A Tribute to Anne Corrieri
It has been my privilege, these past ten years, to have Anne Corrieri as part of my life each and every work day here at the Habitat office. As our Office Manager, Anne has made sure that every caller, every "walk-in," every donor, applicant, volunteer, or staff member has been greeted - not only with a warm welcome, but with genuine interest in their question or concern. As well, on our behalf, she kept this office on an even keel, handling a high volume of diverse responsibilities with great judgment and proficiency.
I expect that I am not the only one who feels they are losing a good friend, confidante, wise advisor, fabulous colleague, and teammate.
But how wonderful for Anne that she can now make this life-changing leap into retirement! And so, on behalf of Habitat for Humanity, I offer my closest colleague of these past ten years our heartfelt wishes that she will enjoy and celebrate each new day. Thank you, Anne, for all that you contributed to our accomplishments, and for making each day we spent with you a better day.

Home Builders Blitz!
A "Blitz Build" is a dizzying experience. In most cases, a blitz takes place over the course of one week and that is exactly what we are planning here on Cape Cod in September - a Habitat home that will go from Wall Raising to Certificate of Occupancy in just one short week.
Nationally, Habitat for Humanity affiliates have been partnering with professional homebuilders to create Home Builders Blitz events since 2006. Habitat for Humanity International describes Home Builders Blitz partnerships in this way: Local professional builders and Habitat for Humanity affiliates work closely to organize all aspects of building. This includes securing subcontractors and suppliers, fundraising, and seeking donations of materials. With the help of local building professionals in communities across the U.S., the Home Builders Blitz program supports Habitat's vision of "a world where everyone has a decent place to live."
Our local partnership is with The Homebuilders and Remodelers Association of Cape Cod (HB&RACC). Teams of professional builders, in a tightly coordinated schedule, will coordinate Blitz 2013 in Orleans the week of September 23rd. They are arranging for professional builders to volunteer on the site, and are also committed to fully funding the build by soliciting donated materials and supplies, and raising funds for any remaining needs. In a year when we are starting ten new homes - more starts than we have attempted in a single year before - our Home Builders Blitz partnership will allow us to rise to meet this capacity. As a short term benefit, we can serve one more family in 2013 than we might be able to serve otherwise.
In the long term, we hope to sustain many of the new relationships we're discovering through this project. We've always benefited from the commitment of those in the building trades who have believed in our mission and shown us support - either through outright donations or Habitat-friendly prices. But, considering how many builders there are on Cape Cod, there is room for more of these partnerships. It is our hope that we can partner in more Blitz builds in the future and that these new partnerships will remain healthy and vigorous.
One of the great benefits we've found in partnering with HB&RACC is in the new knowledge and great synergy that they brings to us. HB&RACC is a great organization that has always supported many charitable organizations, and we want to shine a little spotlight on the work that they do. Check out their website here.

Volunteer Spotlight
Kevin Maloney likes volunteering with Habitat so much he retired so he could have more volunteer time. Actually, Kevin says he'd always been a little nervous about retiring before he found Habitat. "I always worried about how I'd fill my time if I retired. And when we are between houses at Habitat, I do go a little buggy, honestly." Kevin's neighbor, Barry Clickstein, introduced him to Habitat, and he loved it from the start.
Kevin was in the Information Technology field, working at a variety of retail stores in the Boston area, before becoming an independent consultant. One of his last consulting jobs was with Stop and Shop, doing data security. He also spent some time as a part-time Office Manage for the Samaritans. But in all his years working, he says, he's never felt the type of cameraderie and friendship he finds on a Habitat site. "There's four or five of us - it's hard for us to go a week without seeing each other. That's the kind of thing I'd never experienced in corporate America."
The cameraderie is just one of the reasons Kevin helps build. He also likes learning new skills. When Kevin first started volunteering, he says he wasn't that great a carpenter, but if someone needed a particular tool, he'd know what to hand them. Now he says he can do all general carpentry, starting with the foundation and capping, and "I'll do everything else except for the roof. Although now that we're doing a lot of ranch houses, you could probably get me up there - but it wouldn't look pretty." Kevin says he enjoys hard work. "At the end of the day, I take a couple of ibuprofin and sit back. It's good exercise. And I like the gratification of seeing the end product and knowing I helped get it there."
Habitat's mission is also important to Kevin. He enjoys meeting the families he is working alongside, and says that is "one more feel-good experience." He especially recalls the first home dedication he ever atended. "I was shocked - and I don't think I was the only one - at how emotional that was."
New volunteers, Kevin says, should "give it a little time to find a niche - a certain type of work, or a geography, or a group of people." Kevin recalls a work day when his grandson volunteered at the Mashpee build. "He really enjoyed it and I was a very proud grandfather that day. Now he asks me how the guys he met are doing. It's like Cheers - a place where everybody knows your name."
