Greetings!

At Habitat, we do more than build houses - we also build community. You are a part of that community, and without you, we could not be here. We thank you, and during this season of gratitude, we want you to know that we are grateful to you.

"Foundations don't just support the homes to be built. They support the families that live in them. They support the neighborhood these families  create. They support the community these families live and work in"

Recently we mailed you an important letter - our 2012 Holiday Appeal.

I hope you will open this letter right away and respond. Your financial support will allow us to continue our work -- giving local families in need the opportunity to help build their own home alongside community volunteers - and then purchase it on terms they can afford to pay with their Cape Cod wages. Click here to learn how you can help Habitat Cape Cod this season by making a year-end gift.

Five years ago, Patty Moynihan, a working mother of three teenagers, took an important step towards securing a better life for her family. She shares some of her story here...

If you have already made your year-end donation to Habitat- we thank you! If not, please help us help more families who are in desperate need of safe, decent, affordable housing on Cape Cod.  With your financial support, we will be able to help more families like Patty's.

As the New Year begins, we are completing homes in Bourne, Eastham, Mashpee and Truro and reviewing applications from families for homes in Mashpee and Falmouth and completing permitting work for 5 homes in Orleans.

As always, more qualified families will apply to us for homes as we are able to help in one year. Please help us build more homes to meet this rising need.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year!

Vicki

 VolunteerVolunteer Spotlight

For those of you who missed our article on Dave Kaczmarczyk that appeared in the Annual Report, we are reprinting it here.

Dave Kaczmarczyk is the House Leader for 24 Russell Road in Mashpee. He is honored to be in this new leadership role and remembers back to his first build in Osterville in 2001, where Bob Ryley first showed him how to build corner boards. "I fondly recall putting on cedar shingles in freezing weather, snow and ice on the scaffold planks. That was the start - I was hooked." For Dave, one reason to volunteer has been to learn new skills. A software engineer by profession, he enjoys building things. The skills he's learned at Habitat have given him "courage to take on projects around my house." But Dave says he probably would not have stayed on as a volunteer if it were not for the very real, tangible difference he can see he's making in people's lives. Dave particularly remembers this story, related by one of our family partners: Before getting a Habitat home, her family was used to the Cape winter rental market, and always had to move each and every summer. The spring after her family moved into their Habitat home, she found her three children matter-of-factly fetching suitcases to pack their clothes and toys. Summer was near, they said, time to move. She joyfully explained to them that this house belonged to them and they wouldn't have to move again. Dave says that this story "really hit home" for him, and he has never forgotten it.

The work became personal for Dave last year after the tornado that struck western Massachusetts. Dave grew up in that area, and learned of the destruction firsthand from his brother. "Thankfully Habitat and the Northside Methodist Church mounted a disaster relief trip to go out there and do whatever was needed. We had a great group on that trip and then again this June when we were out there helping the Springfield Habitat blitz build." There is another reason Dave enjoys his time volunteering with Habitat: the great group of people he gets to work with. He says he really looks forward to seeing those people each week. "It is an interesting mix of people, a very diverse group, with people who cross the political spectrum and the socioeconomic spectrum. But it doesn't matter where you are in life when you build; everyone is just doing what needs to be done."

By the way, just in case you were wondering: Dave's last name is pronounced: "Kaz mar zick."
Correction

There was a small error in the Director's Note sent out last week. The address we are building at in Falmouth in 2013 is #55.
