News In Brief

Congratulations to the winner of our kayak, Simon Wall. You can read more about our kayak raffle here.

The Town of Truro supported our build at Yellow Brick Road on October 16th in a new way -  town employees were invited to participate in our build instead of their regular work day. Town selectmen voted to approve this work day, and eleven people decided to participate. Read about this unique partnership here in the Cape Cod Times - and our thanks to the Town of Truro!

We celebrated at 13 Yellow Brick Road, Truro on October 20th with a house blessing led by Rev. Jim Cox  and with speakers who shared what this build means to them - including the immediate neighbors.

Many thanks to the Cape Cod Corvette Club for participating in a team day on October 13th in Eastham. These volunteers helped install blueboard at Sandy Meadow Way, and also presented Habitat with a generous donation.

Annual Meeting Report

What a wonderful night it was! Our Annual Meeting on October 17 was held at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod  for the first time this year, where we were surrounded by children's art depicting "What Does Home Mean to Me?" Thanks to the generosity of Shepley Wood Products, we had a wonderful main course dinner. Salads and desserts were provided by our talented volunteers and supporters. And here's an extra shout-out of thanks to Lisa Bushy and Barbara Bodansky, who created chocolate hammers, pliers, wrenches, and screwdrivers as party favors - a true labor of love.

After Vicki Goldsmith reviewed of our work and accomplishments from the last year, Board President Lynette Helms spoke about what is coming up in 2013 and 2014. With 80 homes completed or currently under construction, our 100th house may be sooner than you think. Stay tuned for a report on the 2013 build season in an upcoming Director's Note e-newsletter.

And of course, we know you are wondering about everyone's favorite part of the Annual Meeting: the awards. We are so grateful for this opportunity to thank all of those without whom we could not complete our mission.

Volunteer Spotlight
t
Dick Roberts was the recipient of this year's Everett Stoyle Spirit of Service Award, which is given each year to a volunteer who exemplifies the generosity of spirit and willingness to serve that we associate with Habitat. Reprinted below are Fred Thimme's remarks, as he presented this award to his friend and building partner, Dick Roberts.

This year's recipient of the Ev Stoyle "Spirit of Service" award has volunteered for 14 yrs and his willingness to serve others is obvious to everyone.

Over the years, he's been Chair of the mid-Cape Chapter, served on the Board of Directors, been part of the Governance Committee, and served on the Family Selection Committee. Along with Fred Yarger, he helped organize the Helping Hammers Repair Group active in building handicap ramps and needed repairs for the less fortunate. He's served on the Affiliate Repair Committee and in the past was Project Manager for the Yarmouth Ecumenical build. He's helped lead numerous disaster relief trips to areas battered by hurricanes and tornadoes... especially the South but also last year to Springfield MA when they were hit by a tornado.

Currently, he's been a long servicing member of the Construction Committee helping to design many of our 80 homes. He's on the 2012 Strategic Planning Committee and served on the same committee in 2007.

By now, you may know that the recipient is Dick Roberts. Those that know Dick, know he's has always active, willing, and unselfish, but also shows up with his tool bag as a volunteer or Crew Leader at many of our Cape houses offering his considerable skills. In his spare time, he also helped us plan and retrofit our new Habitat ReStore.

As a fellow planner, trip organizer, hammer swinger, and friend, I would ask that we all stand to acknowledge one of our most deserving recipients ever.....Mr. Dick Roberts.

We congratulate Dick and offer a heartfelt THANK YOU for his years of service and dedication. For more information about volunteer opportunities with Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod, contact Dawn Walnut.  dawn@habitatcapecod.org or 508-362-3559 ex. 16.
