News In Brief
Last Gasp Fundraiser
Enjoy biking? Then have we got an opportunity for you! We are gathering a Habitat for Humanity team to participate in Last Gasp 2013 to raise funds to help sponsor this year's WomenBuild house in Orleans. The day consists of a 62 mile bike ride, a Cape Cod Bay cruise following the ride, and an authentic Cape Cod clambake to end the day. Riders need to commit to raising at least $500 in donations for their ride, gathering contributions from friends, family, colleagues, and others. Men as well as women are definitely welcome on the team, of course! Contact Dawn Walnut ( dawn@habitatcapecod.org or 508-362-3559 ex. 16) with your name and contact information to let us know you are interested. Instructions on how to register are coming in our next e-newsletter - please wait until then to officially register as a Last Gasp rider. We are thrilled to be entering Last Gasp as an "ally" to cape Cod Young Professionals. Be part of the team. We are going to raise a LOT of money for Habitat - and have a great time training and riding together. .

Construction Update
Eastham We are now focusing on interior finish work on house number 2, with house number 1 mostly complete. The Dedication ceremony is scheduled for March 3rd, and the last day for volunteers is scheduled for March 9th.
Mashpee
The floors have been installed and we are hanging doors and working on trim. Next will be cabinets and countertops. We still expect to finish volunteer work in late March, and dedicating home in early April.
Truro
The winter weather has not been helpful to us in re-opening this build. We have had to cancel two Monday build days. A wonderful crew from the Truro Police Department helped us install blueboard on the ceilings, and we will have a crew from the coast guard helping install blueboard this week. Then the house will close to volunteers during the plastering stage.

Falmouth, Centerville, Mashpee, OrleansSite clearing has begun in Orleans, and all of these sites are in various stages of infrastructure work and permitting. The precise start dates are a moving target right now. If all goes well, Wall Raisings on these ten homes will start in May and continue through October. Our Orleans Blitz Build, a home that will be built by the Homebuilders Association of Cape Cod in just one week, is scheduled to start September 23rd.

Greetings!
In this e-newsletter we are highlighting a few different ways to participate in the Habitat mission - breakfasts, trips, bike teams. And it is time for another home dedication - this time we dedicate two homes in Eastham! We do hope you can join us as we bless these homes. Seeing the home to fruition and getting it ready for move-in day is one of our greatest joys. Whether you pounded nails, brought a snack, sat on a committee that oversaw some aspect of this house, helped with our fundraising efforts, kept us in your prayers, or cheered us on from the sidelines as you read about our work in the newsletter, we think of you as a part of these homes.

Disaster Relief Trip Coming This Spring
 | Trip to Monson 2011 |
Tentative plans are underway for a possible trip to the NY/NJ area to help with relief efforts after the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy. At this point we are looking to find out how many people would be interested in such a trip, as plans are in their preliminary stages.
Fred Yarger is currently looking into different potential partner groups, and thinking of a trip in early May, for not more than one week. Whatever group we work with, we hope to be doing re-building, but Fred cautions that the situation at the site will require flexibility - we may find that mucking and sheetrock removal is what is most needed.
If you are interested, please let us know! Contact both Fred Yarger to get on his mailing list for updates, and Dawn Walnut at the Habitat office to get into our Disaster Relief database.

Volunteer Spotlight
 | Jimmy Dishner, Nat Goddard, Roger Arbo, and Sue Baker serving French Toast at Dennis Union Church |
Jimmy Dishner is a Habitat Renaissance Man. His volunteering has encompassed construction, devotions, disaster relief, rehab on the ReStore, committee work, caretaking of our properties on Namskaket Road in Orleans, helping do pick-ups for the ReStore, and those who know him well will tell you that no one else can make French Toast for our Church Breakfasts the way he can.
Jimmy retired from a career in the military in 2003. He had heard about Habitat's work and done some research on the organization, and he told himself that when he retired, he would look to see if there was a Cape Cod affiliate. He started with us here on Cape Cod with the Danvers Way project in Hyannis (2003-2005), and also worked on Gomes Way in Harwich (2009). He says he did anything they asked him to do - starting with roofing. He also got involved with the Church Relations Committee and chaired that committee in 2005 and 2006. "That's how I got into the devotions side of things," he explains. Although he no longer sits on the committee, they continue to ask him to help with devotions and special projects - especially the annual Church Breakfasts, where he is the go-to man for French Toast.
Jimmy likes to tell the story of the time he hit his thumb with a hammer while on a disaster relief trip to Mississippi. He says the whole thumb got black and they actually had to puncture the nail to take the pressure off. But, like other volunteers, he never felt the need to complain. "I've never heard anyone complain," he says, "No one goes home and says, "I've got to put ligament on my back. No one ever says it's a burden. Because it's not a burden - it's a privilege."
Jimmy loves the "wonderful feeling I get in helping others. It's such a satisfying thing. There's never a dry eye in the house when you hand the key over to a new homeowner at the dedication ceremony. You're helping others to grow and putting a roof over their heads - it helps me grow. And you feel like you are a part of that house."
Jimmy wants new volunteers to know that the value of the work they do is inestimable. "It changes lives forever - it's not just a one-time event. Every time the homeowner walks into that house they are going to know whence the house came and remember the volunteers. No matter who you are or where you are in life's journey, you can make a difference."
