Welcome to our New ReStoreAssociate, Roe Osborn Welcome Roe Osborn, ReStore Associate. At the end of December we were pleased to add Roe Osborn to our ReStore staff, 3 days/week. ReStore Associate means Roe will be working in every aspect of the store's operations, depending on the hour, the day, the week - assisting customers with their questions or helping to load up their purchase, organizing how merchandise is displayed, picking up donations, ringing up sales, and acting as floor manager when needed.
A Harwich resident, Roe brings to us a great background in the building trades as a carpenter, boat builder and contractor; he really knows our product. This background, along with an interest in writing and photography led Roe to an editorial position at Fine Homebuilding magazine, a job he held for 11 years. Roe brings a wide variety of skills to his new job, as well as a passion for our mission, and enthusiasm for helping the ReStore succeed. As a self-proclaimed 'people person,' Roe also wants to help make ReStore a fun place to shop. Roe says, ""My first ReStore experience was more than 10 years ago on the Oregon coast, and I've been excited about the concept ever since. I was jazzed to learn that the Cape was getting its own ReStore, and I'm thrilled to be a part of the Cape ReStore team!"
As a volunteer, Roe has swung a hammer in other parts of the country for Habitat. For our affiliate, he shot and donated the aerial photos of Gomes Way, and more recently he wrote a jingle for the ReStore that you will be hearing on radio stations this spring (Roe does the double bass and vocal, with Brewster resident, Bert Jackson on guitar and second vocal). The jingle was produced so that a narrative voice-over can be added to the middle section and revised whenever needed, and so that commercial length can be 15, 30 or 60 seconds. Check out a preview of the jingle here.
Roe's part time ReStore hours work out as a great complement to Roe's multi-faceted livelihoods: musician, sculptor, photographer, and writer. You can find out even more about Roe at his websites, roeosbornphoto.com, and capecodcreative.com. And you may also want to check out his two books, Framing a House and Finishing a House (Taunton Press) . We are very lucky to have the multi-talented Roe joining Team ReStore!

Volunteer Spotlight
Jen Avery has been a Habitat volunteer since 2006, when she got involved in our Women Build at Middle Road in South Chatham. She also worked on the Women Build house on James Burr Road in Brewster. Jen really enjoyed the work and especially the idea of helping to improve the lives of neighbors. She remembers how great it felt to see sidewall shingles go up to cover a significant section of the house, and knowing that she had - with her friends - helped make that happen. At the end of the day, she says, "We were tired and sore, but it felt great!" But Jen works full-time as a physical therapist for Spaulding Cape Cod in Orleans. Add to that the scheduling needs of her two teenage children, and Jen found it was difficult for her to take time off for more builds. But she has found another, unique, way to donate time to Habitat. She attends the monthly Board meetings and takes notes during the meeting. These notes are sent to the Board's Clerk for review and then are presented to the full Board for approval. Jen finds this work to be gratifying and Habitat benefits from her attention to detail and ability to summarize the most important information. Jen says, "Being able to help with the Board meetings is a good way for me to balance being able to be a part of Habitat and getting our kids to and from their activities. The thing that motivates me to stay is that I see how much good HfH does, and how caring and hard-working the Board members are, and it makes me want to continue to be a small part of that." Jen sees her part as small, but we do not. Vicki Goldsmith says, " It is very hard to participate fully in a meeting and take notes at the same time. When Joanne Smith (who was a great clerk and board member) left the Board we found that the "Clerk" job was a hard spot to fill until we came up with the idea of splitting off the drafting of the minutes as a separate volunteer job - still needing to be reviewed by the Board's elected Clerk (currently David King). Jen has been incredibly loyal to this responsibility, consistently dedicating a high level of care and attention." Most people think of volunteering with Habitat for Humanity as a job swinging a hammer. And Jen Avery certainly can do that. But as Jen shows, there are plenty of other ways to volunteer. Habitat has a volunteer opportunity for everyone! Contact Dawn Walnut at dawn@habitatcapecod.org or 508-362-3559, ex. 16 to discuss the variety of volunteer jobs that are available, and how your particular skills and interests can shine here.
