Truro Ceremony Rescheduled
We are now building in Truro, and raised the three walls in this picture on October 2nd. But our Wall Raising Ceremony, originally scheduled for September 29th, was sadly rained out. We will continue building, and hold the ceremony on October 20th. Join us at noon for a home blessing ceremony and celebration, with light refreshments to follow.
News In Brief
Thanks to our Women Build Team, who worked on framing both exterior and interior walls on October 4th in Truro. The day also included a lesson on using a circular saw, and Bob Ryley says he enjoyed working with this team as much as they say they enjoyed working with him.
The team from Convention Data Services showed they know how to sidewall shingle a house! We want to thank them for their hard work in Mashpee on October 2nd.

Donna Baldwin Named ReStore Manager
 | Donna Baldwin at the Carter Work Project in Haiti |
We are pleased to announce that Donna
Baldwin will be the new manager of the Habitat ReStore, after working as interim manager for three months. Vicki Goldsmith says, "Donna brings to this position many years of professional experience in sales, retail management, customer service and training, primarily in the banking industry. She has also lived a strong commitment to serving the community as a volunteer leader with Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod, South Shore Habitat and other community organizations."
The Habitat ReStore has been open since December 2011. Sales are rising each month, and the ReStore has already been able to contribute funds toward building affordable homes here on Cape Cod. Donna says,"If you visit the ReStore you will find an upbeat volunteer staff that enjoys working with our customers. The ReStore is a fun place to be...with an ever-changing inventory of furniture, appliances, cabinets, windows and doors and many other items for sale at great prices.
Our success depends on the generosity of individuals and businesses who donate items to us, having happy customers and the willingness of volunteers to help staff the store. We invite you to volunteer .... and help us to assist our customers, display our new merchandise and keep our store running smoothly."
The ReStore is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday, from 9 to 5. Volunteers willing to help in the store are invited to contact the ReStore at (508) 394-6400. Become part of our Habitat family... be a customer, a donor or a volunteer!.

Calling All Quilters!
At our more recent home dedications, we have been able to present new homeowners with a beautiful, hand-made quilt, thanks to our quilting volunteers. It is time to start thinking about preparing quilts for the five homes currently under construction. If you are a quilter, or know a quilter, and would like to help with this finishing touch that helps make a house a home, please contact Dawn Walnut at dawn@habitatcapecod.org or 508-362-3559 ex. 16.

Perry White at work at Russell Road in Mashpee
|
Volunteer Spotlight
Perry White has been around Habitat for a long time - and if you mention this fact to him, he's likely to say, "that's a polite way of saying I'm old." If Perry is old, he's certainly not slowing down.
Perry likes to keep busy, and he says he doesn't understand people who don't do things with their lives. For him, keeping busy is all about staying physically and mentally fit, and he especially enjoys knowing his work is doing good in the world. He likes to meet the people who will be living in the homes he's built - especially the children. And Perry admires the partner families for getting through some tough times: "Some of them come from some mean environments, and not by choice, but because they don't have a choice. They would pour their hearts out to tell you what it is to have a secure and safe place to raise their children."
But when Perry talks about his work with Habitat, what you hear most is how much he loves the people he has worked with. He tends to share more stories about other people than stories about himself. From his very first Habitat encounter - when he answered a newspaper ad by calling Dot Hannon - he has made friends during every build. Dot and Perry will each tell you they consider themselves the best of friends today. Perry cites "the friendships I have built with people since the very beginning" as the main reason he comes back. "We all have something in common but we're very different people, too. You get a cross of experience and backgrounds, and different geographic parts of the country when you work with Habitat. And all of them are doing something good with their time" Because of these wonderful people, Perry truly enjoys his volunteer work and says, "I'll probably die doing it."
For more information about volunteer opportunities with Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod, contact Dawn Walnut - you're bound to make some new friends while you're doing something good with your time. dawn@habitatcapecod.org or 508-362-3559 ex. 16.
