them for their tremendous effort? Donate! At the Cape Cod Charitable Fundraisers Donate page here, you can check off "Last Gasp" to get a drop-down menu of names. You can donate on behalf of a specific individual by checking their name, filling in a dollar amount, and then adding your donation to the shopping cart. Remember, 70% of the funds raised will go to support our Women Build house in Orleans, starting this October. The other 30% of your contribution will be used by our Last Gasp allies, CCYP, to support their scholarship fund.
Team Habitat members are: Dave Akin, Frank Almeida, Christine Claireaux, Sue Ernst, Judy Fenner, Diane Goldsmith, Vicki Goldsmith, Gail Holland, and Leedara Zola.
Another way to support the team is to come out to cheer them on! Check out the ride route here and come out to support Team Habitat! Creative signs are welcome. The Last Gasp September 15, 2013 Sandwich Marina to McMillan Wharf in Provincetown 8:00am-2:00pm |
Thanks to Summer Sounds Camp
Our most heartfelt thanks to students of Summer Sounds Camp - a program of Cape Cod Conservatory at both their Falmouth and Barnstable campuses.
Designed for students entering grades 6 -12 with at least two years instrument or voice experience, Summer Sounds musicians learn about their instruments, fine tune their music reading skills and increase their technical abilities. And, on July 7th and July 30th, they also learned about performing an outdoor concert - by playing for Habitat volunteers in Mashpee during their lunch. In addition, the Summer Sounds students served boxed lunches to the crew.
"This provides the perfect opportunity for the students to witness community volunteering first-hand and have the opportunity to perform in public at the same time," said Cape Cod Conservatory Managing Director, Stephanie Weaver. Vicki Goldsmith, Habitat's Exectutive Director, said, "This is a most generous and gracious gift to our hard-working construction volunteers - we are appreciative of the students for both their talents and their desire to give back to their community."
And the crews certainly enjoyed the shows! As longtime volunteer Bill Page told the performers, "I have been a Habitat volunteer for eighteen years, and this is the first time anyone had ever performed music at lunch."

Volunteer Spotlight
This Sunday, 15 people will recieve their ten year volunteer hats. That's a lot of volunteering! We asked a few of these folks, who have each dedicated ten years of service to Habitat, to tell us why they choose to "help build it."
Bob and Gini Casey help build it because, as Gini put it, "I truly believe this is the Lord's work." Jimmy Dishner says working with Habitat is the one thing he always wanted to do after he retired from the military. "You get to help people, but they work for it, and they pay for it. I feel very strongly about the fact that it's a decent thing for people to do for others." Bob Harding helps build it because of the "cameraderie with the group of men I've worked with over the years, and I like to help these young people get on their feet." Gerry Loftus says, "I look on my job site involvement over the last ten years as 'Pay Back.' I have been very fortunate in my lifetime to have been able to give my family a home and I want to help others achieve the same goal." Mary Scanlan helps build it "because of the great need for housing for low income people." And the inimitable Perry White tells us he has helped build it for ten years "so I can get my hat!"
You can see Perry and other ten-year volunteers receive their hats at the annual meeting on August 18th.
Additional ten-year volunteers are: Larry Drago, Sue Ernst, Barb and Rob Leiden, Allen Mears, Varnum Philbrook, Ira Seldin, and Russ Stockwell.
