Public meetings important to our 2013 home building projects:

It is always important to have local supporters in the room when we appear before Town Zoning Boards of Appeals with our comprehensive permit applications. We would especially welcome the presence of Orleans and Yarmouth residents at these respective meetings.

Town Hall, Orleans:

Wed. October 3

meeting begins* at 6:30 p.m.

Town Hall, Yarmouth:

Thurs. Oct 25

meeting begins* 7:00 p.m.

*agenda order always subject to change

In Orleans we will be presenting plans for a five home neighborhood at 31 Namskaket Rd - a mix for three 3-bedroom homes and two 2-bedroom homes. The project was conceived in partnership with the Orleans Affordable Housing Committee; the land was purchased with Town Community Preservation Funds. In Yarmouth, the plans under review are two 2-bedroom homes on Laban Lane, off of North Main St.

VolunteerOpportunties  Make a Difference - Volunteer!
Currently, we have five homes in active construction: Bourne, Eastham (2 homes), Mashpee, and Truro (just getting underway). Staffing our sites with construction volunteers, registration volunteers, and food volunteers is essential to accomplishing our mission. In addition, our ReStore needs cashiers, people to work the sales floor, and folks to receive, prep, and display our ever-changing merchandise, including heavy building supplies and furniture. All of these jobs provide you with an opportunity to meet new friends, gain skills, and make a difference in the lives of families here on Cape Cod.

For more information about volunteering, contact Dawn Walnut, Volunteer Services Manager at 508-362-3559 e  x. 16, or dawn@habitatcapecod.org. More information is also available on our website

WallRaisingWall Raising in Truro
Please join us for a Wall Raising in Truro this Saturday, where we are building a home for Melissa Wheeler and her two young children. And when we say join us, we really mean it! Arrive before noon to fill out a waiver, and you can join the crew that lifts the walls into place. Many volunteers feel the wall raising is the most satisfying moment of  a build - and you can be a part of it. We look forward to seeing you there.

Barb and Rob Leiden
Volunteer Spotlight
Rob and Barb Leiden have been Habitat volunteers since 2003 when they retired and moved to Cape Cod. They were looking for something to do with their time, and started working on builds shortly thereafter. Barb said they chose Habitat because it was a worthwhile cause, a place to meet wonderful people, and they felt good doing something for the community.

Barb and Rob have almost always worked as a team on Habitat builds and they have done it all: cedar shingling, drywall, landscaping, selling tickets for the kayak. But they seem to have really found their calling at the ReStore. You will find them there every Thursday, unloading furniture, cleaning merchandise, pricing items, and arranging things on the sales floor. Rob says he loves working with the crew at the ReStore: "Those guys have an amazing depth of experience. It's just a great opportunity to work with fun people." He adds that he enjoys the work because there is an immediate gratification in seeing happy customers - different from the deferred satisfaction of working at a job site, when the house takes many months to come together. "Sometimes we sell things before they even get off the truck."

Barb also feels happy to be working where she gets to talk to satisfied customers and she delights in seeing their faces light up at the amazing deals available at the ReStore. "I love to see people's expressions when they see something they would have spent a lot more money on somewhere else." And the best part of all, according to Barb, is that "it's a great feeling that our work here will eventually help provide a house for someone."

For more information about volunteer opportunities with Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod, contact Dawn Walnut - we have plenty of ReStore positions available, working with a truly fun group of people like the Leidens.  dawn@habitatcapecod.org or 508-362-3559 ex. 16.
