News In Brief
Meet Laura Pereira,
Summer Intern
Laura will be interning in the Resource Development Department here at Habitat this summer, commuting back and forth between here and Cambridge, where she has a part-time job for an organization that provides scholarships for Brazilians to pursue doctoral studies in the United States. She is entering her senior year at Harvard University, majoring in International Relations. Originally from Brazil, she and her family have lived on Cape Cod since she was nine yers old. She loves Cape Cod, and feels that it is her home. She finds working at a non-profit to be very interesting, and says she especially enjoys working with the financial aspects of a company - "making sure everything balances and keeping things running." Laura hopes someday to work for a company that has a presence in mulitple nations, but admits that, because she's reluctant to leave Cape Cod, she's not sure how she's going to make that work!
Elias McQuaid,
Restore Associate
Ask Elias, our new ReStore Associate, to describe his job and he is quick to answer, "a lot of whatever needs to be done." As growth at the ReStore continues at a rapid pace, new staff positions have become increasingly necessary to handle the volume of sales. This summer, Elias is a welcome addition. Often you will find him loading (or unloading) items from truck to workshop, workshop to sales floor, or sales floor to people's cars. At other times he might be repairing furniture, sorting items, pricing, polishing and cleaning merchandise, or just "helping out anyone who has projects." Elias has a undergrad degree from Syracuse University in psychology, and will be starting a three-year Master's program in school psychology at Worcester State this September. He hopes to someday work in an elementary or middle school as a school psychologist. This summer, you will find him at the ReStore - a great place to work, according to Elias, "because almost everyone is a volunteer so they want to be there - everyone is positive and happy about the ReStore."

Welcome New Habitat Staff Members
We are pleased to introduce Mary Campbell as our new full time Office Manager. Mary brings years of professional background in office and property management, as well as experience in human resources, public relations & marketing. Aside from "managing the office" (responsible for a myriad of financial, mortgage payment, insurance and other operational details), Mary will provide administrative support to the Executive Director and most of our program staff and committees (such as construction, land acquisition, partnership, family selection).
Mary says she is "looking forward to becoming a part of the Habitat family, although I know Anne will be a tough act to follow!" She enjoys the fact that she is helping families invest in a brighter future. An experienced marathon runner (she has completed eleven!) we are thrilled that she has decided to devote her great energy, positive spirit and talents to furthering the work of Habitat for Humanity. She, her husband Bill, and son, Dylan reside in Yarmouthport.

Fred Thimme in New Jersey working to restore a home affected by Superstorm Sandy |
Our newest 4-day/week ReStore Associate, longtime volunteer Fred Thimme needs little introduction. Fred has been a core construction volunteer for many years, active with Helping Hammers and a participant and co-leader of several Disaster Relief Trips. As well, he has recently served on our Board of Directors, resigning to accept this position. Fred has been a passionate participant in the ReStore from the beginning: helping with pick-ups, construction, sales, serving on the Advisory Committee, generating budgets, and cash flow analyses. Aside from his ability and willingness to take on whatever task is needed to keep ReStore operations flowing smoothly, Fred brings his decades of experience in corporate marketing management - and a passion for making our ReStore one of the top ReStores in the U.S.
Fred says, "After building Habitat houses for ten years, I wanted a meaningful change. This position lets me apply decades of retail and financial experience, work with motivated volunteers and friendly customers, while continuing to provide a major benefit to Habitat." Fred lives with his wife and daughter in Marstons Mills.
Please see introduction to our intern and summer staff person in the column on the left. |

Award Categories
GOLDEN HAMMER AWARD, to recognize exceptional contributions from a business that furthers our work in building simple decent homes in partnership with those in need.
HABITAT PARTNER AWARD, to honor one non-profit or public agency or Town to recognize exceptional contributions that further our work in building simple decent homes in partnership with those in need.
EVERETT STOYLE SPIRIT OF SERVICE AWARD honors one volunteer who through his or her service with Habitat exemplifies the generosity of spirit and willingness to serve that we associate with Habitat. Thus far this has been given to honor volunteers who have given of themselves over a significant period of time. It is not given to a current board member (and has at times gone to a couple).
Our few rules: 1) Current Board members are not eligible for an award. 2) No one may receive an award more than once. 3) It is fine to nominate someone who has been nominated in the past.
Please note: the Board votes on the nominations, and the most important information that they will have about the nominee is the information that YOU send in. Please be sure to describe why you are nominating this person, agency, or business.

Volunteer Spotlight
Glen Rhodes has volunteered with Habitat three times now. Once at our Russell Road site, twice at Park Place Way. Glen met Mary Scanlon at a political event last fall, and she encouraged him to attend meetings of the "Upper Cape Chapter" - held on the first Monday of the month for anyone interested in leaning about Habitat's Cape Cod affiliate and its activities. From those meetings, Glen learned about the current builds and started to sign up for shifts.
What's it like to start volunteering for the first time when you don't know anyone? Glen admits that it is a little intimidating. But he says that the crews were very welcoming to him and he has seen them tell newcomers to "C'mon, get in here!" and then make room for them. Glen himself was able to help one of the new homeowners, who has not done a great deal of construction herself, to feel more comfortable on the site and he very much enjoyed that. Glen has done construction work and done work in his own house - putting up and taking down walls - since his high school days so his advice to her was, "If it's made out of wood, it can be fixed. You can't hurt it." Glen says that anyone new to volunteering at a build site should remember that everyone there was once new themselves, and is "more than willing to help you."
Glen's background is in sales, delivery, and customer service, mostly in the food business. His delivery job paid well, but the hours were long and he saw his co-workers needing surgery on a regular basis. So he made a decision to get his degree in business. He and his family moved here to Cape Cod two years ago when his wife, a nurse with the Indian Health Service, got a job working with the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. Glen has been looking for a job on the Cape and likes to volunteer to "get out and meet people and to continue to learn new things." At Habitat, Glen says, "I do anything that helps out - swinging a hammer, moving lumber around, using a saw, cleaning up, anything that's needed."
Glen says a great aspect of working with Habitat is that "I enjoy the people. That's a big part of it. They are warm and welcoming. Then there's the aspect of 'I'm helping a family.' What really sticks out in my mind is when I was at the Kick-Off and saw the look in the homeowners' faces. They had a look of gratitude that you just can't explain. I'm sure that the words 'thank you' don't express how they feel. And then I get to meet the families and work alongside them. Giving back is wonderful."
